  14.     Some newsgroups can be liked to gauntlets for the poster to
  15. run down, with flamers arrayed on either side. Others are like a 
  16. year-round conference of the Association for the Advancement of 
  17. Pseudoscience. I've been a long while trying to come up with a good
  18. analogy for this group, and here's what I have--
  19.     It's like a slumber party at around 11:30 pm. Everyone's
  20. talking, even though you know it's getting late and time for go to
  21. bed. [Tor! Out!] Someone's saying "Good Night!" at least twice
  22. every minute, but this doesn't do any good until a lull comes in
  23. the conversation. So you all decide it's time to go to sleep, and
  24. everybody settles down. Then someone has to get one last remark 
  25. in. Then someone else has to. Outbreaks of giggling occur for no
  26. apparent reason. It looks like everyone might start talking again, 
  27. but the speakers are shushed.
  28.     The room is silent, but the last few remarks were pretty
  29. funny, so almost everyone is doing their darndest to keep from
  30. laughing. Then someone says something, and is vehemently shhh'ed, 
  31. but you don't hear the first remark. All you're aware of is lying 
  32. there, trying ever so hard to stay absolutely and completely quiet,
  33. and suddenly--

  35.     "SHHHHHHH!!!"
  36.  
  37.     --and this is the last straw for most of the room. You all
  38. crack up completely. Realizing that getting to sleep is a hopeless
  39. proposition, you start talking, beginning the cycle again.
  40.     I don't mean this as an exact analogy. Or even a vague ana-
  41. logy. It's just the only thing that comes to mind when I try to ex-
  42. plain the mood on this group to someone who hasn't read it.

  49.     On a slightly different matter, to change the subject, sup-
  50. pose someone tried to write an anthem for alt.tv.mst3k while under 
  51. the influence of pop music, then posted only a rough-draft version 
  52. because she hadn't seen the result of the rec.arts.tv.mst3k vote
  53. yet, and was worried r.a.t.m would get created before she had a
  54. chance to post the song in any form? I think it would go something
  55. like this...
