Part 2 MAILBAG:
--------
I would like to thank you for the many
comments and some criticism (ugh!) on
my articles.
I would like to know if anyone would
like to see more articles (or a
regular column) about News From
Europe. I do have contacts all over
in Europe that I correspond with on a
monthly basis and I subscribe to many
of the European computer magazines. I
will also be in Europe a couple of
times this year. Thus, I can continue
writing about what is going on there.
I find it very rewarding that some of
PC Gazette readers read the whole
issue and not just the parts that are
of interest to them!
We strive to become more dependent
upon our readers for what they would
like to see in a magazine of this
format.
Thus, you have a say for what you want
to see. We have added several new
features such as the mailbag, doors,
articles about games, language, and
hardware reviews. Coming soon, we
will be able to have the latest issue
as a door option on all of the PCG NET
bulletin boards within a couple of
months. All of this takes time,
money, and effort. I know, here comes
the sales pitch...we need your support
in making this the best magazine ever.
Thus, help us help you by supporting
us with your donations and
suggestions. Please send your
donations to Robert at the address
located on the last page of this
section.
Due to the nature of my work, I had to
abandon the Quicksilver's Review with
last month's issue. Instead, I will
be expanding this column with reviews
and more information on Beta Testing.
ASHTON-TATE's Responds to my
complaints:
--------------------------------------
Yes, Ashton-Tate's management finally
responded to my list of complaints
about their tardiness of dBRUN and of
the many complaints of dBase III
problems and responses.
I finally received a letter telling me
that they were sorry to read in an
issue of PC Gazette about the slowness
of the delivery of their dBRUN package
(which was 8 months overdue!). I
received the copy via UPS Overnight
service without a charge!
Anyway, they continue that their
Customer Service lines have been very
busy and that as of December 1, 1986,
they will no longer have a toll-free
phone number. According to their
letter, that this was due to a cut-
back policy that was put into effect
several months ago. Thus, it looks
like we will end up paying for a phone
call and waiting until one of their
operators answers.
I will review the dBRUN version in a
future column.
Thing's results of PC Gazette's
Reader's Poll:
--------------------------------------
Alright Thing, it's your turn. All of
us would like to see the finally tally
of the Reader's Poll.
With -- polls returned, the following
are our tabulations:
1st Annual PC GAZETTE Readers Poll
Awards
--------------------------------------
A)Best Public Domain Software Package:
Unfortunately, no clear choice emerged
in the poll.
B) Best Commercial Software Package:
Unfortunately, no clear choice emerged
in the poll.
C) Best Game Package (either P.D. or
Commercial):
The winner was Accolade's Mean 18 Golf
Game. Some of the response picking
this game stated that it was the best
in graphics and in the details of
Golfing.
D) Best Hardware:
1) Computer: Compaq 286
2) Add-On card: AST's Rampage Card
3) Printer: Any Epson graphics
printer
E) Best Book (about a specific
subject):
The winner was Peter Norton's "Inside
the IBM PC (version 2)" and his other
book "Programmer's Guide to the IBM
PC".
Comments or Questions about any
articles in PC GAZETTE are most
welcomed:
In this category, there were many
comment and questions about PC
Gazette. Some of the questions
included if we would be available on
diskette format. Our response was yes
and last month we started to issue PC
Gazette on diskette for a fee of $60
per year with the latest version of
GraphText and several issues of the
Gallery (our graphics magazine).
Many comments were in the form of how
we (the reader) can help. Several
readers wanted to write a column for
the Gazette. Now, you might wonder
how this works. You should write the
article and send a copy to Robert
Flores. He is our Big Cheese and
chief person to blame if the issue is
late. He will review the article with
several people to see if it is worth
putting it into a future issue of the
Gazette. Sometimes, we need to have
some articles to use as filler in an
issue. Especially, if one of the
regular writers fails (heaven forbid!)
to get his or her article in on time.
Many of the comments were favorible
with us deleting the graphics goodies
from the Gazette. However, We do miss
Syntax's kissing face! But, Syntax is
now covering for us in our graphics
magazine called the GALLERY.
Other comments were about our GREAT
articles and some even suggested that
they can do a better editing job.
Well, if that person can do better in
editing our articles without "axing"
it to bits then stand up and volunteer
your services to Robert!
On which Bulletin Board did you get
this issue from:
Most of the responses for this
question was from our establised PCG
NET. This was encouraging as that we
have tried to make it available to all
parts of the country. Many of the PCG
NET have an area dedicated to the PC
GAZETTE. Many thanks to those Sysops
to whom have dedicated their support
in carrying PC Gazette.
The Final Word:
---------------
Thank you, Thing for a great job in
compiling the results of our Reader's
Poll. Also, thanks for the great
response and your loyalty.
Next month, I will be reviewing some
of the new books on the market. The
software that I will be reviewing
includes Referee, Enable 2.0, and
several other goodies.
Until next time, keep those letters
and comments coming!!
