  104. B1  The V7SETUP-Logo hardly affects the starting time of Windows!
  105.     The SPEA logo informs you about the installed version of
  106.     the driver - which is important for tech-support - and at the same 
  107.     time it proves that the driver has been correctly loaded!
  108.     Set up a permanent SWAP-file. 
  109.     Defragment  your hard disk regularly (e.g. with Norton 
  110.     SpeedDisk or DEFRAG from DOS).
  111.     Remove all unnecessary entries from the WIN.INI (e.g. unused 
  112.     fonts). 
  113.    
  114. B2  Install (Superdisk) the GDC-Software (Pos.1)!
  115.     Activate (in System BIOS) the SHADOW RAM for the Video BIOS.
  116.  
  117. B3  -Add the following line to SYSTEM.INI under [CAR1K.DRV]: 
  118.      CHIPSYNC=1 
  119.     -For the MIRAGE/MERCURY P64: BASEADDRESS=0,1 or 2 
  120.     -Decrease the vertical frecuency with the V7SETUP or CLMODE. 
  121.     -For systems with AWARD BIOS 4.50: You`ll find in BIOS, under the 
  122.      option CHIP FAETURES,the point SNOOP AHEAD. Set it to "enabled".
  123.     -AMI System Bios: disable external cache.
  124.     -AWARD System BIOS: install BIOS 4.50G Update Rel. 1404.0103.
  125.      Important: Before installing a Bios update please prepare a backup
  126.      of the hard disk!
  127.     -PCI Bios: set option "CPU to PCI byte merge" or "CPU to PCI burst
  128.      write" to "disabled".
  129.     -EMM386 Option delete the HIGHSCAN (CONFIG.SYS) option. 
  130.      Use EMM386 Version 4.49 from DOS 6.22!
  131.     -Increase the "Files=" option (SYSTEM.INI)
  132.     -Install a permanent swap disk for Windows.
  133.     -Deactivate 32 bit hard disk access.
  134.     -Don't use a background BMP, background virus scanner or other
  135.      desktop programs (e.g. Norton Desktop).
  136.        
  137. B4  Set - according to the BIOS setup in your computer (AMI, Award)
  138.     DEQUOPLE REFRESH, REFRESH=HIDDEN , REFRESH=AT-STYLE or REFRESH 
  139.     from "disabled" to "enabled" or vice versa.
  140.     Ask your dealer for the latest system BIOS versions 
  141.     (e.g. AMI BIOS Rel. 1.00.12.AX1). Important: make a backup
  142.     of your hard disk first!
  143.  
  144. B5  Exclude (x=) the following memory areas: A000-C7FF
  145.     If you get the message 'No UMB's free' then make the following
  146.     entry in your CONFIG.SYS (example):
  147.     DEVICE=C:\qemm386.sys R1: RAM x=B000-B7FF
  148.     V7-MIRAGE: (message from V7SETUP): No V7-MIRAGE found!
  149.     Make the following entry in your CONFIG.SYS:
  150.     DEVICE=C:\qemm386.sys RAM X=C000-C7FF 
  151.     or ST:M XST=C000-C7FF or ST:F XST=C000-C7FF
  152.     Alternative: use EMM386 ver. 4.49 from DOS 6.22!
  153.     386MAX: delete the following entry from your WIN.INI:
  154.     "load=...\QPOPUP.EXE".
  155.  
  156. B6  With the TEST button you can only test the setting of
  157.     the vertical frequency in its current resolution and colour depth. 
  158.     If you change resolution or color depth, the TEST button will be 
  159.     deactivated.
  160.     For V7-VEGA: There is no TEST-button available. 
  161.     In order to adjust the vertical frecuency, use the program CLMODE.
  162.  
  163. B7  Find in the block [boot] of the file SYSTEM.INI the line  
  164.     DRIVERS=MMSYSTEM.DLL. Delete the entry V7START.DLL.
  165.     Install the current BIGWIN driver (available in the SPEA BBS).
  166.     PCI systems: disable the function PCI Burst Mode in your PCI
  167.     system BIOS.
  168.  
  169. B8  Add the following line to the CONFIG.SYS:
  170.     e.g. C:\qemm386.sys R1: ST:M RAM x=C000-C7FF
  171.     Use the memory exclusion X=C000-C7FF also for other cases of
  172.     memory shortage  (EMM386, ...).  
  173.     Alternative: use EMM386 ver. 4.49 from DOS 6.22!
  174.  
  175. B9  Insert the following line: logooff=1  in the block [car1k.drv] of 
  176.     the file SYSTEM.INI.
  177.      
  178. B10 The Programm EFIX can help you eliminate this unpleasant message. 
  179.     (EFIX is available in the BBS)
  180.  
  181. B11 Slow down the bus-clock using the system-BIOS or jumpers on the 
  182.     main-board.
  183.     ISA: 8MHz    VL: 33MHz 
  184.  
  185. B12 Delete (but save it first!) the file IFSHLP.SYS.
  186.  
  187. B13 Use COM 2 for your mouse; load the mouse driver MOUSE.COM 
  188.     additionally.
  189.     Using the Mitsumi mouse driver 6.0 only 256 colors are available 
  190.     under Windows 3.1. 
  191.     Use the actual (Microsoft) mouse driver (MOUSE.COM). Many mice offer
  192.     a Microsoft mouse mode - use this where possible.
  193.  
  194. B15 The VideoSeven drivers specified in Windows SETUP cannot be used 
  195.     for the SPEA graphics boards. They only work with the VideoSeven 
  196.     boards (e.g. URAM11) of the original american V7-series.
  197.  
  198. B17 TIP:
  199.     Windows uses two blocks of 64KB each for the administration of the 
  200.     system. These blocks can┤t be accessed or increased.
  201.     Little free space in these blocks may lead to various problems in 
  202.     Windows. These factors cause shortage of free space in these blocks:
  203.     - high resolutions combined with high colour depth
  204.     - if there are many Import- and Export-filters installed
  205.     - If there is a big amount of installed TrueType- oder PostScript-
  206.       (Adobe) Fonts
  207.     - many windows/icons in the program manager
  208.     - some programs, when ended, do not release the resources they 
  209.       need to run.
  210.  
  211.     Some specific hardware configurations may happen to accentuate these
  212.     problems; but an absolutely smoothly running system is also possible!
  213.     
  214.     Please check the following system bios options (if available):
  215.     ISA SHARED MEMORY ... set to dis-/enabled
  216.     ISA MEM BLOCK BASE ... set to C800, 32k   
  217.  
  218.     According to Microsoft, the solution is available with the release of 
  219.     Windows 95. In the new OS the resource administration
  220.     is adapted to the current hardware and software demands!.
  221.     For those users who don't wish to change to Windows 95, we can only
  222.     offer the following tips and solutions in the case of lack of
  223.     resources: 
  224.    
  225.     - Install the current Big Win Version (>= 2.1)!
  226.  
  227.     - Keep the resolution and the colourdepth as low as possible or change 
  228.       them according to the main application. 
  229.       The V7-BIGWIN Utility: SPEAVIEW would be helpful here.
  230.     - WIN.INI Files:
  231.       deactivate all unnecessary filters and fonts 
  232.       (e.g.  add a semicolon at the beginning of the line)
  233.     - Check on the use and release of resources of all Windows-applications
  234.       you use. Select, if possible, a lower resolution or colour depth for 
  235.       the display.
  236.     - Close all unnecessary windows in Programm Manager and try to avoid 
  237.       running any utilities when starting Windows 
  238.       (keep the Autostart window empty)                 
  239.  
  240. B18 Close the program SPEAview.
  241.  
  242. B19 Please note:
  243.     The individual user no longer has his own system directory. 
  244.     Drivers, fonts, grabbers and so on will be loaded from a directory on 
  245.     the server, which has been installed by the administrator of the 
  246.     network. Since this directory as well as the files in it contained are 
  247.     usually write-protected, only the network administrator can install new
  248.     drivers.
  249.  
  250.     - Driver installation for V7-MERCURY and V7-MIRAGE:
  251.     The network administrator copies (unpacks) all the files from the
  252.     Installationsdiskette/s into the network directory from Windows:
  253.     e.g.  x:
  254.           cd\public\windows
  255.           expand a:*.drv
  256.           (expand a:*.fnt)
  257.           expand a:*.386
  258.           expand a:V7*.*
  259.           expand a:s3vga.*
  260.           copy a:V7*.*      
  261.           attrib +r *.*     // protect files against writing
  262.     It is not necessary to copy the remaining files of the installations-
  263.     diskette (e.g. fonts) for they are already available in the 
  264.     network-directory (just like "expand.exe").
  265.     If you want to install more versions (V7-MERCURY and V7-MIRAGE), use 
  266.     the new files "V7*.*". (The drivers have different names, therefore 
  267.     they do not affect one another)
  268.     You can now select the driver you desire on your Workstation.
  269.  
  270.     - Existing Installation (e.g. with VGA-driver):
  271.       Start "WIN V7SETUP" .
  272.       Since the Windows-Server-directory must be contained in the path too,
  273.       the file "v7setup.exe" will be found without resorting to the 
  274.       installation diskette.
  275.       IMPORTANT:
  276.       If V7SETUP asked for the installation diskette, that would mean that:
  277.       either not all the necessary files are in the server, or 
  278.       "v7setup.exe" has been found somewhere else (in this case call
  279.       "win x:\public\windows\v7setup" directly).
  280.  
  281.     - New installation of a workstation:
  282.          e.g.  x:
  283.                cd\public\windows
  284.                setup /n
  285.       Select userdefined setup .
  286.       Choose the driver (Manufacturer┤s diskette ).
  287.       Select desired drivers.
  288.  
  289. B20 Mirage/Mercury: SYSTEM.INI , see [CAR1K.DRV]: Set option: CHIPSYNC=0 
  290.     Get the current *.DLL files from Borland.
  291.     Note: according to Borland there are no DLL files for PCI boards
  292.     for version 3.1 of the software.
  293.  
  294. B21 In order to deinstall the old BIGWIN driver (or to install the new one)  
  295.     the following files are to be deleted :
  296.                   V7*.*  
  297.                 SPEA*.* 
  298.                   S3*.*
  299.                 BIGW*.*

  301.                [CAR1K.DRV] Block in the file SYSTEM.INI  
  302.      First configure Windows to standard-VGA using Windows-SETUP.

  304. B22 Please make sure that the system, the system-BIOS and the graphics-
  305.     board comply with the same level of PCI. Mercury CI and Mercury Lite
  306.     only support PCI version 1.0 and may not function correctly in PCI
  307.     version 2.0 systems.

  309. B24 Memory Manager 386MAX: Remove parameter VGASWAP.
  310.  
  311. B25 FASTSCSI.EXE only runs with the english Windows version.
  312.     Get EUROSCSI.EXE from Adaptec's BBS.

  314. B26 Mirage/Mercury: the VESA mode TSR must be loaded in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
  315.     (e.g. V7MIRVBE.EXE).
