  5. This is Beta 6 of Windows Eudora 4.3.2, a maintenance release of
  6. Eudora 4.3.
  7.  
  8. NOTE: This is beta software.  If you are not entirely comfortable 
  9. using beta software, DO NOT install this version on your PC.
  10.  
  11. We strongly recommend that BEFORE you install this software, you 
  12. make a backup copy of your existing Eudora folder and put that 
  13. copy in a separate area.
  14.  
  15. Do not be alarmed if there is a big jump in beta build numbers;
  16. gaps exists because we create frequent internal builds.
  17.  
  18. This is one of a series of beta releases of Eudora 4.3.2. As with
  19. any beta software, some features may not be fully implemented. If
  20. you find any problems with this software, please send us a bug
  21. report to our mailing list: eudora-bugs@qualcomm.com.

  40. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  41. ----------------------

  43. To use Eudora for Windows Version 4.3.x, you must have the 
  44. following:
  45.  
  46. -  IBM PC or compatible.
  47. -  Microsoft Windows 95/98 or Windows NT 4.0 or above.
  48.    (note:  it is recommended that you have the latest
  49.    service pack for each operating system)
  50. -  Winsock 1.1 API compliant networking package
  51. -  A mail account with an Internet Service Provider
  52. -  Access to your mail account via a modem or
  53.    Internet-style network connection.

  57. INSTALLATION
  58. ---------------
  59.  
  60. For our beta software, please do the following:
  61.  
  62. To install Eudora:
  63.  
  64. 1.   Exit any applications you are running.
  65.  
  66. 2.   Run the Setup program.
  67.  
  68.      If Setup reports that there isn't enough disk space, and you
  69.      think you have plenty (you should need no more than 15
  70.      megabytes free to install Eudora), remove everything you can
  71.      from your C:\Temp and/or C:\Windows\Temp directory, reboot,
  72.      and launch Setup once more.
  73.  
  74. 3.   Read the Welcome screen, then click the Next button.
  75.  
  76. 4.   Read the Software License Agreement, and if you agree to 
  77.      the terms, click Yes. You can save the Agreement by selecting 
  78.      its text, pressing Ctrl-C to copy it, and then pasting it into 
  79.      Notepad.
  80.  
  81. 5.   Qualcomm's PureVoice Voice Player/Recorder application is 
  82.      installed along with Eudora.
  83.  
  84. 6.   Specify a directory to install Eudora, then click Next.
  85.      
  86.      Note: It is strongly recommended that you install the beta into 
  87.      a clean empty directory.
  88.  
  89. 7.   Verify the settings, then click Next.
  90.  
  91. 8.   Eudora is installed in the destination directory.
  92.  
  93. 9.   It will ask if you want to place a shortcut to Eudora on your
  94.      desktop.
  95.  
  96. 10.  We recommend that you look at the Eudora README file which I 
  97.      guess you must be if you got this far.

  101. NEW FEATURES IN EUDORA 4.3.x

  104. The document WhatsNew.pdf in the Eudora directory summarizes the
  105. features that are new to Eudora 4.3.x.

  107. You'll need an application capable of reading PDF (Portable
  108. Document Format) files, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, in order to
  109. view that document. You can obtain an installer for Adobe Acrobat
  110. Reader 4.0 from Adobe Systems at <www.adobe.com>.

  117. CHANGES SINCE BETA 5

  120. Added new icons for partially fetched messages in the Server Status
  121. column of the mailbox view.
  122.  
  123. By default, the user is now warned before launching attachments with
  124. any of the following extensions:
  125. exe   com   bat   cmd   pif   htm   do*   xl*   reg   lnk   mdb   ppt
  126. hta   vbs   vbe   wsf   wsh   js    pl
  127.  
  128. Any extensions listed in the WarnLaunchExtensions setting now are
  129. added to the default list above, rather than replacing the default
  130. list. If you want to avoid being warned on certain extensions,
  131. use the WarnLaunchRemove setting. For example, if you're using
  132. Microsoft Office and you've turned off macros in Word and Excel so
  133. that you're no longer susceptible to macro viruses and Word and Excel
  134. documents, you could put this line in the [Settings] section of
  135. Eudora.ini:
  136. WarnLaunchRemove=do*|xl*
  137. The extensions are separated by vertical bar characters.
  138.  
  139. There's now a checkbox in Tools/Options/Automation for warning the
  140. user any time some other program or script asks Eudora to send an
  141. email message via its COM Automation interface. The warning is given
  142. by default. To turn it off, put WarnComAutoSend=0 in the [Settings]
  143. section of Eudora.ini, or paste this link:
  144. <x-Eudora-options:WarnComAutoSend=0>
  145. into a message and Alt-click on it.
  146.  
  147. You can now switch back to the default mail arrival sound in
  148. Tools/Options/Getting Attention.
  149.  
  150. Fixed a bug in the profile confirmation dialog that caused the text
  151. to be cut off at the bottom.
  152.  
  153. An <x-flowed> tag in a received message now gets written on a line by
  154. itself in the .mbx file. This fixes problems where things parsing by
  155. start of line - PGP clear signature verification - got confused.
  156.  
  157. Fixed a bug where Eudora wasn't displaying an error dialog if an SMTP
  158. server returned an error value in the 400's on an SMTP RCPT TO
  159. command.
  160.  
  161. Fixed a bug where, if the last line of an outgoing message was a long 
  162. one without any spaces (for example, a long URL), Eudora would wrap
  163. that line at the very last character.

  167. CHANGES IN BETA 5

  170. Fixed a bug where, if you first installed Internet Explorer, then
  171. installed Eudora and made it the default mailer, and finally
  172. installed Netscape, Eudora wouldn't automatically handle Netscape
  173. mailto: URLs.
  174.  
  175. Fixed a problem with dueling progress windows that could show up if
  176. you opened mailboxes during a mail import.
  177.  
  178. Fixed a bug where clicking Stop while importing Outlook Express mail
  179. would cause the progress window to stay visible until the next
  180. manual or automatic mail check.
  181.  
  182. Move To and Copy To are now grayed out in the context menu you get
  183. by right-clicking on an address book (as opposed to a nickname).
  184.  
  185. Names from messages that you discard will no longer get added to the
  186. list that shows up in auto-completion.
  187.  
  188. Fixed scrolling problems in the Help/Technical Support window.
  189.  
  190. The WarnLaunchExtensions setting no longer has to end with a vertical
  191. bar.

  193. Fixed a bug where selecting a new font in a composition window
  194. sometimes fails to take effect.

  196. We've improved the situation where, on some systems, the toolbar icons
  197. don't display correctly. We hope it's completely fixed now!
  198.  
  199. Fixed a Directory Services bug where port numbers with more than four
  200. digits couldn't be specified for Ph and Finger databases.
  201.  
  202. Added ".lnk" (Windows shortcuts) and ".reg" (registry files) to the
  203. list of attachment extensions that cause Eudora to put up a warning
  204. before launching the attachment. This warning only occurs if "Warn me
  205. when I launch a program from a message" is checked in
  206. Tools/Options/Extra Warnings; this is the default behavior.
  207.  
  208. If attachments can't be written during mail checks because the
  209. attachment directory doesn't exist, Eudora no longer says the
  210. problem is that it's out of disk space.
  211.  
  212. Made plaintext SMTP authentication work the server gives an empty
  213. challenge.
  214.  
  215. Made the confirmation dialog that you get after providing your
  216. profile information modeless, so that automatic mail checks will
  217. still occur while the dialog is displayed.
  218.  
  219. Opening the Find Messages window now uses far fewer resources than
  220. before if fewer than five search criteria are shown. If one criterion
  221. is shown, the Windows 95/98 resource meter now shows a drop of 4%
  222. rather than 19%.
  223.  
  224. Windows Address Book importing is now more robust.
  225.  
  226. Outgoing MAPI messages sent via MAPISendMail() now flow messages that
  227. use the format=flowed style (spaces at ends of lines to be flowed). 
  228.  
  229. Fixed a bug that could, under some circumstances, cause incoming
  230. messages to hang around indefinitely without getting displayed.
  231.  
  232. Fixed some problems where the progress window would cause Eudora to 
  233. come to the foreground during a mail check when it was not the
  234. frontmost application.

  236. Fixed a bug that caused certain PNG images (including ads) not to be
  237. displayed.
  238.  
  239. Fixed a bug where turning off Word Wrap was correctly not adding the 
  240. format=flowed parameter, but was incorrectly causing format=flowed
  241. processing to be done on the body of the message.

  243. Link History remind functionality is no longer provided after the user

  251. Worked around a bug in the PGP plug-in that caused it to fail to
  252. encrypt or sign messages in non-PGP/MIME mode. This has happened ever
  253. since we fixed a certain memory leak in Eudora 4.3.
  254.  
  255. Added support for importing mail and address books from Outlook 2000.
  256.  
  257. Added support for importing mail from Netscape 4.5 and above.
  258.  
  259. Fixed a bug that could cause a Netscape mail import to fail due to
  260. a misconstructed file name.
  261.  
  262. Fixed a crash that would occur if Outlook Express, Outlook 98, or
  263. Outlook 2000 was not the default client and you tried to import. 
  264.  
  265. Fixed bugs which caused some Outlook Express 5 address book imports
  266. to fail.

  268. Fixed a bug where certain attachments under certain conditions could
  269. use up all your remaining disk space.

  271. Put a check box in the New Mail and No New Mail message boxes that
  272. lets you stop those announcements. This is equivalent to unchecking

  294. Fixed a bug that could cause an ad to be displayed outside its proper
  295. date range.

  297. Fixed a bug that caused a warning to pop up upon saving, exploring,
  298. or deleting an attachment with executable content. (These options
  299. are in the context menu you get by right-clicking the attachment
  300. icon.)

  302. Improved the text that gets inserted in a partially downloaded message
  303. if its size exceeds the limit specified in Tools/Options/Checking
  304. Mail.
  305.  
  306. The middle drop-down menu in Find Messages now offers both
  307. case-sensitive and case-insensitive regular expression matching,
  308. making it consistent with Filters. Also changed "contains word" to
  309. "contains whole word" in that menu.
  310.  
  311. fixed a bug that could cause Edit/Insert Recipient to insert weird
  312. characters in the text.
  313.  
  314. The main window toolbar now responds immediately to changes in the
  315. system color.
  316.  
  317. Users will now be "nagged" to send information on their Eudora usage
  318. an average of only once every 100 months. Also, if the settings
  319. section of Eudora.ini contains "DontShowAudit=1", this request will
  320. never occur. Finally, the message containing this information now
  321. never gets queued until the user explicitly clicks Queue or Send. 
  322.  
  323. Fixed a bug related to From, To, etc. COM Automation properties for
  324. queued messages.
  325.  
  326. Fixed a bug where changing the mode from Paid to Sponsored would
  327. temporarily leave the wrong button enabled in the Help/Payment &
  328. Registration dialog.

  330. Outgoing MAPI messages sent via MAPISendMail now convert plain-text
  331. quoting (i.e. > characters) into excerpts. (This can be disabled by
  332. putting "MapiExcerptFixedText=0" in the [Settings] section of
  333. Eudora.ini.)

  335. Sped up the MAPIReadMail functionality for MAPI clients that use it.
  336.  
  337. Fixed a bug where recipients with same name and address given to 
  338. MAPISendMail by a MAPI client would create ugly addresses in Eudora
  339. (along the lines of foo@bar.com <foo@bar.com>).

  341. Fixed a bug where a MAPI client could get a corrupted copy of a
  342. message obtained via MAPIReadMail, if the lines of the message were
  343. delimited with just a line feed character rather than a carriage
  344. return plus a line feed.

  347. field specified by a MAPI client on a MAPISendMail call.

  465. NOTES CONCERNING EUDORA AND:
  466.       * APPLE QUICKTIME
  467.       * MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER

  470. Eudora's standard message viewer supports basic HTML, such as text
  471. formatting and inline images. Installing QuickTime adds support to the
  472. standard viewer for inline display of a wider range of image (picture)
  473. formats. Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE), version 4.0 or
  474. above, adds an additional message viewer (hereinafter, the Microsoft
  475. viewer) to Eudora that can accurately display just about any HTML
  476. message you might receive.
  477.  
  478. You can find installers for these applications on the Eudora web site
  479. at <http://eudora.qualcomm.com/download/other>.
  480.  
  481. * Why should I care about displaying HTML messages?
  482.  
  483. HTML messages (email messages that use HTML, the language of web
  484. pages) are becoming more and more common. The latest web browsers
  485. allow a web page to be sent as an HTML message. If someone sends you
  486. an HTML message that uses advanced formatting such as tables, then to
  487. see it as it was intended you need to tell Eudora to use the Microsoft
  488. viewer instead of its standard message viewer.
  489.  
  490. * If Eudora has two viewers, how will I tell it which one to use?
  491.  
  492. Just check or uncheck the "Use Microsoft's viewer" checkbox in the
  493. Viewing Mail panel of the Options dialog, under the Tools menu in
  494. Eudora. The checkbox is checked by default if IE 4.0 or higher is on
  495. your system. If IE 3.0 or higher is not on your system, the checkbox
  496. is dimmed and you can use only the standard viewer; you can, however,
  497. enhance it with QuickTime as described below.
  498.  
  499. * What's the impact of installing QuickTime?
  500.  
  501. It'll take about a minute and use 6 megabytes of disk space. It
  502. enhances the standard (non-Microsoft) viewer by allowing it to
  503. display images in a wider range of formats. It has no effect when
  504. "Use Microsoft's viewer" is selected.
  505.  
  506. * What's the impact of installing IE 4.0 or higher?
  507.  
  508. If you install IE 4.0 via the Eudora installer, it'll take up to 10
  509. minutes, depending on the speed of your computer, and consume about 35
  510. megabytes of disk space. It will not convert your desktop to the
  511. "active" state where single-clicking on an icon opens it, and it will
  512. not make IE 4.0 your default web browser unless your current default
  513. browser is an earlier version of IE. 
  514.  
  515. The specific viewing capabilities that you gain in Eudora are listed
  516. below.
  517.  
  518. * What if I already have Internet Explorer?
  519.  
  520. If you already have IE 4.0 or above on your system, Eudora will take
  521. advantage of it automatically, so there's no need to have the Eudora
  522. installer reinstall it.
  523.  
  524. If you already have IE 3.0 on your system, you have two choices:
  525.  
  526. 1. You can leave it alone, in which case Eudora will use IE 3.0 if you
  527.    choose "Use Microsoft's viewer" in Eudora's Options dialog.
  528.    However, this doesn't provide all the functionality you get with
  529.    the IE 4.0 viewer (or even the standard viewer) - see the details
  530.    below.
  531. 2. You can upgrade to IE 4.0 via the Eudora installer. This will
  532.    upgrade your IE 3.0 to version 4.0 (on Windows 95, this won't take
  533.    effect until after you reboot). You won't lose any functionality,
  534.    and all your IE settings and preferences will be preserved.
  535.  
  536. If you have aáversion of IE earlier than 3.0 on your system,
  537. installing IE 4.0 will not affect it. However, you must have IE 3.0 or
  538. above in order for the "Use Microsoft's viewer" option to take effect.
  539.  
  540. * What does Eudora's standard viewer support?
  541.

  577. If you're using IE 3.0, you can still edit received messages, and run 
  578. Eudora plug-ins on them, provided you first switch to the standard
  579. viewer by unchecking "Use Microsoft's viewer" in the Options dialog.
  580.  
  581. * What does inline image support mean?
  582.  
  583. This means that if there's a picture embedded in the middle of a
  584. message, it'll display that way. Otherwise, the picture will be an
  585. attachment and will display in a separate window when you click on it.
  586.  
  587.

  589. IF THE "SPEAK" FILTER ACTION IS GRAYED OUT
  590. --------------------------------------------
  591.  
  592. You have the option, when setting up a filter, to have Eudora audibly
  593. announce, or speak, the subject and/or the name of the sender whenever
  594. a message is filtered. (In the case of an outgoing filter, it will
  595. speak the name of the recipient rather than the sender.)
  596.  
  597. In order to use this feature, you need to have a sound card and sound
  598. card device driver that are compatible with the version of Windows
  599. you're running. You also need to install Microsoft's Speech
  600. Application Programming Interface (SAPI) and a SAPI-compliant
  601. text-to-speech engine.
  602.  
  603. If those components are not present on your computer, the Speak action
  604. will be grayed out in the Filters window. You can remedy this by
  605. installing SAPI and Microsoft's text-to-speech engine; installers for
  606. both are available on the web at
  607. <http://www.eudora.com/download/other>, under the heading "Installing
  608. Microsoft's Text-to-Speech Engine".

  615. Recent email viruses, such as the notorious "I Love You" and
  616. "Melissa" viruses, have heightened many people's awareness of the

  696. purposes, provided that you reproduce all copyright and 
  697. other proprietary notices that are on the original copy of

  699. (b) Distribution.  Qualcomm hereby grants you the 
  700. right to distribute unmodified complete copies of the 
  701. Software to any third party provided (i) that such third

  729. permission.  Unauthorized use or disclosure of such 
  730. information would cause irreparable harm and significant 
  731. injury to Qualcomm that would be difficult to ascertain; 
  732. accordingly you agree that Qualcomm shall have the right to 
  733. obtain injunctive or other equitable relief to enforce 
  734. obligations under this Agreement without limiting any other

  746. 6. NO WARRANTY. THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND

  749. the foregoing disclaimer may not apply to you.  This

  766. information and so notifying Qualcomm. Qualcomm may 
  767. terminate the Agreement at any time for any reason by so 
  768. notifying you; you must then promptly delete all copies of 
  769. the Software and related information. Sections 2 - 6 and 10 
  770. shall survive termination.

  772. 9. EXPORT.  You may not download or otherwise export or re-
  773. export the Software except in full compliance with all 
  774. applicable laws and regulations.

  776. 10. CONTRACTING PARTIES.  If the Software is installed on 
  777. computers owned by a corporation or other legal entity, then 
  778. this Agreement is formed by and between Qualcomm and such 
  779. entity. The individual executing this Agreement represents 
  780. and warrants to Qualcomm that they have the authority to 
  781. bind such entity to the terms and conditions of this 
  782. Agreement.

  784. 11. INDEMNITY. You agree to defend and indemnify QUALCOMM 
  785. Incorporated against all claims, losses, liabilities, 
  786. damages, costs and expenses, including attorney's fees,

  790. 12. GENERAL.  The Software is a "commercial item."  This 
  791. Agreement is governed and interpreted in accordance with the 
  792. laws of the State of California without giving effect to its

  795. expressly disclaimed.  Any claim arising out of or related 
  796. to this Agreement must be brought exclusively in a federal 
  797. or state court located in San Diego County, California and 
  798. you consent to the jurisdiction of such courts. If any 
  799. provision of this Agreement shall be invalid, the validity
