This is an AD&D character record sheet. The readme file follows:
THE LUNE CHARACTER SHEETS FOR AD&D 2ND EDITION.
by
Graeme Adamson
(graemea@iafrica.com)
FILES IN THIS ARCHIVE:
There are three primary files in this archive:
CHRREC12.WPT This is a character sheet template for WordPerfect 6.x
for Windows, and is designed to be typed on. Approx size
is 524kb.
CHRREC-L.WPD This is the same document, but designed to be printed out
and written on. Approx size is 530kb.
CHRREC-S.WPD This is a short version of CHRREC-L.WPD, for NPCs and
lower level or temporary characters. Approx size is
156kb.
Major differences between the three: CHRREC12.WPT is designed with
tables consisting of large blocks for freeform multiline text entry.
CHRREC-L.WPD has these blocks divided by horizontal lines, to make it
easier to write in. CHRREC-S.WPD is a very cut down version of CHRREC-
L.WPD.
Other files in the archive are this README file, and some TrueType
fonts; Optimum and Becker Medium are essential for correct display of
the character sheets, and Heidelberg can be used to replace
the Becker. Be sure to install Optimum and Becker Medium before loading
the documents.
HOW THE FILES WERE DESIGNED:
The character sheets are done in WordPerfect 6.x for Windows, and
consist of many tables with custom line types on a grey page background.
They are all for A4 size paper; a fair bit of work will be needed to
convert to other paper sizes (that's revenge for the Americans
programming applications that default to Letter size paper). Because of
the extensive formatting, redraws are not very fast. All text has been
set up as styles, so you can change the fonts by changing the relevant
styles. The table lines are set up as table line/fill styles, so they
can also be changed by changing the relevant style. All character sheets
have a grey page fill; if you don't want it, simply use
Format|Page|Border/Fill to remove it. The heading style has been done in
red to make it easier to locate places where the style has been used. In
CHRREC12 most of the pages have been named, so you can go to a page by
using the "Go To" command (Ctrl-G), and picking the page from the list.
CONVERTING TO OTHER FORMATS:
Can't be done. I used WordPerfect because no other wordprocessor I tried
supported the features I needed (in particular, being able to join table
cells vertically as well as horizontally). I tried Microsoft Word, Lotus
Ami Pro, and Symantec Q&A Write (Q&A Write could join cells vertically,
but the table functions were too time consuming - I do however have a
complete character sheet in Q&A Write format (.qw) if anyone wants).
There is no point in trying to convert the documents to other formats,
as it will come through looking like garbage. If Word had been able to
support what I needed, I would have used it, because it uses a more
widely used format, and runs a lot faster (WordPerfect runs like treacle
on my 486DX2-66 with 32MB of RAM).
CAMPAIGN SPECIFIC NOTES:
These character sheets have been entered for my specific campaign (The
World of Lune), so there are bound to be parts that are non-standard,
and some areas might be lacking.
* I don't use experience points in my campaign, so if you want to keep
track of XPs, you may have to create a section to keep them in.
* I use the Perception and Comeliness abilities in my campaign. If you
don't use them, simply delete the relevant rows in the table.
* I can't be bothered to keep track of encumbrance aside from a rough
look at charcter sheets to see if equipment looks too heavy, so you
may need to put in ENC values alongside the items if encumbrance is a
rule you enforce.
* I use pummelling rules that were published in a Dragon magazine years
ago (issue 83), so I have a small section to cover that on Page 4. I
also use a variant of the Oriental Adventures martial arts system, so
I have a page dedicated to that.
* Because we don't use Psionicists per se in my campaign, we don't have
specific class/kit details for the psionicist class. There are some
points on the psionics page that differ from the vanilla AD&D rules.
FILLING IN THE SHEETS ON COMPUTER:
CHRREC-L and CHRREC-S aren't designed to be filled in on computer, but
rather to be printed out and written on. Use the following guidelines
when filling out CHRREC12 in WordPerfect:
* Table cells not intended to be typed in have been locked using Table|
Format|Cell|Lock. Simply reverse the procedure on any cell you want
to modify.
* The standard font used throughout is Optimum 11 point roman. Headings
are in Optimum 11 point Bold. To make sure that anything you type in
is not bold, press END to get pass the closing BOLD code. A space has
been placed at the end of each heading, after the colon.
* If you find that a particular section is too small (e.g. Mannerisms
and Tendencies), expand the section by increasing the cell height in
0.6cm increments (that's 0.2362204724409 [approx] inches for those of
you using Dark Ages measurement units), and decrease the height of
another cell by the same amount. For example, on page one, you could
increase the size of "Mannerisms and Tendencies" from 1.8cm to 2.4cm,
and decrease "Marks, Scarring and maiming" from 1.8cm to 1.2cm.
* Any page that you don't need in your character sheet (e.g. the spells
pages for non-spellcasters), delete by placing your cursor somewhere
on the page, using Edit|Select|Page to select the entire page, and
pressing Del. All pages from Page 9 onward are optional, so merely
delete the ones you don't need.
PRINTING THE CHARACTER SHEETS:
I created the sheets to print nicely on a 600dpi HP Laserjet 4. They
still print well on a 300dpi laser, but the grey shading may not come
out too well. I've never tried printing them on inkjet or bubblejet
printers, but it probably take a while. Forget about using any sort of
dot matrix printer, unless you don't mind poor quality, and have lots of
time and priner ribbons on your hands. I strongly recommend a 600dpi
laser printer for best results.
KNOWN PROBLEMS AND CAVEATS:
* You will need WordPerfect 6.0a or 6.1 or later with a Windows printer
driver loaded to use these character sheets. WordPerfect 6.0 is too
unstable and will crash very frequently. The WordPerfect printer
drivers can't print these tables properly, so that excludes the DOS
version of WordPerfect 6.
* I have encountered a problem where in the "Name and Titles" box, if
you type a name followed by a space, WordPerfect stops dead in its
tracks. This may be a problem only on my PC (I'm running WordPerfect
6.1 under Windows NT Workstation 3.5), but if you do encounter such a
problem, use a hard space (Ctrl-Space) instead of a space.
* I don't know how much memory your printer will require, but I'm
pretty sure it will be more than 2MB. If you get "Out of memory"
errors on your printer, remove the grey background from the document,
and try again. My printer has 14MB of RAM, so I've never had a
problem.
* These documents will generate large print files (typically 4.2MB), and
take a long time to print (typically 30 minutes to 90 minutes on my
setup).
* If you have imported a bitmap into the document as a character
picture, and it prints in black-and-white instead of in shades of
grey, this procedure should correct it:
Select the graphic, select Graphics|Edit Box. The graphics feature
bar should pop up. Click on Tools on the feature bar, click the
bottom right icon on the resulting floating box, select Print
Parameters, and choose WordPerect dithering and Error Diffusion. This
should correct the problem.
* If you discover any problems, please let me know at
graemea@iafrica.com.
SUGGESTIONS:
If you have any suggestions regarding the sheets, please let me know at
