okay, here's an interesting request: who out there wants to compile a list
of all the orbital songs which use a 303? here, i'll start: remind. i'm no
trainspotter, but i'm gonna guess that about half the songs on green use
one as well. have the brothers used one at all since the brown album? i'd
love it if they brought back some 303 squelchiness for the new one.

also, i just wanted to point out that use of 303s is in no way limited to
goa trance. you can find it in lots of techno and breakbeat. dj icey, for
instance (his album is growing on me), loves the 303. BT gets a lot of use
out of his on "ima." and we can't forget "everybody needs a 303" by the
guy everyone loves to hate, fatboy slim.

in any case, you've no doubt heard it before - i think i heard one in a
shampoo commercial last night.

also, what's you guys' vote for "best use of a 303 by a techno artist"
(like this was the grammys or something)? i'd like to know of more good
examples of 303-based dance music.

For me this is easy - Josh Wink!  'Higher state of Consciousness'
and 'Are you there' have the loudest, most obnoxious, beautiful
acid lines I've ever heard! I have yet to hear anyone else make such
crazy, complicated solos with a 303. Although I'd like to hear more. :)

Ok, since we're on to a subject I've been wondering about before and you
people seem to know a great deal about it, would you tell some about 606
and 808 (if there's something called that) too, and clearly distinguish
between the three forms/types.

Or just clarify the terms for me.

I heard Rockafeller Skank two weeks ago, I remember having seen the video
before (I forget why there was no sound the first time) but this was the first
time I really watched/listened.  I love that frigging song.  It's by no means
'good' but it's good in a bad way, kinda.  It's cheap and easy, but it's really
fun.  Great to dance to and it's been in my head for quite a while now.  I got
the full MP3 asap.  Made me wish I had have gotten an album of his I saw on a
site once (better living thru chemistry, that him?).

It'd have to be Richie Hawtin's remix of System 7's Alpha Wave. 19 and a
half minutes of heaven. And the Chems putting it through a fuzzbox or
whatever on Chemical Beats. And the original acid house track, Phuture's
Acid Tracks.

Well, I heard a little rumour that Josh didn't use a TB-303 for "Higher
State...". Apparently he actually used a Juno (106?). But I may be
completely wrong.

The 606 and 808 (and 909) are all Roland made Drum machines. If you see
anyone ever refering to roland X0X machines they basically mean these
and the 303's. There is loads of information on the web about these
machines, so have a look and prove me wrong. :-)

            Well, there's always 'Higher State of Consciousness' by Josh
Wink. That's probably the song that really did it.. It's excruciatingly
painful to sit and listen to, but it sure does make the dancefloor go
nuts..

            There's lots more than that - SH-101, MC-202, TB-303,
TR-505, TB-606, TR-707, TR-727, TR-808, TR-909.

Let's see what I can remember..

SH-101 : If I remember correctly, the SH-101 is sort of a combination of
a 303 and an 808, soundwise.
MC-202 : I'm not sure about this one
TB-303 : We've covered this one.
TR-505 : Also not sure about this one
TR-606 : A Beatbox, more or less. Looks a lot like a 303, run on
batteries, not midi-equipped. more or less a toy.
TR-707 : A more equipped drum machine, better than a 606, but not as
good as an 808 or a 909..
TR-727 : I dunno..
TR-808 : My favorite of the bunch. Think about the intro to Out There
Somewhere, the bass sound that sounds like a puff of air. This is one of
the more widely used ones, orbital uses it heavily. Used for a lot of
electro back in the day. It's _the_ hand clap and cowbell.. :)
TR-909 : This is by far the most realistic sounding of all of them.
Really deep bass drum. Used a lot by jungle producers who sequence their
own breaks.

Anyone - I'm sure there are some mistakes here, feel free to correct.
This is off the top of my head.

Let's not forget that Richie Hawtin is quite fond of the 909. He always spins with one, and is announced as like richie hawtin: dj, 909 and effects.
which reminds me.. about people still interested in finding out info about that autechre/richie hawtin show here in toronto on saturday. the venue will not be announced until the day of. that's the way it works here still. raves etc have moved out of warehouses and into clubs, but the locations are still not announced until the day of. all the info line says (i just called it) is 'licensed downtown concert venue that is not industry'... my guess is that they'll have it at the warehouse or the guvernment.. maybe the concert hall but that would be strange.

oh lord, there was this crazy old rave tune by someone whose name i can't
remember called "insomniac", it had the most blatant use of a 303 i've ever
heard.....it was great.  another wonderful part about that tune was there was
a sample of a guy saying "insomniac...don't come back" or something to that
effect, and when you played it backwards, it said the same thing....

Also, was at a huge rave/festival called Apex Project over the weekend.  I

by showing her my t-shirt, but the boring  chick just smiled and then her

Hola and good tidings to all,

    I purchased a Loreena McKennit CD a few weeks ago after hearing her song
"memmers dance."  I was pretty disappointed that I had to go out and buy
the CD single for that song to get the version that I had heard on the
radio.  Never the less I listened to her entire CD and found that I love
it!  Her combination of Drub, Bass, violin, etc..  all the elements of the
songs are just so awesome!  I find when I'm not listening to one of my
Orbital CDs...I'm listening to her.

    I would almost have to say that she is on the same level as Orbital...but
in a different music category.  She has a very Celtic sound to her....it's
so awesome.....every time I hear her I get all goose bumply.....just like I
do when I hear Orbital's Lush....(oh the first 30 seconds of Lush 3-1 are
so awesome!)

    Does anyone else even know who she is?  And does she give you that same
feeling?

She is from Stratford, Ontario, about two hours or so from me. you had to buy the cd single to get the version of the song that you hear on the radio, because the version on the radio is a remix.

    She's released quite a few albums.. The only thing I've heard of hers besides the
Mummer's Dance was a CD a friend of mine played me about 4 years ago. It was very
traditional Celtic, and the impression I got was that all of her previous albums were
more or less the same, and that the new one was sort of a change..

I believe "Sad But True" was used in a scene towards the beginning of the
movie.  In the bar/nightclub where Ralphie is first seen, SBT is playing while
someone sings over it in falsetto.  ack.... I can't believe I know so much
about that good story turned terrible movie.  o' well...  hope that helped.

This is non-orbital, but lately so is everthing else. I have heard this song
so many times, but never knew who sings it. IT may be called "I can't get no
sleep" but what ever it is called, he says I can't get no sleep enough times
in the song. I asked a DJ I know and he wasn't sure but he said BBE? Does

Unfortunately they rather lessened the impact by copying it hundreds of
times. But they never really matched it, except maybe the dub of Blue
Monday. Then they went on about their new direction with the slower stuff,
and now they all sound like that!

um, I think you mean Vic Acid (it is a scene from a grocery store
check out line). I wouldn't say thats the worse one, though I don't
have the albums (yet). I only have the 3 singles, and I think they are
all pretty good. Not sure which I would say is the worst/best.
But I did think Vic Acid is a pretty awesome song, so maybe you
wouldn't be into his other stuff... I've been told that "Feed me
Weird things" is his best work. Thats the first album on Rephlex;
the rest are all Warp releases.
(BTW, Squarepusher is just one guy, Tom Jenkinson)

i got sacrebleu yesterday and like it a lot.
for those of you who also like it, and there do seem to be a good number
of you, i would recommend "trip tease" by tipsy, which came out in 1996
on the asphodel label.  the track on that cd called "la bomba atomica" has
one of the greatest loungy melodies ever, and it's all around clever and
has great instrumentation - lots of synthesizers and tripped out effects,
but organic and acoustic sounds as well.

    The song is Sad But True. I'm not sure exactly when it plays, but I have a
vision of them running through the junkyard as it's playing.

Hey Mehul! Long time, no post :)

Anyway, to confirm all these "unconfirmed beliefs" I want to nail it to
the ground that Sad But True was the song in Johnny Mneumonic and that
it was played early, in the bar where you first see the female star
actor (nice, but no good ;) ) where she confronts that dealer? who has
two side-kicks (two other women) and she is laughed of as being
instabile, etc. The music in the background, and rightly suggest more
than once by posters, is Sad But True and a woman sings something else
above that track.

The track I believe is available on the Johnny Mneumonic soundtrack, I'm
not sure it's that much different from the Snivil version. Can't
remember that, so it's up to someone else to confirm. :)

Anyway, you people made me realise how utterly shite that movie is and
now I'll probably see it for the THIRD time again this weekend.. haha..
talk about waste of time ;)

"Inssomniak (I Come Back)" by D.J.P.C.

According to www.gemm.com there's an lp of it(I have the concrete mix on
"Technorave 3: Technomania" by Next Plateau Records).  He also released a
12" of "James, Je Ne Trouve Pas Let Mot(Can You Feel The Beat Mr. James)".
It's also on Technorave 4 from Next Plateau/FFRR(as the NYC Remix).  If
anyone want's..I'd be glad to make a small mp3 snippit of Inssomniak..I
will need a server though to place it on though :).
