INTRODUCTION
A year that started with three months in Bible class at The School
of Discipleship in Southern California, and ended with the start of the
famous Gospel Tour. Once again Bob Dylan did the completely unexpected.
Not only did he became a newborn Christian, he recorded a gospel record
with only original songs and hit the road with a show that did not
contain one single song from his previous records!

3.1 Introduction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Gospel Tour consisted of three parts:
1. The first leg in November-December 1979
2. The second leg in January-February 1980
3. The third leg in April-May 1980
These parts will be referred to as leg 1 2 and 3 below.
This tour is unique among all Dylan's tour in that it:
* features only the gospel songs, no "old" songs,
* contains almost no variation between the shows,
* does not contain any solo acoustic performances at all and that it
* features lengthy raps from Dylan between songs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All the Santa Monica shows are excellent and here Dylan performs in front
of an enthusiastic audience, not all that common during this tour.
The reason is that these were four benefit shows to aid World Vision
International, a non-denominational Christian charity organization.
In complete contrast the audiences at the two shows in Tempe are probably
the most hostile Dylan has ever played to, before and since. The second
show in particular features some lengthy angry raps by Dylan and is unique
in that Dylan refused to play any encores.

Lay Lady Lay is an instrumental fragment only. Dylan responds with "OK,
we'll play it, if you sing it" to one of the ubiquitous requests for
this song.
Recommended show is Hartford, May 8.
