  89. If you should experience problems setting up PCMCIA Cards or ISA Adapters (in
  90. the docking station), please follow the procedures listed below:
  91.  
  92.  
  93. (1) Please ensure that your ThinkPad is using the latest BIOS release for that
  94. system.  Later BIOS releases correct problems that users have experienced with
  95. the earlier releases.  Refer to the ThinkPad BIOS section to determine if you
  96. need to update your system's BIOS.
  97.  
  98. (2) Make sure that your software drivers are at the correct release level and
  99. are setup properly.  Refer to the ThinkPad PCMCIA Drivers section to see if you
  100. need to update your system's PCMCIA device drivers.  If you are using Point
  101. Enablers, please ensure that they are at the latest release level.
  102.  
  103. (3) Determine if any upper memory conflicts exist between the areas claimed by
  104. ThinkPad BIOS, Card & Socket Services, Point Enablers, the SCSI Adapter found
  105. in IBM Docking Stations, and any ISA Adapters installed in the docking station.
  106. Refer to the ThinkPad Memory Map and the ThinkPad Dock I & Dock II Memory Map
  107. sections.
  108.  
  109.  The Device Driver DICRMU01.SYS /MA=C800-CFFF (DOS PCMCIA Resource Map Utility)
  110. sets the upper memory addresses used by Card & Socket Services.  The /MA
  111. parameter tells Card Services what locations in upper memory can be used by
  112. PCMCIA cards or Card Services, and must match or be a subset of an excluded
  113. memory range on the EMM386 line of CONFIG.SYS.
  114.  
  115. (4) Microsoft Windows can overwrite the upper memory address used by Card &
  116. Socket Services.  To prevent this, add an EmmExclude=XXXX-XXXX statement to the
  117. [386 Enh] section of SYSTEM.INI (Where XXXX-XXXX is the same as the memory
  118. region as used in the /MA parameter for the DICRMU01.SYS driver). If you are
  119. using point enablers, be sure to exclude any upper memory used by the enabler
  120. by adding an EmmExclude statement to SYSTEM.INI.
  121.  
  122. (5) Make sure that no interrupt conflicts exist between ThinkPad devices,
  123. PCMCIA Cards, the SCSI Adapter found in the IBM Docking Stations, and any ISA
  124. Adapters installed in the docking station.   Refer to the ThinkPad Interrupt
  125. Assignments section to view the default interrupt assignments.
  126.  
  127. Please note that the ThinkPad System Setup Utility allows you to view and
  128. change interrupt assignments for many internal devices.
  129.  
  130. The Resource Map Utility (DOS - DICRMU01.SYS, OS/2 - ICRMU01.SYS) can
  131. automatically detect many IRQs already in use, but may not detect all.  Try
  132. excluding the IRQ of the onboard SCSI and any ISA Adapters in the Docking
  133. Station by adding the /IX=xx parameter to the Resource Map Utility (where xx is
  134. the IRQ number to exclude).  Multiple IRQs may be specified by separating with
  135. a comma.
  136.  
  137. (6) Ensure that no DMA conflicts exist between internal ThinkPad devices and
  138. any ISA Adapters installed in the docking station.  Please refer to the
  139. ThinkPad DMA Assignments section.
  140.  
  141. (7) Some ISA Adapters in the IBM DOCK I and DOCK II may require the ISA Adapter
  142. Timing Fix.  Please download YPTF012.EXE from the IBM BBS.

  161. Troubleshooting IBM Thinkpad MWAVE Modem Problems
  162.  
  163. If you should experience problems with the MWAVE DSP Modem, please follow the
  164. procedures listed below:
  165.  
  166. (1) If you experience a NO DIALTONE Error, reseat the telephone DAA Module.
  167. Disconnect the phone line from the ThinkPad and leave the hatch door open.
  168. Lift open the keyboard.  Slide the blue switch to the left.  This unlocks the
  169. DAA Module for removal.  From the left side of the ThinkPad, pull the black DAA
  170. Module away from the ThinkPad.  Firmly press the DAA Module back into the
  171. ThinkPad to reseat it.  Lock the DAA Module in place by sliding the blue switch
  172. all the way to the right.
  173.  
  174. (2) Please ensure that your ThinkPad is using  IBM ThinkPad MWAVE software
  175. Version 2.0 (or later).  Please review the Drivers section of this document for
  176. the current MWAVE code.
  177.  
  178. (3) Review the communications settings for your modem software:
  179.  
  180.  To Set:      Select highest ranking available setting:
  181.  
  182.  Modem type   1. Mwave modem
  183.               2. Generic Hayes-type modem
  184.               3. User-defined modem
  185.               4. Hayes SmartModem 2400
  186.               5. Hayes modem
  187.               6. Hayes compatible modem
  188.               7. Other (Note: If you select a modem of type "Other," you
  189.                  must include the proper modem initialization string. For
  190.                  most applications, the initialization string "AT&F" will
  191.                  work. See the MWAVE Modem on-line help for more
  192.                  information.)
  193.  
  194.  Baud Rate    57,600 Kbps, or the maximum setting offered by your
  195.               communications software.
  196.  
  197.  COM Port     COM 2
  198.  
  199.  
  200. To determine if communications software configuration is a problem, test the
  201. modem using the Windows Terminal program (in the Accessories Folder).  Run
  202. Terminal.  Select COM2.  Select Settings, then Modem Commands and make sure
  203. that Hayes is selected, then select OK.  Next, type atdt at the command line
  204. and hit Enter.  If you receive a dialtone, then you probably have a software
  205. configuration problem with your specific modem software.  If you do not receive
  206. a dialtone, continue with next step.
  207.  
  208. (4) Double click on the ThinkPad Setup Icon.  The double click on the System
  209. Information Icon.  Review the IRQ settings to ensure that (a) the DSP device is
  210. active (default is IRQ10); (b) the modem device is active (default is IRQ3);
  211. and (c) no other devices conflict with the DSP and Modem IRQs.  Next, review
  212. the DMA settings to ensure that the DSP device is active (default DMA7) and
  213. that no other devices conflict with the DSP device.
  214.  
  215. (5) Within the ThinkPad Setup Icon or Folder, double click on the Serial Icon.
  216. Please ensure that Serial Ports A & B are disabled or do not conflict with the
  217. MWAVE Modem.
  218.  
  219. (6) Open MWAVE ThinkPad Icon or Folder.  Double click on the Modem icon.  This
  220. enables the MWAVE Modem.  This program can be minimized.  However, it must
  221. remain running while using the MWAVE Modem (please note that this item does not
  222. apply to MWAVE 2.0 for Windows or MWAVE 2.1 for Windoes 95).
  223.  
  224. (7) Lotus Notes users should download LOTMWAVE.EXE from the IBM BBS.  This file
  225. provides Lotus Notes with a MWAVE modem definition.
  226.  
  227. (8) Microsoft Mail users should download MSMMWAVE.EXE from the IBM BBS.  This
  228. file provides Microsoft Mail with a MWAVE modem definition.
  229.  
  230. (9) The MWAVE Device is initialized each time Microsoft Windows is started.
  231. This means that a communications session started in DOS would be terminated
  232. when Windows is started.  Users who need to start the MWAVE Modem in DOS and
  233. keep it running while starting Microsoft Windows should use MWAVE Version 1.1
  234. and download MWDOSMOD.EXE.  A fix for MWAVE Version 2 should be available
  235. shortly.

  241. Installing Windows 95 on the ThinkPad 755Ce, 755Cse, 755CD, 755CDV, 755CV, &
  242. 755CX
  243.  
  244. (1) For complete Windows 95 directions, please download TPWIN95.EXE from the
  245. IBM BBS.
  246.  
  247. (2) If your ThinkPad is still running the original IBM software preload,
  248. download WIN95SET.EXE as well.  This diskette will prepare an IBM ThinkPad
  249. loaded with the IBM software preload for Windows 95.  The diskette will check
  250. the BIOS level of the system, stop the ThinkPad Welcome Screen from being
  251. displayed automatically, and delete OS/2 WARP and any preinstalled OS/2
  252. applications.
  253.  
  254. (3) It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that you update your system BIOS to the latest
  255. BIOS release before installing Windows 95 on your system.  Early BIOS releases
  256. do not support Plu & Play or MWAVE under Windows 95.  Refer to the BIOS section
  257. for the latest BIOS level for you ThinkPad.
  258.  
  259. (4) Install Windows 95. On ThinkPad's with internal CD-ROM Drives, Windows 95
  260. comes with a generic ATAPI CD-ROM driver and it will work with the ThinkPad
  261. integrated CD-ROM.  To make sure that you are using Windows 95 generic ATAPI
  262. CD-ROM driver, remove the following driver from CONFIG.SYS: IBMTPCD.SYS.
  263.  
  264. (5) The ThinkPad Features Program for Windows works on Windows 95.  If you
  265. install Windows 95 on a blank hard disk or you haven't installed ThinkPad
  266. Features Program, follow the instructions of "ThinkPad Features Program -
  267. Installing for Windows" in the ThinkPad User's Guide.  Please ensure that you
  268. are at the latest levels (refer to Driver Levels section of this document).
  269.  
  270. (6) Windows 95 comes with the integrated PCMCIA support.  To use the Windows 95
  271. PCMCIA support functions, refer to the Windows 95 documentation or on-line
  272. help. Note: to use PCMCIA function, you must run the PC Card Wizard in Control
  273. Panel under My Computer.
  274.  
  275. If you want to use ThinkPad PC Card Director (or EasyPlaying), you can still
  276. use ThinkPad DOS PCMCIA device drivers.  Follow the instructions in the
  277. ThinkPad User's Guide for "Installing the PCMCIA drivers - Installing for DOS."
  278. Make sure that you use the latest PCMCIA drivers.
  279.  
  280. (7) To install MWAVE Modem and Audio support, obtain the latest MWAVE DOS and
  281. MWAVE Windows 95 Drivers from the IBM BBS.
  282.  
  283. (8) You can use ThinkPad Infrared device driver on Windows 95.  If you don't
  284. have ThinkPad Infrared device driver version 2.01, you may encounter some
  285. problems.  Refer to the Driver Levels section of this document.
  286.  
  287. (9) The ThinkPad 755CD and 755CDV provide Enhanced Video. You can use ThinkPad
  288. Enhanced video device driver on Windows 95.  If you don't have ThinkPad Utility
  289. diskette version 3.10 or later, you may encounter some problems when you change
  290. or setup enhanced video functions.
  291.  
  292. (10) If you are using an IBM PCMCIA Token-Ring Adapter, download TRCC1.EXE
  293. for an updated driver for Windows 95.
  294.  
  295. (11) Windows 95 treats the IBM Ethernet Credit Card Adapter II as a Plug & Play
  296. Adapter.  However, some older versions of this adapter do not support Plug &
  297. Play.  If you insert this adapter into a system running Windows 95, the system
  298. may lock until you remove the adapter.  To correctly configure this adapter for
  299. Windows 95, boot in Safe Mode, go into Device Manager, and manually configure
  300. the adpater for I/O 300, IRQ 9, Mem Address D400.

  321. Installing Windows NT 4.0 on the ThinkPad 755Ce, 755Cse, 755CD, 755CDV,
  322. 755CV, & 755CX
  323.  
  324. (1) Update your system BIOS to the latest BIOS release before installing Windows
  325. NT on your system.
  326.  
  327. (2) Download the latest ThinkPad Windows NT 4.0 Installation Instructions
  328. (TPWINT40.TXT) from the IBM BBS or Web site.  Also download the latest drivers
  329. required for your system (see Drivers for Windows NT section for the files to
  330. download).
  331.  
  332. (3) Install Windows NT on the ThinkPad.
  333.  
  334. (4) Windows NT 4.0 should automatically detect the ThinkPad 755Ce, 755Cse,
  335. 755CD, 755CDV, 755CV, and 755CX video controller and install a Western Digital
  336. 90C24A display driver.
  337.  
  338. (5) Install the ThinkPad Power Management driver.  Once you install the
  339. ThinkPad Power Management driver, Suspend/Resume and Power Management are
  340. supported under Windows NT.
  341.  
  342. (6) Install the Windows NT version ThinkPad Utilities program.  Using this
  343. program, you can change your hardware configuration, display the fuel gauge,
  344. and set the device stand-by timers (same as in the Windows 3.1 or Windows 95
  345. environments).  Logoff and log back on to enable the ThinkPad Utilities.
  346.  
  347. (7) Windows NT Audio & Modem Support is provided via MWAVE files from the IBM
  348. BBS.  Before installing MWAVE support, verify that the MWAVE DSP is enabled
  349. in the ThinkPad Features program.  Then, install MWAVE support for Windows NT
  350. (for MWAVE systems).
  351.  
  352. (8) Install Thinkpad infrared support using the file from the IBM BBS.
  353.  
  354. Currently, the following functions are not supported on Windows NT:
  355.  
  356. Enhanced video function (755CD, 755CDV) such as video overlay features
  357. are not supported.
  358.  
  359. Hibernation functions are not supported on NTFS partitions.
  360.  
  361. Windows NT supports the IBM Dock-I and Dock-II. However, hot/warm docking is
  362. not supported. To use the device in the Docking station, you must power off
  363. the system prior to docking/undocking.

  409. To view the BIOS Part Number, turn off the computer, press and hold F1, then
  410. turn on the computer. Hold F1 until the Easy-Setup menu appears.
  411. Select Config followed by SystemBoard.
  412.  
  413. To get the latest BIOS for the ThinkPad 755Ce, 755Cse, 755CD, 755CDV, 755CV, &
  414. 755CX download SYTPE144.EXE from the IBM BBS.

  418. Upgrading The ThinkPad Flash BIOS
  419.  
  420. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system
  421. program.
  422. - If your computer is attached to a ThinkPad Docking Station or a port
  423. replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  424.  
  425. (1) Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
  426. (2) Insert the System Program Service Diskette into the diskette drive and turn
  427. on the computer.
  428. (3) Select "Update system program" and follow the instructions on the screen.
  429.  
  430. Warning: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been
  431. completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN
  432. PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.
  433.  
  434. - After the update has been completed, do the following to make the changes
  435. effective.
  436.  
  437. (4) Remove the System Program Service Diskette from the diskette drive and turn
  438. off the computer.
  439. (5) Press and hold F1, then turn on the computer. Hold F1 until the Easy-Setup
  440. menu appears.
  441. (6) If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  442. (7) Select Config, then select Initialize.
  443. (8) Select OK to initialize system.
  444.  
  445. - Run the diagnostics to make sure that the computer runs with no errors:
  446.  
  447. (9) Turn off the computer, press and hold F1, then turn on the computer. Hold
  448. F1 until the Easy-Setup menu appears.
  449. (10) Select Test, then select Start to run all the basic tests.
  450. (11) Verify that OK appears for all of the devices tested.
  451. (12) Press Esc to exit Test and turn off the computer.

  987. memory.  SCSI BIOS can be disabled by rebooting the system while in the DOCK
  988. II, pressing Ctrl A at the prompt, selecting Configure/View Host Adapter
  989. Settings, and  changing Host Adapter BIOS to Disabled.  SCSI BIOS can also be
  990. disabled by removing the DOCK II's cover and changing the switch settings on
  991. the DIP switch block: Switch 1, 2, and 3 to ON. Do not change switch 4.

  997. (1) If you do not intend to use PCMCIA Cards, there is no reason to load Card &

  1043. Memory Management With PCMCIA Cards
  1044.  
  1045. (1) Many PCMCIA card manufacturers provide Point Enablers with their products.
  1046. Point Enablers are small programs that provide an interface directly to the
  1047. PCMCIA controller; therefore they must be written to support a particular type
  1048. of controller.
  1049.  
  1050. Point Enablers are relatively simple to configure, do not require Card & Socket
  1051. Services Drivers, consume no memory (they remove themselves from memory after
  1052. configuring the card), and provide the maximum DOS memory for your ThinkPad.
  1053. However, with Point Enablers, you must specify the slot number of the card
  1054. (therefore , the card must always be in a specific slot).  You must also
  1055. manually assign any upper memory blocks and IRQs used by that card.  In
  1056. addition, hot-plugging of the card is prohibited (in fact, it may damage the
  1057. card).
  1058.  
  1059. If Point Enablers are provided with the PCMCIA card(s) you are using, decide
  1060. whether to use the Point Enablers or Card & Socket Services.
  1061.  
  1062. (2) If you use Card & Socket Services, decide whether to use the Super Client
  1063. Driver (AUTODRV.SYS) or the drivers that are provided with your PCMCIA card(s).
  1064. The Super Client Driver automatically recognizes many popular PCMCIA cards
  1065. (including modems, 3270 cards, and SCSI adapters -- it does not recognize 5250
  1066. PCMCIA cards, SDLC cards, or LAN PCMCIA cards.).  However, the Super Client
  1067. Driver can consume more memory than do the drivers provided with the PCMCIA
  1068. card.

  1070. (3) Determine the amount and location of upper memory required by your PCMCIA
  1071. card(s), Docking Station, and ISA Adapter cards.  If possible, locate upper
  1072. memory required by all PCMCIA cards and ISA Adapters in one contiguous block.

  1074. that can be located anywhere in upper memory.

  1076. (4) Review the ThinkPad Memory Map for your system.  Exclude from EMM386.EXE's
  1077. usage the upper memory areas used by (a) the PCMCIA card(s), (b) Card & Socket
  1078. Services (4KB), (c) the upper memory area used by the SCSI Adapter in the
  1079. ThinkPad Docking Station (if applicable), and (d) the upper memory areas used
  1080. by any ISA adapters in the ThinkPad Docking Station.  Include any available
  1081. upper memory areas not excluded above.

  1084. /MA=XXXX-XXXX line in CONFIG.SYS.  Make the XXXX-XXXX range match the upper

  1304. prohibited (in fact, it will damage the card).

  1378. Using the MegaHertz PCMCIA Modem Point Enabler

  1380. (1) The MegaHertz PCMCIA Modem Point Enabler (called SETMHZ.EXE) does not
  1381. require Card & Socket Services.  In addition, it removes itself from memory
  1382. once it has configured the modem.  This can save up to 49KB (if you eliminate
  1383. Card & Socket Services).  However, with the MegaHertz Point Enabler, you must
  1384. specify the slot number of the card (therefore, the card must always be in a
  1385. specific slot).  In addition, hot-plugging of the card is prohibited (in fact,
  1386. it will physically damage the card).
  1387.  
  1388. (2) Obtain the latest Megahertz Point Enabler.  Versions before 3.1 do not
  1389. support the ThinkPad 755.  Latest version is 4.3.  Be sure to exclude a
  1390. 4KB block for the modem in upper memory.  If you are also using card
  1391. services, do not include the 4KB block in the /MA=XXXX-XXXX parameter of the
  1392. DICRMU01.SYS driver.

  1394. (3) The SETMHZ program is loaded via the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  Format of the
