> I think that their cover/case idea is brilliant and so original.
Are you sure? I find that "interesting" is the strongest word I'd use...
I find it is in the same vein as the "2 or 3 patches of flat-colored
squares" type of painting...
Minimalistic. Not brilliant. Original? Well, every CD I have has a
silver-shiny-rainbow side, the only originality of Ae is that they have two!
If you're looking for brilliant, get a second, long look at Orbital's In
Sides. Original? Rush's Counterparts was my favorite before In Sides... And
figuring out the print on Underworld's Dubnobasswithmyheadman or which
bodyparts are used for Aphex Twin's RDJ album can be entertaining on a rainy
day...
Hey the subject of the message was shopping, well I finally found Polygon
Window's Surfing on sine waves in Montreal this weekend! woohoo! And I
didn't even have to go to their huge HMV (which I regret not having done -
I'll have to return). I also bought mu-ziq's lunatic harness, which is not
quite so much a rarity, and it's the only one I've had time to listen to
until now, and I'm not terribly excited yet, but I think I'll end up liking
it.
blah blah blah!

4. Puff Daddy, Jimmy Page and Orbital do "Stairway in Heaven" for the

5. 7 minutes of Belching and vomiting (looped and unlooped, looped again

6. Second CD: 75 minute long collaboration with Goldie and Alex

The LP is a typical mid-period Eye-Q trance output - all stuff up
around 140bpm, lots of rolling sequencer patterns and lush strings.
It's one of the best of Eye-Qs output in my opinion, but if I have a
critiscism I'd say it was a little bit samey. However, if you care
about trance it's something you should have in your collection...
> > ps i can't believe nobody bothered to answer my question on

'Dub' was originally a mutation of roots reggae in the mid-70s. The
invention of the sound was credited to Jamaican producer King Tubby
(Osborne Ruddock) who took reggae standards and totally remixed them,
preserving bass and drums and dropping bits of the vocals, keyboards
and rhythm guitars into the mix, treating them with massive reverb
and echo chamber effects to create a mesmerising and 'druggy'
psychedelic sound. A trademark of the sound was also the 'space'
between beats - sounds were given space to breathe and not crammed
together in layers of overproduced slabs of noise. This, in
particular, is a style which, once heard will immediately define the
dub sound.
A lot of reggae LPs were remixed this way and one could
often buy a 'dubplate' version of an artist's LP. Dub producers to
follow in Tubby's wake were Scientist, Prince Jammy and Lee 'Scratch'
Perry. The sound influenced a lot of late 70s/early 80s punk/new
wave, but the death of King Tubby in a shooting in 1983 (I think) was
a serious setback to the movement. The chief exponent of the Dub
sound in the UK was/is Adrian Sherwood. More or less everything on
his On-U Sound label bears some debt to the King Tubby Dub sound.
Also try Mad Professor's 'No Protection' remix LP of Massive Attack's
'Protection'.
The 'Dub Version' one finds on forms of music other than reggae has
long since forgotten the roots and principles of the original
reggae dub sound - most Dub Mixes are simply instrumentals with the
instruments being dropped into the mix when the remixer/producer
feels like it, but usually minus the trademark
reverb/echo/distortion. There are notable exceptions to this
generalisation - try The Orb's first LP, KLF's 'Chill Out', Jah
Wobble's reggae experiments, Primal Scream's 'Screamadelica' and the
remix of their latest LP 'Echo Dek'. Underworld and, to some extent,
Orbital use Dub concepts to give theire music a spacey, atmospheric
feel. My feeling is that most 'Dub' versions of house/techno tunes
are just cheap and unoriginal remixes with little or no resemblance
to the original sound of dub.
Hope this helps!
Andy Jackson

Have you seen the video for rez? It's absolutely brilliant! Alot of their other videos are great

And I know what you feel about live gigs with underworld, they are one of the best live bands

Thats Phils point of view and im sure he was referring to live bootlegs
not official recordings.
Just like to point out that the term "bootleg" is most commonly used for
live recordings...rather than official recordings that are ripped off
and you will find that Live Bootlegs are treated as an ok thing by Paul
(i know for sure...dont know Phils view).
They dont want to be ripped off - so any official recordings burned to
cd or mp3d is seen as a bad thing in their eyes. A conversation (with
Paul) only last week produced this comment (not quoted exactly).
"Recording things to tape for someone is seen as an ok thing to do,
everyone does it. But putting stuff on CD just dont seem right...not too
sure why...but it aint".
At the end of the day...its their income that we would be ripping off
...

Why not? I use cd's like tapes. Better quality and the sound never
degrades since cd's take so long to wear out. Yes you can wear out a
burnable cd, but it takes lots and lots of reads to do so. Anyway, in
todays world its normal. Phillips just came out with a cd burner for
audio only. With that you can make mix cd's like you used to do with
tapes. I did that myself. I took every track I love from all the orbital
albums and burnt it to one cd' opening up 5 slots in my car changer. I
think redistribution of copyrighted material is just wrong. But everyone
I know has copied a released tape or taped a cd for someone else. It's
how society works. But I have seen all of this work as free publicity for
groups as I give my friend a copy of sniv and he buys every cd orbital has
ever releaased that he could get his hands on.
I wont touch boots, but in the end I think everyone likes boots, since
live shows are soo hard to come by.
