-
- The nearest thing in terms of sound and production is 'The Mix',
- which is virtually a 'Greatest Hits Reworked' package.
-
- If you want the classics, there's are 4 LPs which every fan of
- electronic music should have;
-
- Autobahn : More primitive sounding than later efforts, but an utterly
- hypnotic and atmospheric piece of electronica. Ground-breaking to the
- Nth degree.
-
- Trans-Europe Express : The crystallisation of the poppier, less
- overtly experimental sound of the late 70s. This is the *all-time
- classic* electronic LP. It's happy, weird and stark in different
- places, and predates the birth of modern electronic dance music by
- almost 10 years!
-
- The Man Machine : Kraftwerk developed the idea of robotic sounds, and
- the LP is more mechanical in parts, but any album that has the pop
- classic 'The Model' and the unspeakably lush beauty of 'Neon Lights'
- is going to be a classic, isn't it?
-
- Computerworld : This is the point where the Kraftwerk sound became
- less futuristic and more contemporary - but only because people were
- starting to catch up with them! Brilliant melodies and sounds - most
- of which have been sampled to death by less worthy bands and artists.
- Electronic pop heaven.
-
- These are the LPs I'd recommend to a new fan, but 'The Mix' is
- probably the best introduction to someone who hasn't really heard
- them before. 'Ralf Anf Florian', 'Radio-Activity' and the earlier
- stuff are more experimental, but contain some excellent stuff.
- 'Electric Cafe' contained a lot of good material but didn't do
- anything new. If you can get hold of either the William Orbit remix
- of the 'Mix'-era 'Radioactivity' single and the 12" of 'Tour De
- France' (which never appeared on any LP) these are also fine pieces
- of the Kraftwerk legacy to own...
-
- Just my humble twopenn'orth...

-
- Though that this is a perfectly valid thought, but I personally feel that
- artists like Aphex Twin (with reference to his ambient stuff like SAWvII)
- is more suited maybe to this label. Conclusion drawn more on the premise
- that it contains to repetitive beats. Classical tends not to contain the
- repetitive beats, our if they do they tend to be not really that high time

-
- There's definitely truth to that. I guess I was thinking more along
- the lines of the way they use individual parts within songs. For
- instance, the structure of a song like 'Out There Somewhere', the way
- it builds, adding some parts and removing others, only to more or
- less come back full circle by the end. I don't really think the tempo
- itself is all that big a factor. Their stuff is for the most part
- based on a relatively simple pattern, but they explore that pattern
- to its fullest, which I think shares a lot with some styles of
- 'classical' music, that is, to take a basic idea or 'theme' and
- explore it as fully as possible within a single piece (song).

- I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Kraftwerk album 'Computer
- World'. Personally, I think it is their third best album (right behind
- 'Radio Activity' and 'Trans-Europe Express'), but in my mind it's the
- one that most sounds like Orbital's music. You really can't beat Pocket
- Calculator (my fav 'pop' song at the moment).
-
- Computer World is the best early to mid 80's album (1981) I own. I'm
- sure CDNow.com or UBL.com has sound clips from all or most of
- Kraftwerk's material so you can decide for yourself.
