was just me going off on one there... but I'm not sure I know what a normal
childhood is, not that I mean that in a derogatory way ! There was an
article in New Scientist I was reading at the time about the apparant
changes in the way we relate as we get older focused mostly on young
teenagers, and also theres mixed feelings about manufactured boy/girl bands
depending mostly on your age too. Just one of those facts of life I guess,
but it gets me thinking sometimes.

picked up towa tei - 'last century modern' a few days ago. i think it's
his most solid release so far. less hiphop/r&b than 'sound museum,' which
is definitely a good thing. it's got the same loungey techno feel of his
previous efforts, and all the funkadelic beats you've come to expect.
there's a bit more dnb than usual, a bit of idm-ish stuff thrown in for
fun, and an excellent track called "congratulations" with the sample
"congratulations... on the finest... turn... table in the world!" top
stuff - recommended.

try vintage vinyl and deep grooves, both are on like the 6300 block of
delmar in university city.
vintage has a pretty huge and varied selection

as far as for things to do ttheres a shitload depending on what your into
sports, the arch, union stations prretty cool, there are also some good
clubs, cheetah and velvet on washington street

i know we've all seen this one before, but i could use some help here...

i've been shopping around for dj equipment - turntables, 2-CD players,
mixers - and, as i'm new to this, i'm discovering that i know little about
what separates the good from the bad. technics 1200s are pricey (duh), and
don't have some of the features i'm looking for (pitch blend, reverse,
line out options?), so i'm looking into some gemini and numark direct
drives at about $300-375 (US) a pop. could anyone tell me their personal
experiences with non-technics turntables, or give me a url that has
reviews or comparisons? the only good one i've found was mostly european
brands that are unavailable (and/or expensive) in the states. i'm just
looking for something quality that isn't gonna cost me a nut.

does the concept of PLUR piss off anyone around here? it seems to piss off
people on the idm-list, which i find very upsetting. anyway.

speaking of the idm-l (and getting back on-topic!) somebody mentioned
_very_ briefly an audio project that orbital might be involved in called
"the fire this time." that's all i know about it, and a google search
brought no useful information. anyone heard of this?

In Future Music they did a review of three non-technics turntable set-ups, I
think it was Numark, Gemini and Soundlab where the Soundlab came away as the
best quality turntable at its price. Don't remember the issue number, but
I'll look it up for you if you want. I've got the DLP32S, and it has only
received good reviews everywhere I've looked (Future Music, XFADE, DJ Mag)
so that influenced my choice as a beginner who also thinks Technics was a
bit pricey.

Doing my part to liven things up...now to see if this takes 5 days to show up.

I was thrilled to find a local bar that plays Orbital this weekend. Maybe not such a
big deal to some, but around here, finding a place like this is like pulling teeth.
Went out with some friends, and one wanted to drop by her favorite watering hole - I'd
never been there before, and they were playing the Propellerheads when we came in. I
was floored; then my friend went on to inform me that they play all sorts of good
stuff there - big band and jazz up through blues and electronic and alternative rock.
She walked in the other night to "The Girl With The Sun in Her Head". Plus this place
has a funky atmosphere and isn't the typical packed meat market that most other campus
bars are. Yay for culture!

nicely tacked onto the end is an interview from irish radio that last near

I saw someone mention Meltdown 2000 with new tunes by Orbital - they will be
at the event in person this Saturday and Sunday. Despite the fact the
England need to wop Germanys ass in the European Football , i will be going
to Meltdown this Saturday in the hope that they have screens/tvs like they
did at John Peels Meltdown. Ok...i am rambling now.

Yeah, because they lost to my team Portugal.  YEAH!  Since there is really
nothing going on on the list right now.  I will give a short review of the
NIN concert I just got back from.  (hey, he is some what electronic since
it's mainly all made on keyboards and computers)  It was fuckin' amazing.
By far the best concert I've ever been too.  Yes, it was better than
Orbital.  Trent Reznor has amazing stage presence.  A Perfect Circle kicked
ass too, and speaking of ass, Maynard let us see his.  There was wicked
screens that looked like they were LCD or something, they weren't projected.
They played more old stuff than new stuff.  And it was all too perfect.  If
anyone wants to know more, mail me!

Yeah, I was quite pleased with his latest album.  I thought I was going to be
disappointed because it was a double-album (like I was with LTJ Bukem's latest;
only two damn songs that I really like), but it's probably his best one yet.

Got to stand up for Chicane.  He/she/they do some excellent prog house,

Chicane is a he, and Halcyon has nothing to do with Halcyon+on+on...not a
bad track though...if you get a chance, try to check it out.
I actually dont mind the album in its entirety.
I heard Hybrid's 'Wide Angle' which (for those who dont know) will be issued
as 'Wider Angle' and will have a lot of live stuff apparently.  They
supposedly put on a great show live.  Inform me if anyone's seen them.  I
downloaded Unfinished Symphony (the live version) and it sounds great.
I also heard the first track of BT's 'movement in still life' with the guy
talking about making hits or something and i was totally turned off by it.

Hey Orbital. Been a while since I posted. My apartment got broken into
and both my computers got stolen (along with 4 years of my life...) and
a bunch of other stuff. Plus I moved and Bel Atlantic took their damn
time to install a phone line for me so I couldn't connect anyway. Boston
sucks. (Rob - I just moved to Brookline though - Do you know Dexter Park
on St. Pauls Street? It is sooo awesome!)

Anyway, I'm around again. Oh, and I just wanted to say to Mehul that the
first 4 tracks off BT's Movements in Still Life aren't that good, but
then at the 5th trrack the mood totally changes. Actually, the last two
tracks are my favorite. Satelite and sometihng else. But, don't waste
your money on the 2CD set if you come across it. I don't like the 2nd
CD, especially since it is the same as the first pretty much. Anyway, BT
is awesome, but I think more Moby fans are turned on to him than Orbital
fans (Brendan...) Anyway, later.

Loopz was fortunate to receive ".Net website of the week" award. .Net are a
renowned UK internet magazine so this was very good news. We also got an
gold award from Elm Design - really appreciate acknowledgements like this.

On the point of Hybrid's 'Wider Angle', it has already been released. I have
a copy, and it's been playing whereever I am for the last 3 days.

It's a 2 cd set, incorporating the original Wide Angle release and a 2nd CD
with 6 live tracks, 2 non-live and the 12" of Kid 2000.

So, I've now doubled the number of bands I _want_ to see live - Orbital &
Hybrid.
*wonders if Hybrid could support Orbital? That'd be some night* :).

Oh, I dunno about that.  I have a few Hybrid and BT tracks on MP3 and they're
great.  BT's Blue Skies (with Tori Amos) is excellent, and I plan on buying
Hybrid's Wide Angle (when I have some money).

1) Don't buy belt-drive EVER !!!

2) Don't buy used (unless they're Technics from what I hear)

3) Proper tone arm setup and needle/cartridge pressure is KING !!!!

4) Avoid coffins for travel, unless you're really buff, or you have a moving
dolly nearby (you will break you back transporting your gear back and forth
to gigs and shit). Buy individual flight cases if you can afford them.

5) Don't ever attempt to scratch a 7" . ;-P

i just picked this up a couple days ago. at first i was like "ewww... bt's
gone pop!" and i still think that's true, but it's growing on me. he still
has an amazing way with production and attention to detail. so even though
there's only a few or 4 songs i really like, i still appreciate the sound.
the soul coughing guy annoys the fuck out of me though (sorry, i know
that's probably blasphemy to some). yeah, so i'd sum it up with:  great
production, mediocre music.

it seems that the more people i ask, the more tell me "get technics, no
matter what." at first i thought this was just bogus snobbery, but now i'm
not so sure. is there anyone out there who has tried technics and, say,
gemini pt-2000's, and thinks they are comparable? how about the numark
TT-1's?

one more dj equipment question: has anyone tried to mix on one of those
dual cd player things? are they worth getting? i played with one once,
don't know what kind, and had a hell of a time beat-matching, but maybe i
wasn't using it right. if anyone has suggestions for good brands/features,
i would be obliged.

finally, i saw mixmaster morris (one of the best idm-ish djs out there)

more than an hour without almost falling asleep. but i must say, he has an
amazing ability to flawlessly blend genres and different sounds. check him
out if you're into that sort of thing.

There is one part of her argument that I think is weak. She says that
artists can go on the internet and get "millions of fans" buying their music

you'd do well. Why? Because you've been promoted around the world by your
record label. Before that, you were famous because you were connected with
Kurt Cobain, who we'd only heard of because his record label promoted him
around the world. So with all that record label-generated publicity, yes,
you will do well on the internet. However, look at mp3.com and
audiogalaxy.com and the like -- there are thousands of artists whose work is
being ignored. I'd be willing to bet the success rate of those
internet-distributed artists is LESS than the 5% success rate of
label-related artists. It is extremely expensive to make someone famous,
barring the rare exceptions caused by word-of-mouth alone, and the average
musician does not have the tools to make themselves famous.

Okay, having said that, I still agree that the labels totally fuck over the
artists, I just want to dispute that the going it alone on the internet is
the way to make things right for the artists.

 I've not really posted to this list before but I've been on it for a few
 weeks now and couldn't resist joining in on this one....
 I agree its incredibly hard to get noticed amongst the 60,000+ bands on
 mp3.com etc from pure internet exposure alone and without the resources /
 connections of a label. My band iNSTYLUS, has been trying an all out
assault
 on web publicity for a couple of years now. We've put mp3s on mp3.com,
poeplesound.com, getoutthere.bt.com and have had them downloaded a large
 number of times. We've developed an internet site that has been reviewed
 well (www.instylus.co.uk), backed it up with numerous live gigs that have
 been reviewed well, and had positive reviews in industry magazines. But
 there seems to be a massive difference between success when you give
selected tracks away for free, and actually selling your music / getting a
 contract.
 Maybe once you've given a few tracks for free and you are percieved as an
 "interent band" your music is somehow devalued in the mind of the
 downloader, especially as the net is generally thought of as a place where
 everything is free eg napster.
 Anyway, I could go on but won't; just thought I've get it off my chest. If
anyone can visit the site and let us know what you think / tell other people
 about it (or if you have any suggestions for improvements of the site or
 music), it would be much appreciated. The site is at www.instylus.co.uk

yea, everybody read this. then lets all mutually agree to never
spend a dime on anything from the RIAA...
One thing, is that even though the artists do earn practically
no money in some cases, they get lots of exposure. I wonder how
many artists signed to these labels would do it anyway even if
they knew they would be so ripped off.

I'm no expert on this (I've never tried to mix) but the nice
feature about technics turntables is that there is no belt drive;
the table spins magnetically, from what I've heard. It would seem
that the table itself somehow becomes part of the motor. In any
case this makes them much much more reliable and able to withstand
DJ punishment like scratching & cueing etc...

There was one at the CMU radio station, and a friend of mine was
fairly decent at using it. I don't remember the brand, but it had
pitch/speed control and cueing, so there wasn't any technical reason
you couldn't use it instead of 2 turntables. I think it just takes
a little more 'getting used to' , since the interface is not as
direct.

Thanks Mike - I did forget to send it to the list!
Yes, we've done a fair bit of label promotion (UK only though).
We sent out a couple of hundred postcards, biog and letter to UK labels
asking if they wanted to hear a CD (several books suggest this approach).
The postcards were stamped and self addressed, leaving the A&R person just
to tick yes or no to a CD and providing their name. We got about 60
positives back from this and sent them all CDs within a couple of days. We
got some great complimentary feedback but the bottom line is that no-one in
the UK seems to have space on their label at the moment. A common comment is
that they have had to drop a number of well fairly well known acts and so it
would be impossible to justify taking anyone else on - even though they
really like the demos.
So, only one solid offer came from that batch was a "production publishing"
deal, the contract for which hasn't materialised yet, but it might not be
such a good deal to get into to be honest.
We've also had A & R approaches from quite a few gigs we've played around
the Northwest of England, but again at the end of the day, they've not had
any space on their label. But a couple of weeks ago we were approached after
a gig by a small new label that started out last year. They seem nice people
to deal with but don't really have much experience (or many connections).
They've offered us vinyl release and promotion on a couple of our tracks
targeted at dj's, (plus a remix of I'm coming hardcore by Manix - track from
1992). They would maintain the rights on the tracks for three years. This
means that if the tracks are popular, we're a bit at their mercy as to
whether they would release them on CD to the general public.
Anyway, if you know of any other approaches / marketing ideas, we'd be
grateful

Maybe that's because nobody talks about them.  It's the responsibility of BOTH
the artist and the common Joe to change the music industry.  If you want to do
your part, check out the thousands of artists who are being ignored.  Their
music is out there, freely available for downloading.

stream they used to have out there. The RealAudio links are still there, but

Gemini PT-2000's are similar to Technics, but they aren't built as well.
People don't seem to understand how much punishment a Tech 1200 can take.
You can drop it like five feet and it would still work perfectly.  You can
stand on the platter, and iit will spin you around.  These things are very
well built.  I Have a lot of experience with Numark TT-1's, and they are
shit.  They have horrible torque which makes for sloppy cueing and makes
scratching impossible.  Also, the pitch control is really bad.  It's
digital, so the pitch is either like 1.22 or 1.23, there is no in between.
This sucks, because it is sometimes impossible to get an absolute perfect
beat match.  Tech 1200's pitch control don't have any either ors, you can
get it at any number.  Same with Vestax D3's, they are also digital, but you
can still go in between numbers.  Vestax D3's are my turntabls of choice,
But I still highly recommend Tech 1200's.  It's not just a snobby thing,
it's hard to spin without them.

I see these things as more of an addition to turntables, not a substitute
for turntables.  For instance, it would be cool to spin on 2 turntables and
a cd deck.  But this is just what my friends who have used them have told
me.

Using Windows, I grab stuff using CoolEdit.

1)  Load CoolEdit and click the record button -- accept the default
recording parameters (44100, 16 bit, stereo) then pause the recording right
away.

2) Open the Volume settings for your soundcard. For the default Windows
volume window (you get by double-clicking the little yello speaker down by
your clock on the Start bar), set the Wave and Master volume levels to the
middle or so. Then select "Properties" from the "Options" menu. Then click
the Recording radio button, then check everything down in the listing of
volume controls, and click OK.  You should have a meter for "Mix" or "Sum"
up there somewhere. Set it to about the middle setting and check its
"Select" checkbox and UNCHECK all the other "Select" checkboxes. Close the
window.

3) Go to the hob.com site and click on the 100k Window Media stream link.
When Media Player comes up, wait until you're about 90% buffered and then
unpause CoolEdit.

That's it!

Sorry for OT....

My brother used to run a Friday night party at his college, and he dealt
with a lot of DJs... (credibility assurance :O) )

He says that some people had Technics 1200 for over 15 years and they
still work like a charm. As long as you take good care of them, they
work forever. In other words, don't be afraid to buy used Technics.

There are no moving parts in the Technics except the pitch control,
three buttons and a light. The rest are three magnets & electronics.

It's direct-drive table, spins up to full velocity extremely fast (I
forget the speed). As opposed to belt drives that take a while to spin
up.

(Using belt-driven turntables is not a good idea. Don't even think of
using one for scratching: you'll ruin the turntable. Belt-driven
turntables are for listening to records at the comfort of your home --
definitely not for mixing).

Technics 1200 has only one big flaw: pitchshift locks on a crystal too
much: e.g. if I try to do 34 RPM, it will jump to 33.3 RPM, sorta like
"pixel snapping." That's fixed in Technics 1300 (there's a button to
enable/disable this).

If you think that Technics 1200 aren't good, then you're arguing with
about 20000 DJs in the history of DJing that have been using these
technics since early 70's, when they got out.

He says Gemini don't have any good tables. However, if you're looking
for cheaps ways to start a DJ career, it's very good to buy Pioneer
CD-tops that make your life much easier. (Since vinyl isn't nearly as
easy to get as CDs).

He says that CD-tops are very usable. He says that about 50% of all
clubs in US and Europe work off the CD-tops. E.g. DJ Scribble uses
Pioneer CD-tops (and Pioneer sound FX).

He says the big difference between CD-tops and turntables is the quality
of the sound. (Turntables sound cripsier, but an average club attendee
probably wouldn't notice any difference, as long as you keep your CDs in
good shape (so they don't skip) ). If you burn stuff on a CD-R, make
sure that the source file is good quality (e.g. don't try to play
112kbps MP3s) and try to use gold CD-Rs... they are considered
"DJ-quality."

Mixing via CD-tops is easier because it's easier to maintain beatmixing.
However, you still gotta have the mixing skills, though (i.e. if you
suck at matching up beats, it won't help you).

CD-tops and turntables have their own pluses/minuses, you can be an ace
at either. If you prefer the "analog" control of a turntable, use that.
If you like electronics to do a good part of your job, use a CD-top.

Quality of a Cd-top makes a big difference, too, he says. Pioneer
Cd-tops is the best, he says, and Geminis are also good (some are really
good). Less expensive Geminis are crappy however. Also cheap ones from
Dannon, Numark, American DJ CD-tops should be avoided.

Numark and Vestax have also good direct-drive turntables. There are no
professional level good Gemini turntables: they are all entry-level.

He says Technics cost less in Europe. In US, used ones go usually for
$600 a pair. Check out eBay and other auctions, but make sure the person
doesn't ship them to you--but you instead go and pick them up (otherwise
they will get all banged up in transit).


Again, all info is as per my brother. Just thought this may be helpful
to those interested.

Here's my idea on the issue:
There are plugins for Winamp that play .asf files.. Now couldn't we
simply use the diskwriter output to stream a decoded .wav file (for
burning) directly to disk? 8) I've done this with (non-streaming) RA-
files before (using the new winamp-RA plugin!)..
Another option would be Xfileget, this one saves realaudio files, i
suggest it saves .asf files, too, as .asf is assumably also based on
regular UDP!

Well said. I think thats the only thing the majors are
good for really, is making someone famous. So if that is
your aim as a musician, then by all means go for it.

I still think record labels (talking about the small
independant ones now) are important, as a 'quality-filter'.
I think pretty much everyone would be more inclined to
buy a random release on a label with a good reputation
than buy some random mp3.com artist's CD.

The only thing mp3.com is useful for now is a place to
store your music - I don't think anyone expects to
get any promotion just by uploading stuff there. Its
just too big and filled with crap, frankly.

remember a line, something about the pharoah giving to the people house

Having a few songs on mp3.com and similar sites, I feel compelled to
reply.

I agree that you can't get any promotion just by uploading stuff on
MP3.com. However, you do get a chance to make yourself heard to people
who might not have otherwise found out about you. In that sense, MP3.com
is quite useful.

Filled with crap? Yeah, you might think so, especially if you listen to
the MP3.com charts--all tracks sound too similar. But very few people
that visit MP3.com actually care to look beyond the often-inflated
charts and find small gems that MP3.com (and similar sites, e.g.
besonic.com) has here and there. So what if a person isn't in a chart?
You may very well like his/her songs.

Instead, what people do is they pick a genre, go to the charts, listen
to a few tracks off the "top 100" and then conclude that it's all
same-sounding crap.

I'm thankful for sites like MP3.com--it lets people make themselves
heard to an international audience without having to sign up with a
label, whether major or independent.

Still think MP.com is all crap? Try this: every day listen to one song
from one MP3.com artist you haven't heard yet. Don't look at the charts,
just find a random artist every time. I bet you'll be surprised with a
good track every so often.

As far as promotion on MP3.com... Really, would any serious group or
band promote themselves solely through that site? I think that if
somebody is trying to get serious, they would spend their resources on
better things--such as releasing a full-quality CD (not like DAM CDs) on
CDNOW/etc, get signed up with a label (again, whether big or small). But
I don't think that they would pick MP3.com as their number one promotion
tool.

I've thought along those same lines, and it really works well in the movie
industry (for the most part), but when you have bands like Lit and The Offspring
on one end, and bands like Orzic Tentacles and Curve on the other end, it makes
you wonder: "Why the fuck is Lit popular and why the fuck isn't Orzic Tentacles
popular?"

In defense of Aronne, I don't think he meant that 100% of MP3.com was crap.
It's just that it's finding a needle in a haystack, which is probably true.  I
go by a rule that works rather well: 99% of everything is crap.

A few years ago, I was really into computer MOD/S3M/XM/IT music.  At work, I had
a good connection, and I downloaded the entire year's worth of the Hornet
Archive.  Since anybody and his brother could upload any damn song he wanted, a
great majority of the songs sucked ass.  Yes, there were good songs among them,
and yes, they kicked ass, but you really have to search for them.

So, it's not that your music sucks, but how to seperate your music (if it is
indeed good) from the mountain of shit in the MP3.com collection.

streaming broadcasts.  there's even a built in
scheduler which you can program to record events
while you're away from your computer.  the unregistered
version is limited to 40 second samples but registration
is only $11.95

Uh, yeah, what he said :-)

Seriously though, I didn't mean offense to people who use
mp3.com ... I obviously didn't explain my point well.
What Brendan said is pretty spot-on, but let me
say a couple more things.

I did not mean that _everything_ on mp3.com is crap.
But I think a very large percentage of it is - I won't
make up a number, but its alot. And I think most other
people think this as well. So in and of itself
mp3.com is useless by itself, because I don't see
that many people just randomly downloading tracks...
its just too frustrating (remembering something like
90-95 % of all internet users are still on modems)
Even if people do randomly download stuff, there are
soooooo many groups/musicians there now that how many
random 'hits' are you going to get?

The stuff that I have found on mp3com that I really like
was all stuff that other people recommended, or people who
promoted themselves some other way first.
(BTW here are a few good ones off the top of my head -
kettel, lightspeed - "she is following", some stuff
by Twine, and of course the Transmat mp3's)
