  66.    Prior to the summer of 1991, there was a single newsgroup for
  67.    discussing issues of interest to pet owners. This was rec.pets, and
  68.    this group still exists for those pets that don't have their own
  69.    newsgroups.
  70.    
  71.    Rec.pets.dogs (and rec.pets.cats) was formed in the summer of 1991.
  72.    Joe DiBenedetto proposed the split and collected the votes, which
  73.    proved more than enough for its official creation.
  74.    
  75.    In the late summer of 1994, another discussion on splitting
  76.    rec.pets.dogs itself started up, due to the hundreds of daily messages
  77.    on the group. This split was proposed by Cindy Tittle Moore, and
  78.    Ronald Dippold collected the overwhelmingly positive vote. The new
  79.    splinter groups were created on November 9th, and rec.pets.dogs
  80.    removed two months later.

  82.   Original Charter for RPD
  83.   
  84.    Rec.pets.dogs is a newsgroup devoted to domestic canine issues. This
  85.    group can be friendly and helpful. Flamewars are generally limited to
  86.    several topics: crating dogs, training by the Koheler method, docking
  87.    and cropping, animal rights activism, wolf hybrids and pit-bull (or
  88.    other breed) dog bans. New readers are advised against starting these
  89.    topics up on the newsgroup as long, protracted, and inflammatory
  90.    discussions often ensue. The facts pertaining to these controversial
  91.    topics are covered in the FAQ's. This is not to say that these topics
  92.    are forbidden from discussion on rec.pets.dogs, but that regular
  93.    readers would greatly appreciate it if you checked out what the FAQ
  94.    had to say on them to make sure you have something new to contribute.

  130.           competition, flyball, hunting, sledding, backpacking/camping

  132.           training for the particular activity, physical conditioning,
  133.           how to hook up with activities available in your area, etc.
  134.           Sportsmanlike conduct is expected; in particular, derogatory
  135.           comments about activities you don't care for are frowned upon.
  136.           Use of keywords in the subject line to clearly identify your
  137.           activity is encouraged.

  140.           This group is for the discussion of typical behavioral problems
  141.           with dogs. Examples include but are not limited to: digging,
  142.           barking, aggressive behavior, housetraining, crate training,
  143.           etc. Also appropriate is discussion of "why" dogs behave as
  144.           they do and how to work with that to eliminate some behaviors
  145.           and reinforce others.

  148.           This group is for extensive breed specific discussion. Topics
  149.           may include breed specific health problems, locating breeders
  150.           of particular breeds, discussing breed specific abilities and
  151.           characteristics, asking about what breeds make appropriate pets
  152.           under what circumstances. Clearly identifying the breed you are
  153.           discussing in the subject line is encouraged.

  156.           This group is for health and medical questions related to dogs.
  157.           This includes, but certainly is not limited to, questions on
  158.           hip dysplasia, epilepsy, eye problems, diabetes, bloat,
  159.           allergies and skin problems, etc. Hereditary and acquired
  160.           diseases may be discussed, as well as traumatic disorders.
  161.           Questions about nutrition and feeding are also appropriate
  162.           here. This newsgroup is not intended to replace veterinary care
  163.           in any way, but is to help inform the dog owner about canine
  164.           health.

  166.    rec.pets.dogs.info, moderated
  167.           This is a moderated group and only posts faqs and informational
  168.           files relevant to rec.pets.dogs.*. The moderator is Cindy
  169.           Tittle Moore (rpd-info@iname.com) Appropriate faqs that are
  170.           already cleared for posting to news.answers are automatically
  171.           eligible to be posted here. Others that are regularly posted
  172.           (and listed in "Complete List of RPD.* FAQ's") are also
  173.           eligible for posting here. No discussion is permitted on this
  174.           group. This group is intended to make the faqs and artictles
  175.           with useful information for RPD more visible and easier to
  176.           find, especially for newcomers.

  179.           This group is for miscellaneous questions that are not more
  180.           appropriate for one of the other groups. This includes chat,
  181.           humor, anything pertaining to canines not explicitly covered
  182.           elsewhere. This group replaces the original rec.pets.dogs
  183.           group.

  186.           This unmoderated newsgroup proposed as rec.pets.dogs.rescue
  187.           will be used for the discussion of all aspects of dog rescue.
  188.           Topics appropriate to this newsgroup will include, but are not

  191.           + General questions and answers on dog rescue.
  192.           + General announcements relative to various rescue groups.
  193.           + General discussion of methods to use in helping a rescue dog

  203.    Michael Mahler attempted a FAQ in 1991 that consisted of compiled but
  204.    unedited articles saved from the net. Due to time constraints, he gave
  205.    up the project, and I received copies of the articles that he had
  206.    saved and incorporated much of them in here from other readers. I have
  207.    heard of other attempts at FAQ's well, but no real details.
  208.    
  209.    The current suite of RPD FAQ's started out as eight articles,
  210.    patterned largely after the RPC FAQ's the author had just completed.
  211.    These were put out publicly in the summer of 1992, and have since
  212.    grown to over 20 FAQs and some 80 breed specific FAQ's. Many of the
  213.    breed FAQ's are written by volunteers familiar with or researching the
  214.    breed.

  219.    First and foremost, I would like to thank the posters of RPD.* over
  220.    the years. Many of them contributed substantial material for this FAQ.
  221.    A good number have pointed out errors and corrections, keeping the
  222.    FAQ's wonderfully up-to-date. Some contributed unknowingly, as I
  223.    lifted their posts directly from the newsgroup, obtained them from
  224.    summaries kept by other people, or lifted them out of mailing lists.
  225.    Without this body of knowledge and contribution, these FAQ's would not
  226.    exist. A complete list of the faqs may be found in the regularly
  227.    posted "Complete List of rec.pets.dogs.* FAQs" on rec.pets.dogs.info.

  230.    years as the numbers have swelled beyond counting or listing. But a
