INSTRUCTIONS:
THE GAMES KNOWN AS PATIENCE OR SOLITAIRE ARE AMONG THE OLDEST KNOWN PASTIMES
WITH CARDS. TOMMY'S TOYS IMPLEMENTS THE FORMS AS GIVEN IN "THE COMPLETE BOOK
OF SOLITAIRE AND PATIENCE GAMES", BY ALBERT MOREHEAD AND GEOFFREY MOTT-SMITH
(GROSSET & DUNLAP, 1949).
THIS PROGRAM IMPLEMENTS THE FOLLOWING 4 PATIENCE GAMES:

NOTE: THESE ODDS ARE FOR REAL GOOD PLAYERS AND ARE AVERAGES FOR A WHOLE LOT OF
GAMES; YOU ALWAYS GET HOT AND COLD STREAKS.
THE COMPUTER WILL PLAY WHILE YOU WATCH, OR YOU CAN PLAY MANUALLY.
THE DECK:
THE DECK CONSISTS OF 52 CARDS. IT IS USUALLY DISPLAYED IN THE LOWER RIGHT HAND
CORNER OF THE SCREEN.
THE SHUFFLE:
TO MAKE IT EASIER TO WIN, WE ALWAYS START OUT WITH A NEW (ORDERED) DECK, THEN
SHUFFLE IT EXACTLY 3 TIMES AND CUT IT, WITH AT LEAST 5 CARDS IN EACH PACKET.
THIS INSURES THAT THERE ARE PLENTY OF SEQUENTIAL RUNS IN THE DECK.
FOR THE HIGH ROLLERS, WE PROVIDE THE OPTION TO START WITH A COMPLETELY RANDOM
ORDER INSTEAD (ANSWER NO TO THE 'NEW DECK EACH TIME' QUESTION).
RULES:
1. BETSY ROSS (QUADRUPLE ALLIANCE). TO PLAY BETSY ROSS, YOU PUT ANY ACE,
DEUCE, TREY, AND FOUR IN A ROW (SHOWN ON TOP OF THE SCREEN); THEN PUT
ANY 2, 4, 6, AND 8 IN A SECOND ROW (THE 4 FOUNDATIONS). THE 4 FOUNDATION
PILES ARE THEN BUILT UP IN INCREMENTS OF 1 FOR THE FIRST PILE, 2 FOR THE
SECOND PILE, ETC.:

4,6,8,10,Q,A,3,5,7,9,J,K
6,9,Q,2,5,8,J,A,4,7,10,K
8,Q,3,7,J,2,6,10,A,5,9,K
THE TOP ROW HAS NO FUNCTION EXCEPT TO REMIND YOU OF THE ARITHMETIC
INCREMENT FOR THE PILE IN THE SECOND ROW.
YOU THEN TURN UP CARDS FROM THE DECK ONE AT A TIME, PUTTING EACH EITHER
ON A FOUNDATION OR ON A SINGLE WASTEPILE, WHICH MAY BE LEFT TURNED UP
FOR INSPECTION. THE TOP OF THE WASTEPILE (LAST CARD DISCARDED) MAY ALSO
BE PLAYED AT ANY TIME.
IN THE STANDARD GAME, TWO REDEALS (3 PASSES THROUGH DECK) ARE ALLOWED;
BUT YOU ARE GIVEN THE OPTION OF SPECIFYING MORE OR LESS.
NOTE: IN MANUAL MODE, YOU ARE PROMPTED FOR YOUR COMMAND:
TO PUT THE DECK CARD ON FOUNDATION #I (1..4), JUST HIT THE "1", "2",
"3", OR "4" KEYS ON THE TOP ROW OF THE KEYBOARD.
TO PUT THE CARD ON THE WASTEPILE, HIT THE "N" KEY, THE "P" KEY, THE
<ENTER> KEY, OR THE SPACE BAR.
TO PUT THE TOP WASTEPILE CARD ON FOUNDATION #I, JUST TYPE W1, W2,
ETC.
TO QUIT (GIVE UP), TYPE "X" (THEN HIT SPACE BAR OR <ENTER> KEY TO
PROCEED TO NEXT GAME).
YOUR SCORE IS THE NUMBER OF CARDS PUT ON THE FOUNDATIONS. THE CHANCE
OF WINNING (GETTING A PERFECT SCORE OF 48) IS 1 IN 8 GAMES (IF YOU ARE A
GOOD PLAYER; OF COURSE YOU ALWAYS HAVE HOT AND COLD STREAKS).
WHEN PLAYING, IT IS VITAL TO AVOID REVERSED SEQUENCES IN THE WASTEPILE,
FOR EXAMPLE, 9-10-8 (REGARDLESS OF INTERVENING CARDS) IS A REVERSED
SEQUENCE FOR FOUNDATION 1, 2-6-4 IS A REVERSED SEQUENCE FOR FOUNDATION 2,
ETC. HENCE, ONE SHOULD SELECT ON THE FIRST REDEAL ONLY THOSE CARDS
WHICH, WHEN REMOVED, LEAVE THE REMAINING CARDS IN CORRECT SEQUENCE
FOR THE FOUNDATIONS TO WHICH THEY ARE TO BE PLAYED ON THE SECOND REDEAL.

2. CORNER CARD (THE FOUR SEASONS). TO PLAY CORNER CARD, YOU START BY
DEALING OUT 5 CARDS IN THE FORM OF A CROSS; THESE ARE THE TABLEAU PILES.
YOU THEN DEAL OUT 1 CARD AND PUT IT IN ONE OF THE FOUR CORNERS OF THE
CROSS DEPENDING ON ITS SUIT. THIS IS THE FOUNDATION CARD: WHENEVER A
CARD OF THE SAME RANK AS THE FOUNDATION CARD IS FOUND ON TOP OF A
TABLEAU PILE, THE TALON, OR THE DECK, IT IS PLACED ON ITS OWN CORNER
TO START A NEW FOUNDATION PILE.
YOU THEN ATTEMPT TO BUILD UP THE FOUNDATION PILES IN SUIT AND SEQUENCE,
WITH 'CIRCULAR' RANK (AN ACE CAN BE PLAYED ON A KING). YOU CAN PLAY
A CARD FROM THE TOP OF A TABLEAU PILE, THE TALON, OR THE DECK.
A CARD FROM THE HAND (TOP OF THE DECK), THE TALON, OR ANOTHER TABLEAU PILE
MAY BE PLACED ON A TABLEAU PILE IF IT IS OF THE OPPOSITE COLOR AND HAS A
RANK ONE LESS THAN THE TABLEAU PILE'S.
IF THE CARD DRAWN FROM THE TOP OF THE DECK CANNOT BE PLACED ANYWHERE ELSE,
IT IS PLACED ON TOP OF THE TALON.
EMPTY SPACES IN THE CROSS CAN BE FILLED FROM THE TALON, THE HAND, OR THE
TABLEAU. (NOTE: SOME PURISTS PROHIBIT MOVING A CARD FROM THE TABLEAU
ONTO AN EMPTY TABLEAU PILE UNLESS IT IS TEMPORARY AND FREES UP THE
EMPTY SPACE AGAIN; WE ARE GOING TO BE BE LENIENT.)
THE CLASSIC GAME HAS NO REDEAL, BUT THE PROGRAM PERMITS YOU TO SPECIFY
THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF REDEALS ANYWAY; AFTER 2 REDEALS, VICTORY IS
ASSURED.
YOUR SCORE IS THE NUMBER OF CARDS YOU PLACED ON THE FOUNDATION PILES. THE
CHANCE OF WINNING WITH NO REDEAL IS 1 IN 10 GAMES.

3. PYRAMID. TO PLAY PYRAMID, YOU FIRST DEAL OUT 28 CARDS IN THE FORM OF A
TRIANGLE WITH THE APEX AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN, AND WITH ADJACENT CARDS
OVERLAPPING (7 ROWS).
THEN DRAW CARDS ONE BY ONE FROM THE DECK, PUTTING THEM ON A WASTEPILE IF
THEY CANNOT BE USED.
TO PLAY A CARD FROM THE TOP OF THE DECK OR WASTEPILE, IT MUST 'MATCH' A
'FREE CARD' ON THE PYRAMID. A FREE CARD IS ONE WHICH HAS NO OTHER CARDS
OVERLAPPING IT. A MATCH IS WHEN THE RANKS OF THE TWO CARDS ADD UP TO
13 (E.G., ACE+QUEEN, TWO+JACK, ETC.).
WHEN A MATCH IS FOUND, THE PAIR IS DISCARDED ON A DISCARD PILE, SCORING
ONE POINT FOR EACH CARD. (THE DISCARD PILE IS SHOWN AT THE LEFT OF THE
SCREEN, THE WASTEPILE TO ITS RIGHT.)
IF A KING IS UNCOVERED EITHER ON THE DECK OR THE PYRAMID THEN IT IS
IMMEDIATELY DISCARDED, SCORING ONE POINT.
THE CHANCE OF WINNING (GETTING ALL 52 CARDS INTO THE DISCARD PILE WITHOUT
REDEAL) IS 1 IN 50 GAMES.
EMPTYING THE TABLEAU SCORES A BONUS OF 65 POINTS MINUS 15*(DEAL OR PASS
NUMBER) MINUS THE NUMBER OF CARDS LEFT IN THE DECK AND TALON; THE GAME
THEN IS OVER. (NOTE: THE BONUS CAN BE NEGATIVE IF YOU REDEAL TOO MANY
TIMES.)
TO PLAY MANUALLY:
USE THE SPACE BAR TO MOVE THE CURSOR ARROW TO THE DESIRED CARD, THEN HIT
THE <ENTER> KEY TO REGISTER IT. REGISTER 2 CARDS AND, IF THEY MATCH, THEY
WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE PYRAMID.
TO DISCARD THE CURRENT HAND CARD ON THE WASTEPILE, HIT THE "N" OR "P" KEYS.
TO QUIT (GIVE UP), HIT THE "X" KEY (THEN HIT SPACE BAR OR <ENTER> TO
PROCEED).

4. SIR TOMMY (OLD PATIENCE, TRY AGAIN).
TO PLAY SIR TOMMY YOU KEEP DEALING 4 CARDS INTO 4 DIFFERENT WASTEPILES,
ONE PER PILE; YOU CHOOSE WHICH CARD GOES INTO WHICH PILE.
THEN YOU PAUSE AND PLAY WHAT YOU CAN FROM THE WASTEPILES (TOP ONLY) INTO 4
FOUNDATIONS, WHICH BUILD UP FROM THE ACE TO KING, REGARDLESS OF SUITS.
YOUR SCORE IS THE NUMBER OF CARDS PLAYED TO THE FOUNDATIONS. A PERFECT
SCORE IS 52.
THERE IS NO REDEAL. THE CHANCE OF WINNING IS 1 IN 5 GAMES.
TO PLAY FROM KBD:
1. IN THE DEALING PHASE, JUST SPECIFY THE WASTEPILE NUMBER (1..4).
2. IN THE PLAY PHASE, SPECIFY THE FROM AND TO PILES (1..4, 1..4); TO
END THE PLAY PHASE, HIT THE <ENTER> KEY, THE "N" OR THE "P" KEYS,
OR THE SPACE BAR.
3. TO GIVE UP, HIT THE "X" KEY (THEN HIT SPACE BAR OR <ENTER> TO
PROCEED).
TIPS: WHEN PLAYING A CARD TO A WASTEPILE, IT IS ADVISABLE TO PLACE A
CARD ON A HIGHER RATHER THAN A LOWER CARD. ABOVE ALL AVOID BURYING
ALL 4 CARDS OF ONE RANK UNDER HIGHER CARDS. MOST OF THE TIME YOU ARE
SAFE WHEN PLAYING TO A PILE THAT DOES NOT CONTAIN ANOTHER CARD OF THE
SAME RANK.

THIS CONTROLS WHETHER A NEW GAME TYPE WILL BE PROMPTED FOR, OR
WHETHER THE SAME GAME TYPE WILL BE CONTINUED WITHOUT PROMPTING.
F8 ABORT THE GAME AND START A NEW ONE OF TYPE CONTROLLED BY F7.
F9 QUIT THE PROGRAM ON CONFIRMATION (YOU CAN ALSO HIT THE ESC KEY
OR THE "Q" KEY).
F10 SOUND EFFECTS ON/OFF TOGGLE SWITCH.
*NOTE* THE LEGENDS FOR ALL "TOGGLE" SWITCHES DISPLAY THE MODE THAT WILL BE
ENTERED AFTER PRESSING THE KEY, WHICH IS THE OPPOSITE OF THE MODE IN EFFECT
AT THE TIME.
ARROW KEYS:
TO CHANGE THE PITCH OF THE CARD DRAW: USE THE LEFT AND RIGHT ARROW KEYS ON
THE NUMERIC KEY PAD.
TO CHANGE THE SPEED OF THE DEMO MODE: USE THE UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS ON THE
NUMERIC KEY PAD. THE NUMBER OF SECONDS THE PROGRAM WAITS BETWEEN DRAWS IS
SHOWN IN THE LOWER RIGHT HAND CORNER OF THE SCREEN (.1 TO 9.9 SECONDS).
TO SKIP THE STARTUP MUSIC: HIT THE <ENTER> KEY TWICE INSTEAD OF ONCE WHEN
RUNNING THE PROGRAM FROM DOS.
