CD universe told most people to go fly a kite and it wasn't their fault that their
cards were stolen and thousands of dollars were charged. CD universe still runs an
insecure system and insecure software which is still prone to such attacks.  Again
if you want to waste your time and money listen to people like arni.

If you're like me an you value your time and your money. Don't. If you need any
confirmation of this goto www.dvdtalk.com and search the forums for cd universe.
You'll see consistent widespread hatred...

Here's my idea on the issue:
There are plugins for Winamp that play .asf files.. Now couldn't we
simply use the diskwriter output to stream a decoded .wav file (for
burning) directly to disk? 8) I've done this with (non-streaming) RA-
files before (using the new winamp-RA plugin!)..
Another option would be Xfileget, this one saves realaudio files, i
suggest it saves .asf files, too, as .asf is assumably also based on
regular UDP!

Well said. I think thats the only thing the majors are
good for really, is making someone famous. So if that is
your aim as a musician, then by all means go for it.

I still think record labels (talking about the small
independant ones now) are important, as a 'quality-filter'.
I think pretty much everyone would be more inclined to
buy a random release on a label with a good reputation
than buy some random mp3.com artist's CD.

The only thing mp3.com is useful for now is a place to
store your music - I don't think anyone expects to
get any promotion just by uploading stuff there. Its
just too big and filled with crap, frankly.

hi everyone...

this is going to sound really stupid but i'm coming to the end of my rope
over this...

i recently attended a performance art type thing and there was a girl that
did a belly dance routine to this really cool song that i'm now trying to
find...  it was dancey and had an egyptian motif to it...  i seeem to
remember a line, something about the pharoah giving to the people house
music...  i was a bit out of it that evening but if anyone can help at all,
i would greatly appreciate it.

Having a few songs on mp3.com and similar sites, I feel compelled to
reply.

I agree that you can't get any promotion just by uploading stuff on
MP3.com. However, you do get a chance to make yourself heard to people
who might not have otherwise found out about you. In that sense, MP3.com
is quite useful.

Filled with crap? Yeah, you might think so, especially if you listen to
the MP3.com charts--all tracks sound too similar. But very few people
that visit MP3.com actually care to look beyond the often-inflated
charts and find small gems that MP3.com (and similar sites, e.g.
besonic.com) has here and there. So what if a person isn't in a chart?
You may very well like his/her songs.

Instead, what people do is they pick a genre, go to the charts, listen
to a few tracks off the "top 100" and then conclude that it's all
same-sounding crap.

I'm thankful for sites like MP3.com--it lets people make themselves
heard to an international audience without having to sign up with a
label, whether major or independent.

Still think MP.com is all crap? Try this: every day listen to one song
from one MP3.com artist you haven't heard yet. Don't look at the charts,
just find a random artist every time. I bet you'll be surprised with a
good track every so often.

As far as promotion on MP3.com... Really, would any serious group or
band promote themselves solely through that site? I think that if
somebody is trying to get serious, they would spend their resources on
better things--such as releasing a full-quality CD (not like DAM CDs) on
CDNOW/etc, get signed up with a label (again, whether big or small). But
I don't think that they would pick MP3.com as their number one promotion
tool.

I've thought along those same lines, and it really works well in the movie
industry (for the most part), but when you have bands like Lit and The Offspring
on one end, and bands like Orzic Tentacles and Curve on the other end, it makes
you wonder: "Why the fuck is Lit popular and why the fuck isn't Orzic Tentacles
popular?"

In defense of Aronne, I don't think he meant that 100% of MP3.com was crap.
It's just that it's finding a needle in a haystack, which is probably true.  I
go by a rule that works rather well: 99% of everything is crap.

A few years ago, I was really into computer MOD/S3M/XM/IT music.  At work, I had
a good connection, and I downloaded the entire year's worth of the Hornet
Archive.  Since anybody and his brother could upload any damn song he wanted, a
great majority of the songs sucked ass.  Yes, there were good songs among them,
and yes, they kicked ass, but you really have to search for them.

So, it's not that your music sucks, but how to seperate your music (if it is
indeed good) from the mountain of shit in the MP3.com collection.

(And if I had the DSL come in, I could actually download stuff from MP3.com, but
this Earthlink connection sucks my late granddaddy's nutz!)
