- Hey,
-
- Was at Virgin today, and was checking out LP5. Quite an amazing cd. I
- wanted to buy it, but they wanted $26.99 cdn. Although the cd is worth it,
- I think I can get it for less off of the internet. Odd packaging. I
- couldn't figure out what cd it was until I listened to it. I was looking
- for a copyright, but the sticker that had all of the cd info was covered up
- by the fucking price tag. They have so much space, and they cover up what
- you need to see everytime. Instead I bought the Basscadet EP which I've
- wanted for a while, and Air's Moon Safari. Not bad although Kelly, watch
- the stars is the highlight, and really the only trak that stands out besides
- Sexy Boy. What do you all think.

-
- The 3CD set was the limited edition version, and I thought they'd all gone
- immediately, so I didn't mind only getting the 2CD version. The 2 CDs are
- full-length, but I think the third only has five or so tracks on it,
- including a remix of Plastikman's wonderful 'Spastik' that I would love to

-
- Well worth paying a 'normal' price for, and I'd say definitely get it if
- it's cheap.=20
-
- The style of the music is quite varied (though all techno, loosely
- speaking), from really hard tuff like Basic Channel to really smooth jazzy
- stuff like Carl Craig's 'At Les'. And Aphex's 'Polynomial G' is on there.
- And mu-ziq's 'Phi*1700[u/v]', and Biosphere, and CJ Bolland, and loads more

- All,
-
- Just got back after an hectic 3 day trip to London - down there on Work
- business ... a Novell course (yawn) but by the night i was enjoying
- myself.
-
- During the visit i made a brief visit to the studio just to drop a few
- things off for Paul. Micky Mann (Pressure of Speech) was there helping
- out on a mix of the last but ONE track from the new album - top friendly
- bloke. Paul made a few comments about Diggers shirts btw (are u ready
- for this Digger!) - loved the idea - thought it would be hilarious if
- his Dad would wear a T-Shirt with "new age travellers..." on it. :)
-
- Thursday night i went to the Isslington small farty Richard H Kirk
- (Cabaret Voiltaire) gig at the Garage with Paul H, his GF and Jones.
- Small hot room full of journos and Record Company representives...
- Support Act was just a wall of noise - very annoying - but yaknow he
- just wanted to hear people shout "F?$? Off" to him. Richard H Kirk
- himself - played a mixture of styles - generally upbeat - nice mixture
- of breakbeats as well. The whole night was over quite quick - only to
- see Cylob (Afx type artist) grab the mike of the mixing desk and shout
- various abuse to the crowd. Before anyone could react Paul had disarmed
- him of the mike and lowered the volume. Hey...who says he can only
- compose music. Paul the bouncer!

- I dont think that is the problem with Underworld and i know for a fact

- Also...ive got a fair few "Past / Live" bootlegs that my good friend

-
- Walk Now (live NL 94)
- Crash and Carry (ditto)
- Naked and the Dead (Bham UK 93)
- Dwr Budr (Boston, US 96)
- Halcyon (Glasto UK 94)

- Chime (Alexandra Palace - Big Ben version (one off) - UK - New Years Eve
- 96/97)
- Impact (Pheonix Festival, UK 97)
-
- All the recordings are FM or Mixing desk quality - i wouldnt agree to

- won't be out in the US for a month or something.
-
- bought the dj icey album "generate" after hearing a really good track
- which turned out to be from a different album. (doh!) so far i'm not
- really all that impressed. kinda cheesy florida-sounding breakbeats with
- unoriginal samples. still, some of it is pretty good. "not a test,"
- "vector" and "this is how my drummer drums" are all okay. overall, it
- sounds a lot like the first "trip hop acid phunk" comp, which i like, but
- which gets old after awhile. not to mention that it was released like 4
- years ago.
-
- one more thing: i listened to a squarepusher CD which i thought was okay
- but not great. it had a guy pushing a shopping cart on the front. someone
- in the store said it was their worst release. which one should i buy?
-
- been listening to mu-ziq's "brace yourself" ep a lot. i think mike p. is

- he's getting better at it. and those melodies are like candy.

- Vol 2 isn't as good as Vol 1 but it's still kicks ass. If you look for
- label "Jungle Sky" on cdnow.com you can listen to some samples from JS 1.
- 1.8.7 has a new album coming out, I think, but "When worlds collide" IS

- The Bass Cadet ep is definitely cool, and I think Moon Safari is one of the
- best albums of the year so far. It took a few listens to really get into, but
- when you start realizing the care and thought put into every sound on the album,
- you start to realize how impressive it is.. I think the bubble sound at about a

- Yeah, the 187 is called 'Quality Rolls' and won't be out till next month
- sometime. And This is Jungle Sky might be a good compilation, but I personally
- would not rate it quite that high. I also left out one of my very favorites
- (musta been smokin' rock that day...). Renegade Continuum. It's 2 mixed CD's
- (or 4 unmixed records) and worth whatever you hafta pay for it. :) Both discs
- are mixed by DJ Dara, and other than the first 2 logical progression CD's, it's
- probably the best mixed jungle cd around. He uses all the tricks, slowdowns,
- wicked beat cuts, and the songs are top notch. One disc is dark and hard, one
- is a little (only a little) less dark and very jazzy.

-
- a 303 is a Roland TB-303. It's a little gray box smaller than a casio
- keyboard with a bunch of knobs on it and a very small keyboard. It makes
- wild, screaming, distorted, squelchy, tweaked out basslines, and that's
- about it. The clean sounds can more or less be found on any roland
- quasi-analog model. For this, it sells for a ridiculously high price.

-
- What?? You don't listen to much Goa trance do you?
-
- Yes, the TB-303 is a small keyboard with a bunch of knobs that was
- ORIGINALLY deigned to create basslines for regular rock bands. It proved
- to be pretty bad at doing this. However, some people discovered that if
- you pushed the 303 to it's limits it made wierd screeching noises.
- Unfortunately before they became popular in the techno scene Roland
- discontinued them.
-
- I guess there have been many attempts to duplicate it's sound over the
- years, with no success. Roland refuses to make them again though. They
- say that their MC-303 "groovebox" is an acceptable substitute, but it isn't
- even close. (I've heard it) All the Roland substitutes just use samples of
- the 303 to recreate the sound, and they don't have the versatility and
- range of the original.
-
- Now they sell for big money (around $1200 US I think?) because they are so
- rare and SO in demand. You can't really make great goa trance without one.
- The latest attempt at emulation is called Rebirth (a software program)
- that does a very good job of emulating the original 303. It's VERY close,
- probably a good enough substitute for those willing to use it. It's
- certainly a lot better than Roland's crappy MC-303 emulation.
-
- The original poster (mailer?) can search for "TB-303" on the web and
- they'll find tons of stuff (including samples I'm sure. Once you know what
- it sounds like you can _always_ recognize it when you hear it.

- Rebirth sounds great, as we've said a thousand times before. Has anyone
- tried out version 2 yet? It's due out about now, but a friend of mine
- said he had a cracked mac version already. The main difference is that
- you get a 909 as well as an 808 (I think). The sound is very close to
- the original but will never be reproduced completely as there were some
- random elements in the circuitry that made the original do some mad
- shit (apparently).
