Actually, Apache should sue Real for making RealAudio server.  It's a fucking
joke!  It's merely a stripped down HTTP server that runs off a different port.
Why bother buying a Real server when you can run a seperate copy of Apache off a
different port.

Formerly half of the Walker Brothers who had monster hits in the
mid-sixties with The Sun Aint Gonna Shine Any More, Make It Easy On
Yourself, and No Regrets.  His later solo albums - ingeniously entitled
Scott 1, 2, 3, and 4 were crrtically well-received but didnt sell that
well.  His last release - Tilt a couple of years back was massively
critically acclaimed, but more generally considered to be unlistenable
(I've never actaully heard it).  his vocal style is pretty unique, or was,
its now been 'borrowed' by several people - most notably Julian Cope, who
championed Scotty quite loudly.

The Meltdowns been going on for a few years, hosted by an interesting
variety of people (John Peel, and I think jarvis Cocker have done one) who
put on an almost bizarre variety of music.  Its actually kinda started all
ready - I went to see Wire in February as a part of it, and Julain Cope got
to put on an utterly fantabulous two day mini-festy in April.  I very much
doubt Scott will appear with Orbital, or anyone - tho it'd be damned
interesting to see it if it did happen.

I must say I hate the South bank Centre as a venue, tho the sounds great,
and you get a great big stage which can be well used (as Im sure Orbital
will), its one of those places where you must sit down, not smoke, and
politely applaud - just no atmosphere man.  I saw Orbital at the Royal
Albert Hall, and it was the same story there - i think people want to play
there for thje pseudo-cred it involces, rather than because its a good
venue.  Give me  Brixton Academy or the Forum anyday.

Heh ! I'd agree with this. The scientific method can also be seen in
another context too...personally I'd say it's wrong to give up the
scientific method completely when it brings us things like quantum
mechanics, but a hard-nosed scientific outlook on everything is about as
mystical as you can get ! But then, nobody *has* to agree on everything
when it comes right down to it - and evidently they don't.

This has been bothering me for a very long time now. I don't pretend I have
answers to this anymore, but thats not to say answers can't be found.... If

way whatsoever. Be careful for the things you wish for too...

I ask I may offer my humble opinion here. I don't believe in the
personification of God and whats more I don't think God does either. I
think it is in the Hindu faith which says it really doesn't matter which
God you follow and what name this is given, you will find yourself in the
process. Like people who climb the same mountain claiming their path is
'right' and others are 'wrong' but when the summit is reached you are all
together again only seeing the scars you have caused together with a very
pleasant view. :-) An attitude of acceptance rather than tolerance is more
in order I would say, regardless of faith or scientific standpoint. IMHO.
Much is said in the Bible and you can pick and choose the truths you may
hold true to separate yourself from fellow humans in order to gain a sense
of belonging or righteousness, but some people are able to read between the
lines in what Jesus may have said and come into a great truth for
themselves. Heaven and hell is a duality which only serves to keep the book
alive and the child to burn, such insistence that these places exist
outside life produces much unnecessary harm.

Recently, in an issue of 7, the weekly clubbing guide released here in the
UK, two people had sent in a drawing they made of PvD after seeing him at a
venue in London, I think it may have been at The End.

Anyway, the story was like with the Emperor's New Clothes, PvD (or rather a
caricature) mumbles some high-level bullsh*t about his music as an artistic,
electronic ballet, etc. etc. ~yawn~ and the caption translates it to "I make
kiddie-trance".

Not that I want to slag people off for liking his music, because comparison
of music is entirely subjective, but that just confirmed my opinion of PvD
again. His music is all recycled, dull, uses the standard elements of trance
abusively and well, I fail to see how his music has been able to be so
successful. I demand something from an artist between one album and the
next, but PvD seems to polish his turd, put it in new wrapping and voila,
new album.

I can't help but to agree with Trym.  I'm sick of dudes like PVD and
"Superstar" Paul Oakenfold... all these guys get a really big head over
time.. and when it all comes down to it, they're just spinning other
people's music.

I guess I'm a bit biased though.. I've really gotten sick of this "epic
trance" shit... it's dancable.. but I have a hard time kicking back with
this stuff.  I've gotten more into downtempo and acid jazz.  For all of you
that want to experience something new, check out  the artists on Ninjatune
(www.ninjatune.net).  I've probably heard 75% of the artists on this label..
and they're outstanding.

Yes, I must confess that I fell for the whole "Oakenfold! Oakenfold!" thing
myself, as you all know from my previous posts. Now, I've seen him live, and
he did play a few good tracks, but come on, it's not like he created it!
It's other people's music! I paid an offensive 20 bucks for that too! :-( It
wasn't uplifting at all, and I was quite bored with it after about the first
hour or so.

Now, a DJ that I'd really like to see is Nick Warren. Although he too is
part of this whole "epic trance" thing, every damn mix I have of his is
good. (Mehul, you da mack by the way!)

Also, another DJ I like is Jon the Dentist. Although I don't know much about
him, and have heard only 2 or 3 mixes, what I've heard, I've liked.

But as for van Dyk, he has some really good stuff that is just catchy, and
he has other stuff that is really the same stuff over and over. I mean,
between "Perspective" and "Vorsprung.." there isn't a big difference! The
Ministry of Sound Sessions are good though :-))

But as for what I've been into lately, I'm not really sure. Of course, I'm
really looking for a good ALBUM, but I'm forced to settle for tracks. I have
a large collection of drum n bass, drill n bass, IDM, Autechre, Plaid/Black
Dog, and now trance, Ambient stuff like FSOL, and I'm STILL not happy. I've
been getting into Kruder and Dorfmeister on recommendation from Ian, and I
picked up "The K&D Sessions" the other day, which I quite like for relaxing
to after work. I also got an album the other day from Solea Amphibea that I
believe a lot of people on this list might enjoy. There was a little
discussion on the FSOL list about whether it actually is FSOL! It's very
very downtempo ambient stuff, very smooth.

But, the summer always brings out the excitement in me, so I want something
KICK ASS! Any recommendations?

You did not mention which mixes you have heard, but in case you do not
have the Additive Compilation 2, it's a desert island disc IMO.  I've
also heard great things about his solo album Pyramid, which is on its
merry way to me in the mail ;-)

If you can find it, another great trance mix cd is Armin van Buuren's
Boundaries of Imagination.

On the IDM jag, check out Boulderdash's We Never Went to Koxhut Island.
Fans of Plaid and Ae should love it.

    That is the same Nick Warren. But where did you get the epic
trance idea from...? In case anyone didn't know, NW is half of Way Out
West, who should've released a single and an album earlier this year,
but didn't.
    BTW, I'd recommend both of Way Out West's mixes of Hybrid's If I
Survive to everyone - even better than the one they did of Nothing Left.

Speaking of Hybrid: I really like this guy more and more! 8) There's
a pretty unique and new style to his music!..
I got this Hybrid Studio Mix at Radio 1 bootleg here, and it simply
kicks ass!.. I initially planned to upload it onto Marc's server, but
that is history now as it seems! <:-)

If you want excitement and fun early techno stuff, check out
the early Biochip stuff, though i doubt you'll find any over there!
<:-) It's old german Happy Hardcore somehow, but not the classical
happy-hardcore style!
He was also known under the name "Speedfreak", which i thought for a
LONG time was related somehow to the Oribital track from Green, but
the stuff he did under that alias was just hardcore, not much fun
involved!..

If *ANYONE* on this list knows *ANYTHING* about Biochip's Biocalypse
(you know someone who has it, or has heard it somewhere or you may
even have it yourself!) lemme know ASAP!.. I've been scanning for
this for ages!.. Had the CD once some 6 years ago but it got
stolen!... 8(

P.S.: You mentioned K&D, strangely enough i think of Bochum Welt
everytime i hear K&D, and concerning BW all i can say is: Avoid at
any cost, i haven't even heard such blatant ripoffs of Aphex-style
from Richard's own label-mates back then when Rephlex was young! <:-)
You know, Squarepusher, Autechre and Cylob somehow ALL sounded like
Aphex to me back then, not distinctive and unique in their own style
at all! 8)

I have to say i agree with you in large parts, but there's something
else to it: Paul van Dyk is around for a *VERY* long time, sure
that's no excuse for repeating oneself over and over and not
evolve like Orbital or Aphes prove it! But it gives hims some credit
that doesn't make me dump him straight away once i hear him repeating
himself! That dude made tracks as beautiful as "Forbidden Fruit" and
"For an Angel"! What's more is that he mixed the IMHO greatest mix of
all times, prolly the CD i heard most often in my life (yes, even
more often than In Sides): The X-Mix 1...
This mix is like the impersonation of a mix, it's the mix of all
mixes, the tracks blend so perfectly into eachother and the tracklist
is so damn welll chosen you just HAVE to perceive it as one gigantic
70-minute epic, kinda like the Box!...
X-Mix 1 is a *MUST-hear* for any Orbital Fan I'd say! ;-D
And for that i give him all credit in the world! 8)

The new(ish) Kid Spatula album, Full Sunken Beats, is amazing.  Paradinas
really hops a lot of genres, there's some drill and bass, some gabber, some
Brace Yourself Jason-style tracks, a lot of noise experimentation, just
overall great tracks.  You'll likely pay out the ass for it though...  I
spent 20+ bucks on it because I thought it was a 2CD...  Oh well, still
worth it.

The Fat Cats 1-8 Split compilation CD is great, as is the Cataract Beats
comp on Pitchcadet/aii.  More noise and gabber-influenced stuff.

Ok, I suck at writing about music, but its good stuff, grab it if you see it
:)

On the note of BT, here's some "rumour" news on his projects :

BT and Sasha as (Re)Verb are to release a chillout album on Peter Gabriel's
RealWorld label with ethnic, chill, ambient inspirations.

BT's latest single from MISL "Dreaming" should have hit Europe as imports
from the US, I know they're here in the UK anyway, two mixes that I really
can't remember were by which mixers, but hey, it's more BT stuff.

Also, the Fibonacci Sequence has been released on limited, white-label 12".
Still awaiting the delivery of my turntable, I haven't been able to listen
to it since I bought it at HMV, but it's an excellent song.

Lastly, I can't remember how long PvD has been around compared to BT, but I
"think" they've been around about the same time, right? Anyway, to compare
these two musicians, although I think it's sacrilege because one is
outstanding, the other isn't, then speaking of renewing himself, and
evolving over time.

See BT, starting from Ima, through ESCM and now MISL, innovates his own
music all the time. PvD may have released a tune now or then that has been
new, not recycled, of course he had to produce something new at some point
to have something to recycle, and those tracks are quality, but stuff like
"Tell me why", "Avenue/Another Way", "Words", well, it just fails to strike
me as any use. Like you say, if he kept trying to have a bash at new
material all the time, then even with less successful tracks he would
probably attract an even bigger crowd.
I don't even like BT/PvD's "Namistai" track, too much of PvD's recent
simplicity.

Right now, he's degenerating into producing dance-floor fillers that might
as well have been made by John Doe, his music has got no identity.

IMO, all of the above, of course. ;)

The problem I have is trying to burn a live gig to disc with separate tracks
but no gaps. I've followed some advice already given to me, which was to cut
& paste each track to separate .wav files and then burn in 'Disc at Once'
mode. But I am still getting gaps. After wasting my third disc I'm starting
to get ***Ked off!
Any help greatly appreciated!

I dunno exactly, but the X-Mix 1 is from 93 (when i got it!) and that
for sure wasn't the first time i heard from PvD, i think i even saw
him in Munich one or two years before that!.. That means he's around
almost as long as Orbital! 8)
I might be wrong, but it could be that he even had a brother called
Mike van Dyk who also used to DJ, but i'm not sure about that, it
could also just have been a joke by a friend back then! 8)

1st Advice: Get WinOnCD, it kicks ass in this field! 8) No problem to
burn without pregaps!

the problem is that in order to burn without pregaps, each track has
to be an EXACT multiple of the block/sectorsize (2352 for CDDA if i
remember right!) , otherwise the rest of the block will be zeroed out
(as a new track may only start right on a new sector!) and this will
become the feared pregap-klick!

So what you need is either files that have an exact multiple
of the used blocksize or a programm that prevents this pregap through
filling the rest of the block with oversampled/interpolated data
instead of zeroes, like WinOnCD does (as clumsy as it is to use! 8)

Just wondering... has anyone been banned from Napster because of the

I know this is off topic... I'm just trying to figure out how many
people were effected by this.  I really doubt all the people they banned
really had metallica mp3s on their computer.  I have the feeling that
they just went on at a random time and took a snapshot of *all* the
users, not just the ones sharing metallica crap er... stuff.  And I know
a lot of people on the list are into mp3s, so more than a few should
know about the napster situation...

I am very annoyed at this whole situation.  Arg!  Normally I use napster
to track down hard to find mp3s and now I've been banned, and I dont
even download metallica stuff!

Anyway, if people want to avoid a big long discussion, just send your
replies to me off list.  Peace.

The music-swapping software company uses the Digital Millennium Copyright
Act to protect fans from being unduly blocked from its service.
By Janelle Brown May 10, 2000

Tricky, tricky. Napster announced Wednesday that it will, indeed, comply
with Metallica's legal demands that the music-swapping software company
block over 300,000 of its users the band says were trading pirated Metallica
tunes.

But there's a little catch that Metallica probably didn't expect.

Under the terms of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, if an Internet
service provider receives a complaint about a user who is allegedly
violating a copyright, the ISP is supposed to immediately remove that user
from its service. But if that user thinks he has been misidentified and
submits a legal counternotification, then the copyright holder has 10 days
to decide whether to take legal action. If the copyright holder doesn't
initiate legal action against the user, the ISP must reinstate the user.

Now, Napster, identifying with the ISPs, is using this law to force
Metallica to take up its piracy concerns with individual Napster users. On a
page on its Web site, Napster explains this. "The Napster software will
direct all users barred as a result of Metallica's allegations to an
infringement notification page. That page explains the notice that Metallica
has given us, explains who Metallica has stated to us it intends to block,
and gives the user an opportunity to submit a counter notification if the
user has been misidentified. If the user has been misidentified, and
requests to be reinstated by submitting a counter notification under penalty
of perjury, then, unless Metallica chooses to pursue legal action against
that user within 10 working days of being notified of that user's counter
notification, the user is entitled to be reinstated."

In other words, Metallica had better prepare itself for an onslaught of
legal notices from angry Napster fans who feel that they have been
misidentified or otherwise unjustly served. Will Metallica and its attorneys
have the time and interest to pursue legal action against even a few hundred
(let alone 300,000) fans who might counterfile? The odds are slim -- even if
those fans were, indeed, violating copyrights. What a potentially awful
mess.

But even as Metallica, other artists and the Recording Industry Association
of America turn to the legal system to stop music fans from swapping pirated
tunes online, the courts may soon invite the recording industry in for a
visit on another topic: artificially inflating CD prices. According to the
Wall Street Journal, on Thursday the Federal Trade Commission is expected to
announce a formal complaint against the record industry for artificially
inflating CD prices. Fans have been complaining about this for years -- it
is, in fact, one of the main arguments of the more ideologically driven MP3
traders, who claim that they are justified in downloading those free
Metallica tunes because the cost of the CD is so unjustly astronomical ($16
for most CDs, as opposed to a production cost of mere cents).

Well, it turns out that those fans weren't just mouthing off. The FTC's
charge -- which is expected to be announced with a simultaneous
settlement -- targets the way record companies force retail outlets to keep
prices high by denying "cooperative advertising" benefits to record
merchants who advertise discounts. Retailers can rake in tens of thousands
of dollars in "cooperative advertising" from record labels -- but if they
dare advertise store sales that undercut the minimum prices set by the
record label, the labels deny the outlets that money. Surprise! No one drops
their prices, and the high prices set by the record labels remain the
standard. The FTC suit could potentially lower CD prices for all consumers.
Perhaps then those Metallica fans won't feel so justified in downloading
free copyrighted tunes; at the least, they'll have a bit more pocket change
to buy an extra CD or two.

Who can complain about that?

I got nailed by it, by having a bad clip of their sandman tour "which
happened to be name the same as one of their album songs"

One thing I do wonder is how is Metallica going to do this?  Are they going
to say Oh were forming a lawsuit against these people, but we don't know
their real names, addresses, or e-mail addresses. Hell all we know about
them is that they are from this IP address. Now some of the connections
that I have seen on there are corporate T1's and T3's now I would like to
see which corporate ISP's will risk a couple million a year for this.. If
it was a dial up user, I can understand it.

I have the sudden urge to melt all of my Metallica cd's  and tapes
"including some of the harder to find ones" into a nice big melted heap of
plastic, and stick a little napster user flag on top. Then ship it to the
production company.

all of way out west's remixes are awesome. their remix of the orb's

Love Stimulation has been a favourite of mine off that LP, does the trick !
If I find myself in that kind of a mood I find myself listening to things
like UltraMarine (Every Man And Woman Is A Star), still sounds good to me
after many years ! Infact that LP is the bomb, wonderful stuff. ;-) Other
avenues perhaps Banco De Gaia's track called Lai Lah (on the Maya LP),
early house music too like Sueno Latino (Luxuria), hmm....yes, I could
spend all day writing this paragraph !

All the ego's come crashing down like a lead balloon some day though, it's
a little sad really that it's part of the culture to build people up so
high and then stand by laughing when they hit the ground, imho. Nobodys to

Can't say I've bought too much recently, theres the Death In Vegas "The
Contino Sessions", even that was a while back..but excellent, and DJ Food
"Kaleidoscope" (Ninja Tune).. very nice btw <g>, as is a lot of Ninja
stuff. Middle of Nowhere's still doing the rounds here today, as is
Kraftwerk and some Tortoise, and Bjork - shes angelic. :-) You didn't
mention Jega, AFX, Mu-ziq, Beaumont Hannant, Boards of Canada...etc ? Check
out Meat Beat Manifesto too, he's an innovator.."Subliminal Sandwich"
although not the latest thing he's done is amazingly varied and
hypnotising, in a similar way to what Orbital can do it can just take you
over sometimes..heh, imho. Rant rant enthuse enthuse...

You sound almost as obsessive as me, and to be honest I think you may be
beyond help...perhaps best to take up painting or cooking or something ?

I found myself getting into ambient for a while...Global Communication,
Biosphere, HIA (?), theres the Brian Eno "Appollo - Atmospheres and
Soundtracks" CD which is an amazing relief should your head be in a bit of
a state for some stupid reason (as in too much booze)...but enough about
that... Theres a lot of material on the FAX label too I've been meaning to
follow that up sometime apparently some of it is excellent...comments on
this welcome...

Mostly just here to say I've found it's helped me to go back in time a bit
sometimes when things seem a bit stinky and you find Vengaboys just doesn't
*do it for you* anymore as it once did. <sniff> Suprising how many avenues
it opens up when I finally got round to admitting I don't know as much as I
thought. (doh!!)

Try mixing in some really dumb records with the something deeply serious..
such mindless hedonism is sometimes a complete headache inducing disaster,
but when it pays off...y'know, things are just peachy ! Impress friends and
pets !

Alright, clearly a bit older than BT then, who started around 93-94 I
believe. But still, age is no excuse for not innovating anymore. Since you
bring up Orbital, they do, and Biosphere who's been around since late 80s
keeps taking his music down different paths. Okay, it's a different genre,
but as it is at the moment trance needs a face-lift if it's ever going to
get me interested anywhere else than on the dancefloor.

In regards to trying to burn a CD without pauses between the tracks:  I
believe you have to have software that will do that in addition to the
Disk At Once but I'm not sure.  I got Easy CD Creator (I think that's
what it's called, it's not the deluxe 70 dollar version it's the
regular version) with my CD-ROM and if I do the Disk At Once there is
no gap whatsoever...

I didn't have to do anything special other than that.

yeah, i saw KK/amon tobin in boulder on friday. it was phenomenal. if you
have any interest in turtablism at all, go see this. if you have friends
that ask you questions like "what exactly do djs do? don't they just play
other people's records?" then go see this, and take them with you. they'll
see very quickly what it is, exactly, that a dj does. kid koala takes it
to a completely new level. (not to mention that he's an incredibly
likable, smiling little fellow who's not afraid to talk to the audience.)
i saw a few tricks i'd never seen before, including some mad pitch changes
where he transforms a recorded trumpet solo into his own damn trumpet
solo, and of course varying degrees of light-speed scratching.
yes, he rips shit up on four turntables, but sometimes it's two, and
sometimes he has a partner - "p love." together they recreate the
entirety of "scratchcratchratchatch," KK's first (and hard-to-find)
mixtape. there's also a band, bullfrog, that came on every so often to
provide live accompaniment/percussion to the turntable theatrics.

bottom line: your jaw will drop. aronne - i'll be interested to see what
you thought of this.

oh yeah, amon tobin was good too. sorta dark, funky, jazzy, evil dnb,
well-mixed.  unfortunately he's sorta shy when it comes to audience
interaction. hell, he hardly changed expressions at all through the entire
thing.

a while back there was a short discussion of the proposed plaid reissue
3CD. well, i think it's finally gonna go through, but ken's bitching about
legal matters reduced it to 2 CDs. the entirety of mvuki mbuki will still
be on there, as well as several unreleased plaid (and only plaid!) tracks.
i'm looking forward...

and out of COMPLETE curiosity, i'm wondering if anyone on this list does,
or has ever tried, DMX. reply privately please, so we don't have to listen
to anyone bitching (either pro or against).

I came across a program called CuteMX which does much the same as Napster
but you can share any file, however it doesn't share mp3's with the
copyright flag set to 'y'.

Would appear to me they are just IRC clients with built in ftp servers so
any Draconian measures that are taken up then in turn directly impact
freedom of speech too, throwing the baby out with the bath water as the old
saying goes ! Oh, there will be tears before bedtime my little loves ! And
lawyers are not unlike the pied piper, divergent problems like that are
their bread and butter... Information as art..or not, what a fascinating
catharsis !

And I just looked up catharsis to make sure that was the correct word, it
says..."to stimulate evacuation of the bowels".

Fascinating shit !!

Heh ! ;-) lol !! By the way, that proggy is written by Globalscape. And I
know of a Win9x version but not so sure of Mac and Linux etc, anyway the

think...semi-freeware. :-)

In addition to CuteMX and Napster, everyone should grab Gnutella (I got mine
from www.zeropaid.com)

It's not uncommon to see a good 9 terrabytes of files being offered on peak
nights.  Interface is pants though, looks like it took someone three minutes
to whip it up in VB :)

Gnutella does the same exact thing. It's wicked fast, and quite really

  compete ... i'm not sure who chooses them .. but i say we will all
  write mails , e-mails ... even send mors codes .. and try to get steve
  in (if it's possible,and if he wants ) .. i think we owe him at

Saw the Ninjas last night... if they are coming by your town
in the near future GO SEE THEM!!!!! Kid Koala is simply amazing
to see. I missed half of DJ Food's set but he had a pretty awesome
mix at the end of his set (I won't say what tracks he mixed, that
will ruin the surprise) Tobin threw down an awesome dark jungle set.
And I also got a copy of Tobin's new album at the show, top stuff...
Its a bit different than his earlier albums, supposedly no sampled
breaks on this one. So it has a more live, sort of organic feel
to it... It seems like a logical progression from Bricolage to
Permutations to the new album (supermodified).

The frustrating thing about FAX is that there are soooo many releases
and I'm not too sure how to sort through all of them... I own both
Jochem Paap CDs and the Abmiant Otaku repress. I really like all 3,
but unless you are interested in beatless ambient you'll probably
find these boring. Its similar to some Eno but usually the tracks
are much longer & repetitive - they require patient listening...
most tracks are 10+ minutes (Paap has one clocking in at 28 mins)
I think the Jet Chamber project sounds very interesting, that
might be the next FAX cd(s) that I buy. Read some of the reviews
at 2350.org about that...

(by the way, one thing I should mention is that they are starting
to repress a few of the OOP titles, which is very cool! I wish
more labels would follow suit..)

On another ambient tip, check out the Em:t / T:me label. Unfortunately
most of these releases are OOP (Em:t is out of business I think,
but some of the compilations are available through a licensing
deal with Instinct records) But if you ever see a copy of Woob 1194,
get this... its one of the best ambient albums I've ever heard.
As good as Orbvs Terrarvm. (and if anyone has an extra copy of
woob2 4495 ... let me know :) )

Hey...

Does anyone think a small campaign to encourage P&P to release The Visit
would help? I don't know exactly what, but I keep returning to those two MP3
excerpts I have and every time I listen to that track, I only shudder at the
thought of how hooked up to my HIFI I would be if it was released either on
a coming album, or as a single.

It has a sort of spacey feel, but also the dark, fast-paced drum pattern and
a bell/piano-like lead which almost really lifts the song.
Anyone with me on this one, feels like such a shame that a track of such
good quality gets no release.

Also, while I'm in the ecstatic mood this weekend put me in, I just have to
do a short review of David Holmes' new "Bow Down to the Exit Sign". I got an
album sampler this friday, (and the main reason for my excitement a copy of
Bleep's "The Launchpad" 12"), and it's got four tracks

Living Room
69 Police
Zero Tolerance
Hey Lisa!

A review I recently read said that Holmes has completely changed direction
and may not appeal to his base of listeners that much, but I just have to
say that's a pile of rubbish. If anything, this promo suggests more "Let's
Get Killed" stuff blended in with him taking his music even further
leftfield and going even more punk-ish. A female vocal on "Zero Tolerance"
with the smoky voice sounding oh, so much like PJ Harvey, and a male vocal
on "Living Room" who quite frankly came across to me sounding like the Chef
in South Park. Now that's worrying!

Those two named songs are also quite up-beat, not the symphonic or
instrumentals you may have got used to with "Don't Die Just Yet", "Rodney
Yates", "Gritty Shaker" and "My Mate Paul". But the samples are still
heavily relied on, and as the review said, this is the soundtrack to a film
that ought to be made.

"69 Police" uses some sample of a French-sounding bloke talking about the 69
Police, and is like a revamped version "Gritty Shaker" although that's not
entirely accurate. "Hey Lisa!" is almost orchestral in its resemblance to
"Don't Die Just Yet" with its string ensemble and monumental feel, probably
the best of the four on the promo.

What this album holds in store is unknown due to the sheer variety of styles
on the promo, but one thing is sure; it sounds good and David Holmes'
excursions into filmwork and punk will completely entice you when the album
is released. I predict it's another MUST HAVE-album from the Irish DJ.

Peepl,

just have to say the Diffusion Rooms album by Guardians of Dalliance makes
perfect summer listening, and will probably be an album to "stand the test
of time", just to use an overused term like that.

It's very jazzy, has a light female vocal that switches between english and
french, and now and again there's a trumpet lead which is really quite
haunting, but also uplifting.

I won't go into every track, but to me the one which is called "Oddly"
stands out as really fantastic. Some tracks are quite drum'n'bassy with fast
drums/beats, while others are almost like some of the more   laid-back songs
off Peshay's "Miles from Home" album, such as "Inner City Life" and
"Pacific".

Excellent album, worth checking out, as well as all the other Moving Shadow
artists.

Sorry that this was my umpteenth message not relating to Orbital, but hey,
no one's talking Orbital here at the moment anyway, so there you go.

Hey people,

I've been buying a lot of music lately, and most of it isn't much to speak
about. There is, however, one disc that's been getting a lot of attention,
and I've just about burnt a whole in it. It's a classic, and one that I
think we should all stand up and have a moment of silence for. It's none
other than "Hangin' Tough" by The New Kids on the Block. You know, those
wholesome kids from Boston.

It was released in 1988, selling over 8 million copies. Unlike their
breakthrough 1986 self titled debut, NKOTB toughened up and had the material
to support it. On such hits as "You Got It(The Right Stuff)," "Hangin'
Tough," and "Cover Girl," Boston area singers Donnie Wahlberg, Jordan
Knight, Jon Knight, Danny Wood, and Joe McIntyre showed they are a force to
be reckoned with. The songs were downright DEEP! A good example would be the
following from the title track, "Hangin' Tough..."

      Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
      Listen up everybody if you wanna take a chance.
      (Rap:) Just get on the floor and do the New Kids' dance.
      Don't worry 'bout nothing 'cause it won't take long.
      (Rap:) We're gonna put you in a trance with a funk song,
      'cause you gotta be
      Hangin' tough, hangin' tough, hangin' tough.

ahhhhh, doesn't that just touch the heart? Obviously it touched the heart of
millions because it drew packed arenas of screaming little girls, and put
"The Kids" on lunch boxes all throughout the world. What's not to like about
these little rascals? They paved the way for such groups as N'Sync,
Backstreet Boys, Five, and countless other ripoffs. But we all know that
these 5 talented young men had a talent that few could match. Unfortunately,
Donnie fucked up and got drunk all the fricken time, setting vodka fires in
hotel rooms. This put an end to their "good boy" image, and broke the hearts
of little girls, and some little boys. Donnie showed that you can take the
boy out of the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out of the boy, as he
was from Dorchester, Massachusetts, one of the toughest neighborhoods in
Boston. It's on those same streets however that the New Kids learned to
harmonize, and do retarded little dances, and the same streets that they
still have the respect of a few [homeless] people.

So, I suggest we ALL pay homage to the Kids. They've done a lot for you, and
now it's your turn to give back to them.

Just finished listening to Leftfield @ Homelands, very disappointing. The
music was great, but as someone else on the list mentioned the MC was just
too much, way over the top. It sounded like someone had jumped up from the
crowd and started shouting off. Even through Phat Planet we had to listen to
"Oi Oi" all the time. I had been looking forward to seeing them live but
this put me right off. I'm sure when you're there present and taking in all
the atmosphere it may be different? Did anyone go?

pants but...irritatingly....shit shit shit...your friend is still playing
your old record (noooo!!) and you just want to die. Drama rama ! Calamity !
Woe ! Etcetera !

Achgh !

For what it's worth, picked up Amon Tobin's new LP "Supermodified" this
week, well deserving of the hype it's got imho.. awesome.. and on the
stereo now: my bloody valentine - loveless (I love this too !) When I
listen to it the air moves around and my ears flap about, and it gives me
these whole range of feelings I can't explain, sometimes I start dancing
about !

just picked up another copy of mutations on cd (thats 3 now - have on espare
for trade/sale)
but this one has twelve tracks by elton john on it - inc. candle in the wind
and sorry seems to be the hardest word
bloke i got it of wanted 50 quid but i managed to get it for a tenner

the cd is exactly the same as the normal muatations as is the inlay sleeve -
strange

Hi,
I managed a similar thing, but with a CD by a group called RAC [Warp]. Got it
from the online store, arrived promptly, played it - turns out the entire album
is a mis-press; an early Troggs album. Almost surreal, but well worth it. Cost
me 6UKP, managed to get a replacement from Warp, plus a box of freebies and
promo goods, and was allowed to keep the original.

It's all good :)
