Family History:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pacal was born on the Yucatan peninsula of Mayan parents. His father, Chan-
Baalum, was in Star Fleet during his childhood, one of the many officers who
almost never set foot upon a starship. He was sent to the colony world of
Fillandia and later moved his family there. The colony consisted mostly of
scientists and their families, most of them studying Fillandia's strange sun
which cycled through periods of intense solar activity to periods of almost
none. His father was among the first to realized that the world's small native
population (a large quadruped race known as the Ariolo) was in trouble, and
that without some form of intervention, they would eventually perish due to an
intense solar event.
The Ariolo, also aware of their predicament, petitioned the Federation for
assistance in preparing and moving the entire Ariolo population to a new
homeworld. However, even choosing the right world had not been easy. Star Fleet
had placed certain constraints on how far they were willing to move the Ariolo.
And Chan-Baalum's task was to help determine which world would be best and how
it ought to be prepared for the arrival of the Ariolon colonists. After much
haggling with Star Fleet over expenses and the non-intervention policy, a ten-
year time-table has finally been set for the preparation of the new world and
three years has been allotted to the move itself.
Pacal's mother, Zuk-Xulum, earned her Ph.D. in xeno-archeology while studying
the Ariolon ruins. Her dissertation related Mayan history and technological
development to the Itsel-Classic Period of the Ariolo.
Pacal's older brother, Copan-Baalum, is a biologist on Fillandia. He's
currently writing his dissertation on Ariolon physiology and how it might be
effected by the new planet's environment. He's also vitally concerned with how
other Fillandian fauna and flora will survive in the new environment. While a
Genesis Team has worked tirelessly in forming the basis of the transplanted
ecosystem, thousands of details still have to be worked out in order for the
project to be a success.
Pacal's younger brother Pacmuuk-Baalum, is a midshipman in Star Fleet,
currently serving out his cadet cruise. His specialty is in computer
simulations.
Personal History:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pacal's best friend happens to be an Ariolon by the name of Xan. It was with
Xan that he learned the methods of survival out in the Fillandian jungles. On
one occasion, one of these jungle expeditions almost killed him. He encountered
an Azulan flower, the pollen of which sent him into a violent asthmatic attack.
Xan flung Pacal over his back and carried him for four hours, at top speed, to
the nearest medical facility.
Later, while exploring the same area, he found an ancient Ariolon settlement
(or at least the ruins thereof). It was set within a chasm, in a place the
Ariolon could no longer venture due to their mass. As it happened, he stumbled
upon it quite by accident, but it proved to be a defining event of his youth.
The discovery of the ruins led to more research being done by his mother and
was featured as a major section of her Ph.D. research.
Service History:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pacal entered the Academy at 18, mainly at of the urging of his father.
Throughout his Academy training, Pacal excelled with his Astrogation studies
and in computers (in fact, he'd managed to crash five different Star Fleet
Academic computers before they finally put him on the security team in charge
of keeping hackers out of the system). During his cadet cruise on the USS
Curie, he worked on developing a new method for navigation through highly dense
asteroid, plasma, or gravitational fields. This method was actually used as a
last resort when the USS Curie was damaged when discovering a previously
unknown field of high-energy plasma.
After being transferred to the USS Tali for his first 'real' Star Fleet service
experience, he assisted in streamlining the ship's sensor operations which
resulted in reducing the overall load on the computer systems. However, because
the sensors were down so often for "upgrading purposes", he got a bad
reputation on the ship as somebody who screwed-up most anything he touched. It
didn't help when he stuck user-specific viruses in the computer to annoy the
people who were giving him grief about it. The resulting reputation was
difficult to shake, and despite the fact that he finally got the Tali's sensors
working well, he received poor evaluations from his supervisors. He'd finally
come to the conclusion that Star Fleet is a big bureaucracy, and that the only
way to get ahead is to not be seen. That was when he was contacted by a clerk
in Star Fleet Personnel who assured him that his work hadn't gone unnoticed
after all. He'd soon be sent a new ship where he'd have plenty-time for
experimentation.
"Uh-oh," Pacal thought to himself. "They're sending me to the boonies."
