1. Before installing Windows 95
-------------------------------
1.1. How to get the updated software from IBM
---------------------------------------------
Before you install Windows 95 on your ThinkPad, you may need to
get some updated software from IBM or Microsoft.
IBM PC Company is providing the updated software through several
channels as follows. It is suggested to get the latest software
from those channels so that you can set up Windows 95 on your
ThinkPad systems with the information described in this document.
<WWW server on Internet>
The home page for IBM PC Company file library index is;
http://www.pc.ibm.com/files.html
Select "IBM Portables, Notebooks, Laptops Files" to find the
necessary software.
<FTP site>
The IBM PC Company FTP server address for mobile product software
fixes and patches is;
ftp.pcco.ibm.com/pub/mobiles
<CompuServe ThinkPad Forum>
Join CompuServe ThinkPad Forum (GO THINKPAD) and download the
necessary software from the library.
<IBM PC Company BBS>
Use a terminal emulation software and modem to connect the IBM PC
Company BBS in the US. The phone number is;
919-517-0001.
<Nifty-Serve IBM Forum in Japan>
Go to Nifty-Serve FIBMJ Forum (GO FIBMJ or library #20) and get the
necessary software (Japanese software only).
<PEOPLE BBS in Japan>
Go to WIN95.CC Forum (Library #5)and get the necessary software
(Japanese software only).
If you cannot get the updated software from either one, please
contact your IBM representative, or contact IBM HelpCenter (1-800-
772-2227 in the US) for more information.
1.2. System program update (Flash BIOS update)
----------------------------------------------
Before you install Windows 95, you are strongly recommended to get
the following version of ThinkPad System Program Service Diskette
and to update your flash BIOS. Otherwise, Windows 95 may not run
as explained in this document. You need to follow the instructions
provided by the system program service diskette very carefully to
update your flash BIOS program. Your system could be damaged by
incorrect operations during this system program update.
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
1. You need to update the flash BIOS prior to install Windows 95 on
your ThinkPad. In case you have already installed Windows 95 and
update the flash BIOS later, you may need to run "Add hardware
Wizard" of Windows 95 once again. If some problem still persists,
it is recommended to reinstall Windows 95 after the flash BIOS update.
2. The preview program version of Windows 95 beta and earlier
have a problem with IBM ThinkPad System Program Service Diskettes.
You MUST turn on the write-protect switch of your ThinkPad System
Service Diskette right after you create the diskette from its source
file. If you don't, Windows 95 could damage the diskette when you
write some data on it, or use "DIR" command against it. In this
case, the diskette no longer works as a system service diskette and
you need to recreate a diskette from the source diskette image.
The commercial release of Windows 95 doesn't have this defect.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

but only APM BIOS 1.0 is supported. No PnP BIOS support is
available on these systems.
- ThinkPad 750 Family
- ThinkPad 340 (Monochrome display system)
- ThinkPad 230Cs
3: IBM is not testing any other ThinkPad systems with Windows 95.
Windows 95 may run on those ThinkPad systems but IBM does not
plan to test Windows 95 on those systems.
1.3. Backing up your software and data
--------------------------------------
IBM recommends that you use a diskette backup program on your system
to create recovery diskettes of the preinstalled operating systems,
device drivers and applications. In addition, IBM recommends that
you back up all data files to disk before installing Windows 95.
1.4. Removing preinstalled software
-----------------------------------
<Removing OS/2 Warp>
If you purchase a SelectaSystem model and are using OS/2 Warp
version 3, Windows 95 cannot be installed with OS/2 Warp dual boot
configuration in the SelectaSystem. Therefore, if you wish to
install Windows 95, OS/2 Warp should be removed from your system
along with all the preinstalled OS/2 applications. "Uninstall OS/2"
icon is available for you in "OS/2 Warp" program group folder on
your Windows desktop screen of SelectaSystem configuration.
If you wish to continue using OS/2 Warp with Windows 95, you need
to use OS/2 Warp Boot Manager. For more information, refer to
Windows 95 SETUP.TXT file. It can be found on the Windows 95 disk 1
or the Windows 95 CD-ROM.
<Removing ThinkPad Welcome Screen>
If you plan to install, or have already installed Windows 95
over the following ThinkPad systems with factory preinstalled
software, you may encounter "Windows 95 Explorer Fault".
- ThinkPad 755C/Cs
- ThinkPad 360/355 Family
- ThinkPad 755CE/CSE/CD
- ThinkPad 340CSE
- ThinkPad 370C
- ThinkPad 701C/CS
If you have this problem, or to avoid this problem, please take the
following steps.
1. Edit your WIN.INI file located under C:\WINDOWS subdirectory.
For example, type "E C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI" and press ENTER from
DOS command prompt.
2. In [windows] section, find the "load=" statement. Remove
STRTSCR.EXE from the "load=" statement as follows.
<Example>
Your original WIN.INI
---------------------
[windows]
:
load=C:\SCREENS\STRTSCR.EXE C:\THINKPAD\FUELWIN.EXE
:
Remove STRTSCR.EXE
------------------
[windows]
:
load=C:\THINKPAD\FUELWIN.EXE
:
3. After you remove STRTSCR.EXE, you will no longer see the
ThinkPad Welcome screen. If you have already removed this
screen, nothing will be changed by removing STRTSCR.EXE.
1.5. Windows 95 setup disk for ThinkPad
---------------------------------------
To assist the Windows 95 installation, "Windows 95 setup disk" is
available through the support network mentioned in "Section 1.1 -
How to get the updated software from IBM". The Windows 95 setup
disk supports the following ThinkPad systems. Before using the
setup disk, you should review README first.
- ThinkPad 755C/Cs

2.1.2. Video device drivers
---------------------------
The video device driver for ThinkPad 755C/Cs systems is included
in Windows 95 and it is automatically installed by Windows 95
Setup program. You don't need ThinkPad Windows video device driver
any longer but still need to install ThinkPad VESA video driver.
The following procedure enables Windows 95 video device driver
functions.
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
The following procedure is NOT applicable on ThinkPad 755CE/CSE/CD/
CX/CV/CDV, 345C/CS and 760C/CD systems.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
<Enabling Windows 95 Video device driver>
1. Check your CONFIG.SYS file and look for the following statement.
:
DEVICE=C:\IBMVESA\VESA.EXE
:
(Note: The directory "C:\IBMVESA" could be different if you
have installed ThinkPad DOS video device driver into a
different subdirectory.)
If you find the statement, your system is already set up for
Windows 95 video device driver for ThinkPad. If not, go to
the next step.
2. Obtain ThinkPad Video feature diskette. (The latest version as
of 6/1/95 is 1.33) and insert it into the diskette drive.

2.1.3. ThinkPad Features Program
--------------------------------
The ThinkPad Features Program for Windows works on Windows 95. If
you install Windows 95 over a DOS/Windows 3.x system on which you
have already installed ThinkPad Features Program, it is migrated
into "Start Menu" automatically. Click "Start"; click "Programs";
click "ThinkPad"; then click "ThinkPad Features" to start the
program.
If you install Windows 95 on a blank hard disk or you haven't
installed ThinkPad Features Program, follow the instructions of
"ThinkPad Features Program - Installing for Windows" in the
ThinkPad User's Guide.
2.1.4. PCMCIA Device driver
---------------------------
Windows 95 comes with the integrated PCMCIA support. To use the
Windows 95 PCMCIA support functions, refer to the Windows 95
documentation or on-line help.
If you want to use ThinkPad PC Card Director (or EasyPlaying),
you still can use ThinkPad DOS PCMCIA device drivers. To
install ThinkPad PCMCIA device drivers, follow the instructions
of "Installing the PCMCIA drivers - Installing for DOS" in
the ThinkPad User's Guide.
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
The Windows 95 installation program doesn't enable its own 32bit
PCMCIA support automatically. If you already have a ThinkPad system
with ThinkPad DOS/Windows PCMCIA software and install Windows 95
on the system, the Windows 95 installation program keeps the ThinkPad
PCMCIA support software and you can keep using it. However, the
Windows 95 plug and play functions of its own PCMCIA support cannot
be used with ThinkPad PCMCIA support software. For more detail about
PCMCIA support software setup, refer to "Section 11.4. PCMCIA support
software setup.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
2.1.5. Audio Support Software
-----------------------------
The ThinkPad Audio Support Software for Windows works on Windows
95. If you install Windows 95 over a DOS/Windows 3.x system on
which you have already installed ThinkPad Audio Support Software,
it is migrated into "Start Menu" automatically. Click "Start";
click "Programs"; then click "Audio" to select the ThinkPad audio
program which you use.
If you install Windows 95 on a blank hard disk or you haven't
installed ThinkPad Features Program, follow the instructions of
"ThinkPad Features Program - Installing for Windows" in the
ThinkPad User's Guide. You also need to review the following
information.
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
Before installing ThinkPad Audio support software, you have to verify
that your ThinkPad has CONFIG.SYS file in the root directory of boot
drive. Also you might need to install Audio support software twice
to get it work correctly.
ThinkPad Audio Support Software setup makes several program icons to
use ThinkPad audio functions. The "Sound Recorder" icon, which works
fine under Windows 3.1, is not set up correctly under Windows 95
because the program name of Windows sound record utility is changed.
To setup "Sound Recorder" icon;
1. Verify that you have successfully installed or migrated ThinkPad
Audio Support Software onto Windows.
- Click "Start"; click "Programs"; then click "Audio"
- "Audio Control", "Media Player", "Sound Recorder" and "Read Me"
programs should be visible. If not, you need to reinstall
ThinkPad Audio Support Software.
2. Click "Start"; click "Settings"; then click "Taskbar..."
3. Click on "Start Menu Programs" tab.
4. Click "Advanced..." button.
5. Click "+" mark of "Programs" in the hierarchy window located left-
hand side; then click "Audio".
6. Highlight "Sound Recorder" in the content window located right-
hand side; click "File" menu; then click "Properties".
7. Click on "Shortcut" tab; and change "Target" program name from
"SOUNDREC.EXE" to "C:\WINDOWS\SNDREC32.EXE". (C:\WINDOWS could
be different depending on the subdirectory in which you installed
Windows 95.)
8. Click "OK"; now you can use "Sound Recorder" under Windows 95.
Note: This limitation will be fixed in the next release of ThinkPad
Audio feature program.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
2.2. Known limitations with Windows 95
--------------------------------------
o Token-Ring Credit Card Adapter problem
When you use IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card Adapter II (Part
Number 0933931) with Windows 95 PCMCIA support software, the
card may not be enabled correctly. Most 755C/Cs products don't
have this problem. IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card Adapter and
IBM Token-Ring Auto 16/4 Credit Adapter III (Part Number 04H6922)
don't have this problem. The updated driver will be provided
from Microsoft drivers library.
o Horizontal stripe appears with mouse pointer on external CRT
When you attach a high resolution external CRT monitor and switch
between a MS-DOS full screen session and Windows 95 desktop, you
may observe a horizontal stripe with the mouse pointer. If this
happens, take the following steps.
1. Click "My Computer"
2. Click "Control Panel"
3. Click "System"
4. Click on "Performance" tab
5. Click "Graphics..." button
6. Move the slider of "Hardware acceleration" left one notch
7. You will be prompted to restart the system
Upon next system boot, the horizontal stripe should disappear.
o "Unknown Hardware" problem
If you want to fix this problem, you first need to modify a Win95
information file in a hidden directory. If you are not familiar
with Windows 95 or you are a non-experienced PC / Windows
user, it's not recommended to do the following. Unexpected results
may occur if you cannot follow the instructions correctly.
1. Go to MS-DOS Prompt
2. Type "CD INF" and press Enter to go to the subdirectory
C:\WINDOWS\INF. (Note that C:\WINDOWS\INF is a hidden directory)
3. Back up NODRIVER.INF. Type "COPY NODRIVER.INF NODRIVER.BAK".
These *.INF files are very important for Windows 95 Device
Manager and you need to save the original one.
4. Edit NODRIVER.INF. Type "EDIT NODRIVER.INF" and press Enter.
5. Search [Manufacturer] section; Find the following statement.
%IBMMfg%=IBM
If you can find it, go to the next step. Otherwise, add this
statement in [Manufacturer] section.
6. Search [IBM] section; if you don't find it, add [IBM] section
somewhere between [Manufacturer] and [NODRIVER] section; find
the following statement.
%*IBM0040.DeviceDesc%=NODRIVER,*IBM0040
If you cannot find it, simply add this statement in [IBM]
section. Otherwise, go to the next step.
7. Search [String] section; find 'IBMMfg="IBM"' statement; after
this line, find the following statement.
*IBM0040.DeviceDesc="xxxxxx" (xxxxxx is some device name)
If you find it, change it to as follows.
*IBM0040.DeviceDesc="ThinkPad Audio Device"
8. Save the modified NODRIVER.INF file. And exit MS-DOS prompt.
Next, you need to remove "Unknown Device" (or "Mwave DSP") from
Device Manager. Then need to refresh the hardware structure.
9. Click "My Computer"
10. Click "Control Panel"
11. Click "System"
12. Click on "Device Manager" tab
13. Click "+" mark of "Other devices"; you see "Unknown Device"
(or "Mwave DSP processor").
14. Click on "Unknown Device" (or "Mwave DSP") and click "Remove"
button; click "OK" to confirm.
15. Click "Refresh" button; Windows 95 will restructure the device
tree in "Device Manager" and you now should see "ThinkPad Audio
Device" under "Other detected devices".
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
If you encounter any unexpected results by doing the above, you
might have failed to modify your NODRIVER.INF file correctly. You
should recover your original NODRIVER.INF from NODRIVER.BAK which
you've saved. Rename NODRIVER.BAK to NODRIVER.INF and do the above
steps again, if desired.

Restart Windows 95 and these system resources will be
automatically identified by Windows 95 during the Power up
sequence. Check these resources after powering up to
verify that there are no yellow or red indicators at this time
in the same manner as above. If there are no indicators then
Mwave and Windows 95 are installed correctly.
Note: If the Comm Port of the Mwave Modem has been changed
then your communications applications may have to be
manually changed so that the Comm Port of the modem and
the application match.
2. Audio problems
If you experience problems with playing audio wave files such as
System hangs or other Mwave related failures after the installation
of the Mwave driver for Windows 95, you may need to also install
Mwave audio patch for Windows 95. You may encounter the problem
with only files that have been recorded at a sampling rate 11.000 or
22.000 kHz. Most wave files are recorded at 11.025, 22.050, and
44.100 kHz and are not a problem. You may experience problems
with the MindPath Presentation F/X Pro, America Online and other
applications that have wave files with 11.000 or 22.000 kHz format.
If you experience this, then download the Mwave audio patch for
Windows 95 and follow the installation instructions. The patch is
in Package MW95WAV.EXE.

10.2. Known limitations with Windows 95
--------------------------------------
o Windows 95 logo screen becomes brown
Upon Windows 95 boot, its logo screen background becomes brown.
This is normal and everything works fine after Windows 95 desktop
screen appears.
o FaxWorks Voice problems
FaxWorks Voice, which is one of the preinstalled applications, has
the following problems under Windows 95.
- Telephone Icon is not displayed properly
The FaxWorks telephone icon is not displayed properly as it is
in Windows 3.x. When you start one of FaxWorks Voice functions
such as Call Center, the telephone icon is displayed over the
program name of title bar. Once you minimize Call Center, the
telephone icon disappears from the title bar but some garbage
might remain on the Windows 95 desktop screen. This cosmetic
problem doesn't affect the actual functions of FaxWorks Voice.
- When you close the windows of FaxWorks Voice fax viewing, the
system may encounter a problem and you might have to reboot
the system.
- If you have any problem related to sending/receiving fax by
FaxWorks Voice, check the following.
1. Click "My Computer"; click "Printers"; double click "FaxWorks
Printer Driver (FX-WORKS)".
2. Click on "Details" tab; verify that MWV is selected in "Print
to the following port". Windows 95 might show "MWV
(Unknown local port)" but it is normal.
<Note>---------------------------------------------------------------
Above limitations are expected to be fixed in the next version of
FaxWorks Voice program (revision 3.00g or later). The Package name
of FaxWorks Voice Version 3.00.g.058 is FWVMW058.EXE.

11.2. PCMCIA function limitations
--------------------------------
When you inserted a PC card into PCMCIA slots of ThinkPad, the
suspend function has the following limitations by design.
- When the system is power by AC, ThinkPad doesn't enter full
suspend and enters standby mode.
- When the system is power by battery, ThinkPad always enter
suspend mode regardless of the PC card status. You may lose
the connection if your PC card is a network card or modem.
The PCMCIA support software in Windows 95 has the following
limitations.
- It does not support the ring indicator of PCMCIA modem cards.
Therefore, you cannot use ring indications by PCMCIA modems even
if it's support by cards.
- It does not support PCMCIA harddisks power down, even if it's
supported by harddisks.
- It does not support the system boot from PCMCIA harddisks.
11.3. PCMCIA network adapter card compatibility in Dock II
----------------------------------------------------------
You may not be able to enable or get your PCMCIA network adapter
correctly when the card is inserted into the PCMCIA slot of IBM
Dock II docking station. If your card is working fine in the
ThinkPad internal PCMCIA slots, you need to contact IBM PC Company
HelpCenter and request the patch file, YPTF012.EXE.
11.4. PCMCIA support software setup
----------------------------------
The Windows 95 installation program doesn't enable its own 32bit
PCMCIA support software.
If you have a ThinkPad on which the ThinkPad DOS/Windows PCMCIA
support software is already installed and want to use it after
you install Windows 95 on the ThinkPad, you don't have to
perform any specific setup. The Windows 95 installation program
automatically migrates the installed ThinkPad PCMCIA support
software over to Windows 95 environment.

removed from your CONFIG.SYS.
DEVICE=C:\THINKPAD\IBMDSS01.SYS
DEVICE=C:\THINKPAD\IBMDOSCS.SYS
DEVICE=C:\THINKPAD\DICRMU01.SYS
DEVICE=C:\THINKPAD\$ICPMDOS.SYS
DEVICE=C:\THINKPAD\AUTODRV.SYS C:\THINKPAD\AUTODRV.INI
DEVICE=C:\THINKPAD\SRAMDRV2.SYS
Click "Next"; Windows 95 also lets you review AUTOEXEC.BAT
and SYSTEM.INI. There are no ThinkPad PCMCIA support software
setup included in AUTOEXEC.BAT and SYSTEM.INI.
7. After you review all the system files, click "Finish" to
complete the Windows 95 PCMCIA support setup.
If you want to use the ThinkPad PCMCIA support software after you
enabled the Windows 95 PCMCIA support software, you MUST disable
Windows 95 PCMCIA support again. Windows 95 disables its own PCMCIA
support as default. To make sure this;
1. Click "My Computer"
2. Click "Control Panel"
3. Click "System"
4. Click on "Device Manager" tab
5. Click "+" mark on "PCMCIA socket"
6. Verify that "PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller" is disabled.
(Red "X" sign should be visible on the PCIC icon, and "Device
Status" is "This device is disabled" when you double click
the PCIC icon.) If the PCMCIA controller is already enabled
("Device Status" is "This device is working properly".),
highlight "PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller" by clicking
the PCIC icon; click "Remove" button; then follow the instructions

docking functions under Windows but is not necessary under Windows
95 any longer. All the docking capability by this utility is
now provided by ThinkPad Plug-and-Play BIOS and Windows 95 Plug-and-
Play support. You don't have to install or use any specific programs
to enable ThinkPad docking functions under Windows 95. It is
recommended to remove the following statements from Windows INI files.
o WIN.INI file
[windows]
:
load=C:\THINKPAD\DOCKWIN.EXE <-remove this statement
:
o SYSTEM.INI file
:
[386Enh]

11.6. ThinkPad Dock II docking station
-------------------------------------
ThinkPad Dock II docking station supports docking and undocking
operations without system power off. You can dock and undock the
system when it is suspended (warm docking), or you can dock and
undock the system when it is powered on (hot docking). This feature
is available for 755, 701, 360 and 370 systems. When you use hot /
warm docking, you must disable the host adapter SCSI BIOS of Dock
