Laser" <x91laser@net-link.net> Subject: (orbital) RE: Acen I've been into Acen since I found the three cd singles for "Trip II The Moon" at Tower Records in Ann Arbor many years ago. On a whim I happened to pick them up because 1) there were remixes (remember most singles back then didn't have remixes and those that did were either dance music, rap, or techno) and 2) one of them said "may u live 2 see the dawn" (and me being a huge Prince fan couldn't pass that up). I've got the three singles and the 75 minutes album (which I ran across while I was visiting Montreal). But, Dyce and Nino also worked heavily on a project under the name Baby D back around '96. The album was called "Deliverance". There are some really great tracks on there, "So Pure", "Casanova", "Let Me Be Your Fantasy". The album was released with a bonus disc with an Acen mix and a Prodigy mix (the only reason I bought it, since I didn't know until I read the liner notes that Baby D was pretty much Acen as well). The "So Pure" single also had an Acen mix. If anyone is interested I can get you more information about the cds. I really latched onto their use of hip-hop samples and the use of Prince (and Jill Jones) samples on the Trip II The Moon singles as well as the killer bass and breaks. Too bad they pretty much vanished (or have they?). The 96:VR album are tracks from the Concept series reworked by Thomas Brinkmann (probably why I didn't think of it earlier, I think of the CD as music by Brinkmann rather than by Hawtin) He reworks the tracks on a turntable with two tonearms - each tonearm thus picks up the track at a different time, and remixes them together with different panning... the result is a mesmerizing swirl in time and space :) He did a live show in Cleveland a month or two ago, with this turntable. I didn't get to see it, but others who did said it was pretty amazing how differently the tracks sounded just by picking up the tonearms and dropping them at different points on the record. There is also a "variations" CD by brinkmann where he did the same remixing of Mike Ink's Studio 1 series... getting that in the mail next week, probably.. Brinkmann does losta other interesting things with records; some of his 12"es he actually carves sounds into them with a razorblade. He writes the track for a specific BPM so that he can put "beats" into the track by making radial cuts into the record. A bit of a ramble I suppose, but brinkmann happens to be one of my favorite artists at the moment :) And for the Plastikman content, well I have never heard the "unvaried" version (the Concept 96:CD), so I don't know what it sounds like. I would think it would bore the shit out of me after hearing Brinkmann's variations.... As for the Orbital content.... oops there was none :) sorry. MUSIK, the second album, was built around = more : : subtle ideas, funkier slower beats effectively creating a slightly = : : chilled out experiment. = : : = : : the third and last installment of the trilogy was to be called = KLINIK. : : this was the swinging back to the ideas of SHEET ONE, but further. = the : : music for this album was to be stripped down to the bare essentials, = : : leaving only the remnants of basslines, beats, and delays to feed = off, : : this was to be the end of the trilogy. = : : = : : somewhere around 1995 things got turned upside down when I was thrown = : : out of the u.s.a. for performing illegally. this changed everything. = as : : the plastikman project was very in-tuned with my own experiences in = the : : detroit area, getting back to recording KLINIK became inspirationally = : : very difficult. by the time I was re-admitted to the u.s., the = detroit : : scene had changed and also my own musical direction. when I finally = got : : back to working full time on the third plastikman release, things = : : started to turn out quite differently than I had expected. I quickly = : : finished enough material for an album that in my mind, is album four, = : : CONSUMED. this utilised the ideas beind the finished KLINIK material = and : : took them to a new area. instead of 'trying' to finish KLINIK, I = moved : : on and released CONSUMED. = : : = : : even though KLINIK was never finished, there was an abundance of = : : material that was recorded for it. in order to close the trilogy, and = to : : establish some of the 'bridge' between MUSIK and CONSUMED, I thought = it : : was necessary to release the third album, although the album you are = now : : holding has taken a somewhat different shape, I believe ARTIFAKTS = (BC) : : effectively concludes this trilogy. = : : = : : some of the material included here was intended for KLINIK, some of = it : : just things that were recorded during the interim between MUSIK and = : : CONSUMED. together the sessions represent the best outline of what = : : happened in between MUSIK and CONSUMED." = : : - Richie Hawtin 1998 = : : = : : 1.
