INSTALLATION
Before you install the whole package on your harddisk please make a
BACKUP!
Please have a close look at all the documentation files in USR/DOC and
USR/MAN (disk 6, documentation).
We can't prepare all the stuff in a way that it will run on your system
without problems (we don't have the time to do so [if it would be
possible at all]). So be warned: It may take some time to get running
all or parts of this package.
We would appreciate every hint how to improve the documentation,
installation notes and the distribution. Please send your suggestions
(or bug reports or source diff files or documentation files or ...) to
the following address:
TOP Munich
c/o reccoware systems
Lochhauser Strasse 35a
D-8039 Puchheim
WEST GERMANY
Fax: ++49 89 80 29 67
Every other user of the TOP package will love you for your help
(besides the fact that we will love you for it :-)
IMPORTANT:
The often mentioned program "compress" is *NOT* Microware's "compress"
utility. We supply the 16bit UNIX (tm) "compress" on the first disk
(programs 1). The "tar" program is also located on disk 1.
Some notes on tar:
tar tf <tar-file>
list the contents of a tar file.
tar xf <file>
extracts the file <file>. Please not that you mustn't enter a hyphen
('-') before the options.
<file> can be the standard input, so write a hyphen for that parameter:
compress -dc <file.t.Z ! tar xf -
In some README-files I've written for the pipe symbol the bar ('|')
instead of the exclamation mark ('!'). The bar is the pipe symbol when
using the new bourne shell "sh".
tar cf <file> {<files or directory>}
creates a tar file named <file>. <file> can be a '-', the output
is then redirected to standard output.
The 'v' option may be used to generate a verbose output. Don't use 'v'
when creating a tar file ('c') on standard output ('-').
DISK PROBLEMS:
We duplicate the disks with a fast copy program (OS-9's "backup" takes
too much time!). So it can happen that you (ehh, your computer, of
course) can't read a disk (let's hope you can read this one!) Please
send the new disk(s) back to us, with an addressed return envelope and
enough international return coupons. Please don't forget to note what
disks you want.
