  20. (this is how sorcery came about, who Santanos was, etc)

  22. In the beginning, there was chaos.  it took on may forms, and eventually,
  23. one of the forms was a law.  it restricted the forms which the rest of chaos
  24. could take.  gradually more and more laws formed, until a world came into
  25. being.  soon, there was life in the world and mortals walked about, question-
  26. ing the universe.  in those days, there weren't as many laws as there are now,
  27. so the more pervasive laws were less obscured by tiny laws.  so it was that
  28. great mages conquered lands, because they understood how the laws worked
  29. and they could manipulate the laws to do their bidding.  the greatest of the
  30. great mages was Santanos, and he had many followers who worshipped him.  After
  31. many hundred years of ruling, Santanos decided to die and his soul rose into
  32. the heavens and blossomed from the worship of his followers.

  34. as his followers died, they merged with him and made him stronger.  and so it
  35. came to pass that he was cast out of the universe, because his might was too
  36. great for the universe to contain, and he became a universe unto himself.  in
  37. the world, his following continued to grow and more and more people fed him
  38. with their worship, until a great uprising of foes battered all of the worship-
  39. pers down and he was worshipped no more.

  41. after hundreds of years passed, one man ventured out into the battered plain
  42. where many of the worshippers died and he explored, seeking to be enlightened.
  43. and he came upon writings from the ancient times, which spoke of Santanos and
  44. his great power, and this man took it upon himself to contact Santanos and
  45. see what was up.

  47. so this guy managed to open a gate after a couple weeks meditation and fasting,
  48. and he bullshitted with Santanos for a while.  Then Santanos and he made a
  49. deal.  He would be Santanos's emmisary in the world and get lots of power, and
  50. Santanos would get his soul.  So this guy went around and got other people
  51. to be sorcerors and that's how sorcery came into the world.

  53. what sorcery is:

  55. Santanos talked with this guy and together, they came up with The Marketing
  56. Concept (marketing people will tell you differently, but don't you believe
  57. them).  Santanos wanted lots of souls so he delegated his authority to some
  58. of his favored followers in Hell.  He set up a system of sorcery, where he
  59. would give a name to each of his followers and allow them to summon each
  60. other -- *if* they knew the other's name.  Then, he figured, people in the
  61. world could get a taste of real power and would gladly give him their souls.
  62. He was right.  now, don't get him wrong.. Santanos doesn't remove their
  63. identities or anything like that, they just take up permanent residence in
  64. Hell, after they die.  He isn't evil, he just wants power (heh, heh).

  66. The idea was that each patron would appeal to a different type of person, and
  67. by putting the patrons in charge of the souls they recruited, they got a piece
  68. of the action, too.  So in order to attract people, the patrons each decided
  69. to give their servants special introductory offers.  The Black Widow gave
  70. the ability to turn into a spider, along with some information privalidges.
  71. Vengence gave a weapon which would kill anyone it touched (except the wielder,
  72. of course), Discord gave the ability to cause great destruction, and Luthil
  73. (the one responsible for the original downfall of Santanos's worship) gave
  74. membership in a multiverse-spanning network of righteous avengers.
