  33.      Ritodrine should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed
  34. container.

  36. USES

  38.      Ritodrine is used to prevent premature labor.  It belongs to a group of
  39. drugs called beta-adrenergic nerve receptor stimulants.  It prevents premature
  40. labor by relaxing uterine muscle, thus decreasing the strength and frequency
  41. of uterine contractions.
  42.  
  43. TREATMENT
  44.  
  45.      Ritodrine treatment is usually begun intravenously.  Once the
  46. contractions stop, the medication is generally continued orally (in tablet
  47. form).
  48.      Ritodrine tablets can be taken either on an empty stomach or with food or
  49. milk (as directed by your doctor).
  50.      BE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR DOCTOR'S INSTRUCTIONS on how this medication
  51. should be taken.
  52.      It is important to try not to miss any doses of this medication.  If you
  53. do miss a dose and remember within an hour, take the missed dose immediately.
  54. If more than an hour has passed, do not take the missed dose at all; just
  55. return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do not double the next dose of the
  56. medication.

  58. SIDE EFFECTS
  59.  
  60.      Minor.
  61.  
  62.      Nausea or jitteriness.  These side effects should disappear as your body
  63. adjusts to the medication.
  64.  
  65.      Major.
  66.  
  67.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  68. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  69. palpitations, shortness of breath, skin rash, tremors, or vomiting.

  71. INTERACTIONS
  72.  
  73.      This medication interacts with a number of other types of medications:
  74.      1. Beta blockers (acebutolol, atenolol, betaxolol, carteolol, esmolol,
  75. labetalol, metoprolol, nadolol, penbutolol, pindolol, propranolol, timolol)
  76. decrease the effectiveness of ritodrine.
  77.      2. Concurrent use of ritodrine and adrenocorticosteroids (cortisone-like
  78. medicines) can lead to additional side effects in the mother or newborn.
  79.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  80. taking, especially any of those listed above.

  82. WARNINGS
  83.  
  84.      * Be sure to tell your doctor about any unusual or allergic reactions
  85. that you have had to any medications, especially to ritodrine.
  86.      * Before starting to take ritodrine, be sure to tell your doctor if you
  87. now have or if you have ever had diabetes mellitus, eclampsia or
  88. pre-eclampsia, heart disease, high blood pressure, pulmonary hypertension, or
  89. thyroid disease.
  90.      * Do not take any over-the-counter (nonprescription) cough, cold,
  91. allergy, asthma, sinus, or diet medication, unless you first check with your
  92. doctor or pharmacist.  Some of these products decrease the effectiveness of
  93. ritodrine.
  94.      * You should CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY for further instructions
  95. if your contractions begin again or if your water bag breaks while you are
  96. taking this medication.
