Fixing a system that won't boot
Sometimes, the first step in troubleshooting is to get a stalled
computer started again. If the system freezes at start up (especially
after it displays the Qualitas MAX copyright message), the tips in
this document can help. The goal of these techniques is a computer
that boots properly. When you're able to boot your system, the next
step is to isolate the problem that caused the system to fail.
ALT key
After installing Qualitas MAX, if your system locks up at the
copyright message during system startup, or while running Maximize,
you can bypass Qualitas MAX by resetting your system (you may need to
power off). Then hold down the Alt key until the boot sequence stops
and you see a message that says that Qualitas MAX is not installed.
(If you press the Alt key too early, it may cause the system to report
a keyboard error. If this happens, release the Alt key, press F1 or
Escape as directed, then hold down the Alt key again.) Press a key as
directed to continue. Your system proceeds with the boot sequence.
Qualitas MAX is not loaded and all subsequent resident software loads
into low DOS memory. You may ignore the resulting error messages.
F8 key
If you're using DOS 6 or later, DOS provides single-line loading of
configuration files at boot time through the use of the F8 key. Begin
by resetting your system. As soon as you see the line that says
"Loading MS-DOS" (or "Loading Windows 95"), press the F8 key to get a
line-by-line confirmation for each program you load. Reply No to the
device line that loads 386MAX.SYS and respond Yes to other resident
programs.
Premaxim.bat file
The PREMAXIM.BAT file ships with Qualitas MAX. It restores the last
active configuration prior to the last pass of Maximize. If your
previous installation of Qualitas MAX ran without conflicts, run
PREMAXIM from your QMAX directory, then reboot your system to restore
the files to the working configuration.
Preinst.bat file
The PREINST.BAT file ships with Qualitas MAX. It restores your
computer's configuration to what it was before Qualitas MAX was
installed (unless you've installed Qualitas MAX a number of times).
Qualitas MAX files remain on the hard drive, but don't do anything.
The PREINST batch file is useful if you encounter problems the first
time you install Qualitas MAX and you want to restore your original
files. If you've installed any additional resident software since
last installing Qualitas MAX, use STRIPMGR.EXE if you need to remove
Qualitas MAX from your system.
Stripmgr.exe file
STRIPMGR.EXE removes memory managers, including Qualitas MAX, and
their associated programs. It looks for these programs in CONFIG.SYS,
AUTOEXEC.BAT, and any batch files called during system startup. For
more details, see the full discussion of STRIPMGR in the on- line
HELP. The option to strip memory management is included with Qualitas
Toolbox on the Uninstall tab.
When the system is bootable, try to isolate the cause of the problem
by following the directions in the Troubleshooting section of the
on-line HELP.
