How To Play The HURRY! Adventure
--------------------------------
THE COMMANDS AND VOCABULARY:
The HURRY! Adventure Game understands a wide variety of commands.
However, it has only a limited vocabulary -- so it can get confused.
If you give it a word that it doesn't understand, it will tell you what
word it doesn't know. Try entering your command again using a different
word in place of the one the game objected to.
Your commands should generally be in the format:
<verb> <(multiple) noun phrase(s)> <preposition> <noun phrase/object>
Some (hypothetical) examples of valid commands:

Compound commands can be created by connecting single commands (like
those above) with "AND", "THEN" or the punctuation symbols "," or ";" to
connect two or more separate commands. However, "end-of-sentence"
punctuation symbols like ".", "!" and "?" should not be used. Below are
a few examples of valid compound commands:
TURN THE DOORKNOB THEN ENTER THE CAVE
CLIMB DOWN THE LADDER THEN SOUTH, WEST AND NORTHWEST
GET THE CLOAK AND THEN EXAMINE IT; READ THE LABEL
DROP THE FOOD AND THE BOTTLE THEN UNLOCK THE DOOR AND THEN LEAVE
GET THE TORCH, LIGHT IT WITH THE WOODEN MATCHES THEN EXAMINE IT
If the game understands all of the words in your command, but still
seems confused by the command -- then try to say the same thing using
fewer words and a simpler sentence. When in doubt, simplify your
input commands as much as possible. This also saves typing effort.
SPECIAL COMMANDS:
The game uses a number of special commands for various "housekeeping"
chores. These are all pretty standard for most adventure games,
specifically:
HELP May (or may not) give you a hint.
SCORE Will summarize your progress, so far.
INVENTORY Will display a list of the items you are carrying, and
those items you are wearing.
BRIEF Will cause location descriptions to be brief.
VERBOSE Will cause location descriptions to be verbose.
LOOK Will give you a full (verbose) description of
your current location.
LIST EXITS Will list the obvious (visible) exits from your current
location. There may be other ways to exit the location
-- but they may not be obvious.
OOPS Will allow you to edit (using the cursor keys, and the
delete, insert and backspace keys) your previous
input command. For example, if you enter THORW ROPE by
mistake, OOPS will enable you to edit this command and
correct it to THROW ROPE.
SAVE Will save the current game status on disk.
RESTORE Will restore a previously saved game from disk.
SCRIPT Causes output to go to both the screen and a printer
(using the LP1 port).
UNSCRIPT Causes output to go to the screen (only).
SOUND ON/OFF SOUND OFF turns the sound off and SOUND ON turns it on.
VIEW Will allow you to view the various illustrations (if
any) available at any location. For example, VIEW
SCENE will show a picture of the current location,
VIEW OGRE will show a picture to the ogre, etc.
NOTIFY Will cause the game to notify the player whenever the
player's score changes -- either up or down.
QUIT Quits the current game session. Always exit using QUIT
-- so the game can erase some temporary data files and
save disk space!
FUNCTION AND ALT-CURSOR KEYS:
The combination of the ALT key and the cursor keys have all been
programmed to create an input command corresponding to their respective
movement or compass directions, i.e., the ALT key and the up-arrow key
causes a NORTH command to be generated, the ALT key and the home key
causes a NORTHWEST command to be generated, etc.
Similarly, the function keys have been predefined to stand for several
of the most frequently used commands. Further, by giving the command
DEFINE, you may re-define any of the function keys to give any command
you wish. For example, in this game you might find it useful to
re-define one of the function keys to give the command KILL ORC WITH AXE
or GIVE CANDY TO BABY.
Hitting the '?' key (during the game) will display a diagram of keys and
their current definitions.
"LOOK-AND-FEEL" OPTIONS:
This particular game uses a special version of the AGT (Adventure Game
Toolkit) called the "Master's Edition" which allows the user to
customize the manner in which the game's general interface is defined
and to specify the game's overall "look-and-feel." The user may define
color schemes, status line options, command input method, size and
"layout" of the screen, etc. Once the player has a set of
"look-and-feel" options he or she likes, these options may be saved as
the standard defaults for this game and any other AGT game the user
plays.
One of the options available is a unique "menu-driven" input option that
allows the player to enter game commands by selecting words from a menu.
This option is particularly helpful for players who are often frustrated
by their inability to figure out an adventure game's vocabulary -- since
the menu always displays a list of "feasible" (though not always "smart"
or even appropriate) commands from which the player may make a
selection.
The "look-and-feel" options are accessed by hitting the ESC key during
the game (i.e., not now).

INTRODUCTION
In this game, you play the role of Buzz Crusher, the Chief-of-Police of
Midvale, Ohio. Last night, two very valuable paintings were stolen from the
Midvale Art Museum. The stolen paintings were works by Wyeth and Renoir.
When you studied the FBI's computerized crime records to see if similar crimes
had been perpetrated elsewhere recently, you discovered that a total of four
other art thefts had been done in four separate cities during the last four
weeks. The first theft was a Picasso painting in Washington DC, the second
theft was a Seurat painting in Baltimore, the third was a rare Egyptian
tapestry in Philadelphia, and the fourth was a Van Gogh painting in
Pittsburgh. These cities stretch from Washington to Midvale in a pattern
that suggests the thief is moving slowly across the country.
The next morning, over your first cup of coffee at your kitchen table, you are
still puzzling of the pattern of the thefts when you happen to glance down at
today's Midvale Gazette. A banner headline from a full page ad jumps out at
you:
"Direct From Smash Engagements In Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia
and Pittsburgh ....
The Great Florian's Traveling Circus and Flourishing Florilegium of
Flamboyant Wonders ....
Today is the last day .... at the county fair grounds ...."
A visit to the circus is in order -- and there is no time to waste. You
decide that you don't need your uniform or your gun, but your handcuffs will
come in handy. You throw on some old clothes, pin your badge to your shirt,
grab a reference book from your bookcase, whistle for your faithful dog Rex
and drive to the fair grounds south of town.

The book is filled with unusual words that circus people use and their
definitions.

You glance through the book and notice the following words...
ANNIE OAKLEY--A ticket of admittance. When Annie Oakley was traveling with
Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show she use to amaze the crowds by shooting holes in
cards at great distances. These cards look just like tickets that have had
holes punched in them -- hence the name for a ticket is an Annie Oakley.
BACK DOOR--The opening through which the performers enter and exit the Big
Top. Normally, closed to the public.
BACK YARD--The area behind the Big Top where the performers dressing rooms
and living quarters are located.
BALLYHOO--Can be either a noun or a verb. As a verb it means to give a
sales pitch, usually exaggerated. As a noun, it means the pitch being given
or alternatively advertising, like posters advertising the circus is coming to
town.
BARKERS--The person extolling the pleasures and excitement awaiting the
customer inside -- if he or she just buys a ticket, i.e., the person doing the
ballyhoo. Circus people normally call these people talkers or openers, but
seldom barkers.
BLUES--The cheap seats at both ends of the Big Top where you can only get a
good view of one of the three rings. The tickets for these cheaper seats are
normally blue in color and the seats themselves are often painted blue.
BULLS--The elephants. Circus elephants are always female, but are called
bulls none-the-less.
CARNY--Someone who works the booths in the midways such as the ring toss,
shooting gallery, mitt camp, pink lemonade and hot-dog stands, etc.
CLOWN ALLEY--A dressing tent or trailer reserved exclusively for the clowns.
COOCH DANCER--A dancer in the "Hoochee-Coochee" show (for adult men only).
FIRST OF MAY--A novice performer who is new to circus life and ways.
FRONT DOOR--The opening through which the public enters and exits the Big
Top, i.e., the main entrance.
GAFF--A secret device that allows the operator of a carnival game to control
if the player wins or loses.
GEEK--An unskilled circus or sideshow performer doing a job that doesn't
require a lot of finesse, such as pretending to be Wild Man from the Darkest
Amazon and biting the heads off chickens to horrify the crowds.
GRIFT--Illegal activities like gambling or games of chance that are rigged.

MITT CAMP--The palm reader's or fortune-teller's booth.
PICTURE GALLERY--A tattooed man or woman in the sideshow.
SIDE-WALLING--Crawling under the canvas side-walls of the Big Top to sneak
into the show.
SUCKER--A circus-goer. P. T. Barnum said that there was "A sucker born
every minute." Also, commonly called a "chump."
ROUSTABOUT--A common laborer who does things like getting the Big Top set
up or carrying water to the animals.
RUBBER MAN--Someone who sells balloons.
TEN-IN-ONE--The sideshow where one ticket buys the customer entrance to ten
(or more) exhibits or shows.
TOPS--Circus people always call the various tents "Tops" with the main show
tent being called the "Big Top." Even small tents are called "Tops" -- never
tents.
WHITE WAGON--The circus main office, normally the office and living quarters
of the circus owner.
WIRE--A pickpocket -- also called a "tool" or "hook." The wire works with a
"stall" or "push-and-shover" accomplice who distracts the marks' attention
while the wire gets the "okus" or "poke" (wallet, money, etc.)

from firms like Infocom. Versions of the "Classic Edition" are available for
IBM, Macintosh, Atari ST and Amiga computers and games created on any of these
computers can be re-compiled and played on any of the other computers. The
Classic Edition is still supported and available from Softworks as Shareware
for only $20 (or $40 including a 223 page printed manual with lots and lots of
detailed examples).
The "Master's Edition" contains all the features and capabilities of the
"Classic Edition" plus a whole lot more. It is totally compatible with the
Classic Edition and games originally developed for the Classic Edition can be
easily converted to and used with the Master's Edition. The Master's Edition
is available only for IBM (or compatible) computers. The Master's Edition is
aimed at the more sophisticated and experienced programmer/game designer. The

just inches away from their faces.
The sword swallower then proceeds to slowly slide the sword down his throat
about a foot. You can actually see it slide down his throat, because sections
of his throat bulge out as the sword pass through them. Then just as
carefully and slowly, he draws the sword back out.
He then holds the sword out in front of himself and smiles menacingly.
