  6.  I've been religiously listening to and taping the 
  7.  "Grateful Dead Hour" ("GDH") since 1988 and the show 
  8.  has meant a great deal to me as a tape collector, mainly 
  9.  because the soundboard tapes from recent shows can be so
  10.  hard to find!  In fact, other than 3/24 and 9/23, I haven't
  11.  seen any other complete 1994 soundboards in wide circulation.
  12.  I'm sure there are others, but they aren't easy to find!
  13.  In spite of my preference for older shows, I'm always
  14.  happy to get the GDH nuggets from recent shows.  It was
  15.  especially great to get 6 songs from the 9/24/94 Phil & Friends
  16.  benefit in Berkeley!  This was the first acoustic set for
  17.  Phil, Bobby and Jerry since 1980 (I think)!  It seems we can
  18.  always count on David to bring us both the historically important
  19.  and rare performances that are so crucial to a good tape collection.

  21.  I jumped at the chance to review the GDH's from 1994 because I thought
  22.  it would be interesting to throw a little "deadbase" analysis at
  23.  the beast, just to see what surfaces.  I'm truly grateful for all
  24.  the hours of live Grateful Dead that the "Gansito" has so graciously
  25.  provided.  So David, if the following words sound overly critical,
  26.  it's only because I can never get enough!

  28.  The majority of the Grateful Dead Hours from 1994 have featured
  29.  the concerts from 1994.  I didn't go to the painful extreme of
  30.  adding up all the segment timings to see if the 1994 concerts
  31.  were really covered at 50%, but the other statistics seem to
  32.  support this conclusion.  My reaction is one of disappointment, really.
  33.  Mainly because I can easily get an audience copy of any of the 1994
  34.  shows, and really prefer the older music anyway.  On the other hand,
  35.  there were some incredible shows from the 70's covered on the GDH
  36.  in 1994, including 9/19-20/70, 12/14/71, 3/31/73, 4/22/77,
  37.  and 5/18/77.  And I'm always happy to get an uncut version of Lazy
  38.  Lightning>Supplication!
  39.  
  40.  Analyzing the "number of times songs were played on GDH #276-326"
  41.  gives us a good indication that some care has been taken to
  42.  avoid a large amount of overplay for any given songs. Although, in
  43.  all honesty, I wouldn't complain about hearing more than a single
  44.  Scarlet -> Fire, or Weather Report Suite!  On the other hand,
  45.  it doesn't bother me in the least to hear six versions of Dark Star,
  46.  or even (at the risk of sounding blase) seven versions of
  47.  Playin' in the Band!

  49.  All things considered, I'll continue stay up until 1:00 a.m. on
  50.  Monday mornings to record the GDH in my usual fashion.
  51.  I've become a little concerned about my obsession when, after taping
  52.  the Grateful Dead from the taper section at the L.A. Sports arena
  53.  on Sunday, 12/18/94, I returned home to find that my timer was
  54.  successful at turning on the DAT machine to record the GDH in my
  55.  absence! <whew> Therapy anyone?
