INTRODUCTION
1978 was a hectic year for Bob Dylan. Renaldo & Clara finally premiered
and got mostly bad reviews. A World Tour that in the end covered 10
different countries with 115 shows! A major new record, STREET-LEGAL, the
first in more than two years. A compilation, MASTERPIECES was released
in Japan and later in Australia, a live double album, AT BUDOKAN. A lot
of interviews to promote both the new movie and the tour. A lot of media
coverage. And in the end, a new beginning ...

The World Tour 1978 consisted of three parts:
1. The Far East Tour in February-April
2. The European Tour in June-July
3. The American Tour in September-December.
These parts will be referred to as leg 1 2 and 3 below.

3.4 The rehearsals
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The rehearsals started in December 1977 and continued thru January and the
first of February. Rehearsals from April before the European tour are known
and there are most likely also rehearsals from May and September, although
there are at this point in time no circulating tapes after April.
The sound quality of the existing tapes varies from passable to excellent.

3.5 The sound checks
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From this tour we have a unusually large number of sound checks.
Although the sound quality varies from utterly dire to dreadful, these
tapes are of certain interest as the sound checks often were used to
check out not only the sound but also new songs. We have here a number
of songs, that are possible new Dylan compositions (* below) and that
were shelved for good (?) when Dylan became a New Born Christian and
started working on the Slow Train Coming songs.

the tour, and it was all to be so much much better later on!!

Two of the shows in the European leg featured Eric Clapton as guest guitarist,
the show in Nurnberg on July 1, and the last show in England on the
Blackbushe Aerodrome. In Nurnberg Clapton joined the band for the
encores, 'I'll Be Your Baby Tonight' and 'The Times ...', and in Blackbushe
on Forever Young.
