INTRODUCTION
Joan Baez helps establish Bob Dylan as the leading folk song artist, he
performs as guest or "surprise" artist at a number of her concerts. The
second important album, THE FREEWHEELIN' BOB DYLAN is at last completed and
released. Dylan continues his almost frantic song writing, this year sees no
less than 34 new songs and also a number of poems. The third album gets
recorded rather quickly and is completed by the end of October. It is not
released until January 1964.
1. CALENDAR
January 1/2/3 Dylan is interviewed for the English "performing arts"
magazine "Scene"
January 2/3 Dylan visits Rory McEwen and meets up with Eric von Schmidt,
Richard Farina and Ethan Signer. McEwen also takes Dylan
to meet Robert Graves.
January 2/3 Possible appearance at the Surbiton and Kingston Folk Club,
Surbiton, Surrey.
January 4 Second and last day of recording "Madhouse on Castle Street"
January 5 Flies to Rome to join Odetta and to try and locate Suze
Rotolo. She has however just returned to the US.
He performs at a folk club in Rome and writes both "Girl
From The North Country" and "Boots Of Spanish Leather".
January 12 Back in London Dylan, von Schmidt and Farina join Martin
Carthy on stage at The Troubador.
January 13 BBC broadcasts "Madhouse on Castle Street".
January 14-15 Dylan appear as Blind Boy Grunt on some six tracks during
the recording of the album "Dick Farina" and Eric von
Schmidt"
January 16 Dylan flies back to New York.
January Dylan writes a poem called "Go Away You Bomb" for Izzy Young
who is compiling a book on "the bomb". The project is never
finished.
January 16 A couple of new songs are recorded at the Broadside office.
January 21 A new song based on the old English tune "Nottamun Town" is
performed at Gerde's Folk City. It is called "Masters Of War"
January 24 Some more new songs are recorded at the Broadside office.
February Dylan appears on Skip Weshner's radio show.
February/March Nat Hentoff interviews Dylan for the liner notes to the new
album. Parts of the interview later appear in the June 1963
Playboy magazine.
February 8 Recording of the so called "Banjo Tape" in the basement of
Gerde's Folk City.
March Dylan is surprise guest at Oscar Brand's "World of Folk
Music". He performs two new songs "Girl From The North
Country" and "Only A Hobo"
April Release of the promotional edition of THE FREEWHEELIN'
BOB DYLAN
April 12 Town Hall concert. The concert programme features a new
Dylan poem "My Life In A Stolen Moment". this is the first
concert in which Dylan performs his own songs only.
The concert is recorded by CBS for a possible live album.
April 24 What is scheduled as the first recording session for
THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN' turns out to be the last
FREEWHEELIN' session.
April 25 Dylan plays at The Bear in Chicago.
Krogsgaard attributes this concert to May.
April 26 Studs Terkel show on Chicago WFMT radio. Dylan performs
seven songs, including four new: "Farewell", "Bob Dylan's
Dream", "Who Killed Davey Moore" and "Boots Of Spanish
Leather"
May 12 The "Ed Sullivan Show" incident. Dylan refuses to appear
when he is instructed not to play "Talkin' John Birch
Paranoid Blues".
May 18 Monterey Folk Festival. Duet with Joan Baez on "With God
On Our Side"
May 27 Release of THE FREEWHEELIN' BOB DYLAN
May/June Stays with Joan Baez in Carmel, California.
May/June Returns to Minneapolis and is as usual recorded by
Tony Glover.
July 5 Dylan attends a "Voters' registration rally" in Greenwood,
Mississippi, performing yet another new song "Only A Pawn
In Their Game". Part of this performance is filmed and
included in the film "Don't Look Back".
July 26-28 Newport Folk Festival. The festival programme contains
a Dylan poem called "For Dave Glover"
July 30 Dylan records two songs for the TV-program "Songs Of
Freedom", broadcast on WNEW.
Summer Dylan is surprise guest on NBC's "Tonight" program.
August Release of the single "Blowin' In The Wind/Don't Think
Twice. It's All Right".
August Dylan is interviewed by Jack Smith from the radical
newspaper "The National Guardian". The interview is
later reprinted in Broadside.
August 3 Dylan is guest performer at Joan Baez' concert at the
Camden Music Fair in New Jersey.
August 6, 7 First and second recording sessions for THE TIMES THEY
ARE A-CHANGIN'
August 10 Dylan is guest performer at Joan Baez' concert in
Asbury Park, New Jersey.
August 12 The third recording session for THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN'
August 13, 16 Dylan is guest performer at Joan Baez' concert in
Connecticut and later in Massachusetts
August 17 Dylan is guest performer at Joan Baez' concert at the
Forest Hills Stadium.
August late Dylan is interviewed by Sidney Fields from New York Mirror
August 28 Dylan performs at the Washington Civil Rights March.
October 9 Dylan is guest performer at Joan Baez' concert at the
Hollywood Bowl.
October mid Dylan is interviewed by Michael Iachetta for the
New York Daily News.
October 19 Dylan returns to solo concerts, this day at Ann Arbour Hill
Auditorium.
October 23, 24 The third and fourth recording sessions for THE TIMES
THEY ARE A-CHANGIN'
October 23, 24 Dylan is interviewed by Andrea Svedburg for Newsweek.
October 25 Philadelphia Town Hall
October 26 Carnegie Hall, New York. Audience includes Dylan's parents.
This show is also recorded by CBS for a possible live album.
October 31 Last recording session for THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN'
November 2 Boston Jordan Hall
November 3 Syracuse University Regent Theatre
November 23 Dylan gives a reluctant concert somewhere in New York State,
the day after the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
November 30 Newark Mosque Theatre
December 13 Dylan receives the Tom Paine award at a Bill of Rights dinner
held by the Emergency Civil Liberties Committee at the Grand
ballroom of the hotel Americana in New York. In a very
uptight acceptance speech Dylan questions the validity of
what his wealthy and liberal audience believe they are
fighting. He even says that he can understand Kennedy's
murderer. A few days later he sends a poem called "A Message
from Bob Dylan" to the Committee in which he is offering to
make up for any losses in donations that may be the result
of this unfortunate speech.
