Partitioning a hard drive allows you to divide your hard drive into several sections called partitions. These partitions can be used by the ProDOS and A/UX operating systems as well as the Macintosh operating system. For more information about ProDOS and A/UX, select that topic from the list to the left. Only Macintosh partitions will appear on the desktop.
Smaller partitions are faster, because the drive has a smaller area to cover to locate your files when working within a partition than it does when dealing with the entire drive. To determining the optimal sizes for your partitions you must balance the convenience of large partitions against the speed of small ones.
Partitions can also be protected with a password and used to hold sensitive information. A partition with a password cannot be accessed without the correct password. For more information, select the “password” topic from the list on the left.
If you want to create partitions on a drive, it must first be formatted or initialized as a “partitioned” drive. Once this process is complete, you must create the partitions.
