  34.      Rifampin should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed,
  35. light-resistant container.
  36.  
  37. USES
  38.  
  39.      Rifampin is an antibiotic that is used to treat tuberculosis and to
  40. prevent meningococcal meningitis.  Rifampin works by preventing the growth and
  41. multiplication of susceptible bacteria.  Rifampin, however, is not effective
  42. against viruses, parasites, or fungi.
  43.  
  44. TREATMENT
  45.  
  46.      Rifampin should be taken with a full glass of water on an empty stomach
  47. one hour before or two hours after a meal.  If this medication causes stomach
  48. irritation, however, check with your doctor to see if you can take it with
  49. food.
  50.      Try not to miss any doses of this medication.  If you do miss a dose,
  51. take the missed dose as soon as possible, unless it is almost time for your
  52. next dose.  In that case, do not take the missed dose at all; just return to
  53. your regular dosing schedule.  Do not double the next dose.
  54.      Continue to take this medication for the entire time prescribed by your
  55. doctor (which may be months to years), even if the symptoms disappear before
  56. the end of that period.  If you stop taking the drug too soon, resistant
  57. bacteria will continue to grow, and your infection could recur.
  58.  
  59. SIDE EFFECTS
  60.  
  61.      Minor.
  62.  
  63.      Diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, gas, headache, heartburn, loss of
  64. appetite, nausea, stomach irritation, or vomiting.  These side effects should
  65. disappear as your body adjusts to the medication.
  66.      If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down for a while; get up slowly from a
  67. sitting or reclining position.
  68.  
  69.      Major.
  70.  
  71.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  72. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  73. confusion, difficult or painful urination, fatigue, fever, flushing, itching,
  74. muscle weakness, numbness, skin rash, uncoordinated movements, visual
  75. disturbances, or yellowing of the eyes or skin.  Also, if your symptoms of
  76. infection seem to be worsening rather than improving, tell your doctor.

  78. INTERACTIONS
  79.  
  80.      Rifampin interacts with several other types of medications:
  81.      1. Concurrent use with paminosalicylic acid may decrease the blood levels
  82. and effectiveness of rifampin.
  83.      2. Rifampin can decrease the blood levels and effectiveness of
  84. metoprolol, propranolol, verapamil, aminophylline, theophylline,
  85. oxtriphylline, quinidine, adrenocorticosteroids (cortisone-like medicines),
  86. progestins, clofibrate, methadone, oral anticoagulants (blood thinners, such
  87. as warfarin), oral antidiabetic medicines, barbiturates, benzodiazepine
  88. tranquilizers, dapsone, digitoxin, and trimethoprim.
  89.      3. Concurrent use of rifampin with alcohol or isoniazid can lead to an
  90. increased risk of liver damage.
  91.      4. Rifampin may decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives (birth
  92. control pills), and pregnancy could result.  You should use a different or
  93. additional form of birth control while taking rifampin.  Discuss this with
  94. your doctor.
  95.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  96. taking.
  97.  
  98. WARNINGS
  99.  
  100.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  101. any medications, especially to rifampin.
  102.      * Before starting to take this medication, be sure to tell your doctor if
  103. you have a history of alcoholism or liver disease.
  104.      * Rifampin has been prescribed for your current infection only.  Another
  105. infection later on, or one that someone else has, may require a different
  106. medicine.  You should not give your medicine to other people or use it for
  107. other infections, unless your doctor specifically directs you to do so.
  108.      * If this drug makes you dizzy or drowsy, do not take part in any
  109. activity that requires alertness, such as driving a car or operating
  110. potentially dangerous machinery.
  111.      * Rifampin can cause reddish-orange to reddish-brown discoloration of
  112. your urine, feces, saliva, sputum, sweat, and tears.  This is a harmless
  113. effect.  The drug may also permanently discolor soft contact lenses.  You
  114. might want to stop wearing them while you are taking this medication.  Discuss
  115. this with your ophthalmologist.
  116.      * Do not stop taking this medication unless you first check with your
  117. doctor.  Stopping the drug and restarting it at a later time can lead to an
  118. increase in side effects.
  119.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although rifampin
  120. appears to be safe in humans, birth defects have been reported in the
  121. offspring of animals that received large doses of the drug during pregnancy.
  122. Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  Small amounts of
  123. rifampin pass into breast milk.
