Procedures for using TechSmith Foray PPP Server
on the same machine with Windows 95
The Foray PPP server will run on the version of
DOS supplied in Windows 95 (DOS 7.0). It will NOT run
inside a DOS "box" under the Windows 95 GUI itself
(windowed or full screen).
To facilitate this dual use of the system, several steps
must be taken in the installation and configuration
of the target machine. The following assumes a
default configuration of Windows 95.
--------------------------------------------------------
To start the Foray PPP Server from within Windows 95:
1. Under Windows 95, UNZIP the Foray server package into
a temporary directory on a local hard disk (not
a network drive). Read the README.1ST text file.
If the distribution contains an MS-DOS shortcut
named "4APPPSRV.PIF" skip to step 12.
2. From Windows Explorer, view your Windows 95 directory.
3. Right-click on the COMMAND.COM file and select Create
Shortcut from the context menu.
4. Drag the new shortcut onto the desktop.
5. Right-click on the shortcut and select "Properties".
6. Select the "Program" tab on the property sheet.
7. Select the "Advanced" button.
8. Select the "MS-DOS Mode" and "Specify a new MS-DOS
Configuration" options.
9. Select the "Configuration..." button and uncheck
the "Mouse" option on the resulting dialog then
click the "OK" button.
10. Add the NOEMS option to the EMM386.EXE line
in the CONFIG.SYS box. Delete everything
in the AUTOEXEC.BAT box.
11. Click "OK" in the Advanced and subsequent
Properties dialog boxes.
12. Double-click on the shortcut and answer Yes
to the warning dialog. You may have to close some
or all Windows applications for the switch to MS-DOS
mode to continue. The system should then reset
and bring you to a DOS prompt.
13. Change to the directory where the Foray Server files
were placed and execute INSTALL.BAT to install
and configure the Foray Server.
14. After installation, reboot the system to test the server
and make any necessary configuration changes.
15. Reboot the system and press ESC when prompted
to return to Windows 95 mode.
16. You should now be able to simply double-click
the new shortcut when you want to run the
Foray PPP Server. You can rename
(i.e., "Foray PPP Server") or move the
shortcut as you wish.
