  38.      Ranitidine should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed,
  39. light-resistant container.
  40.  
  41. USES
  42.  
  43.      Ranitidine is used to treat duodenal and gastric ulcers.  It is also used
  44. in the long-term treatment of excessive stomach acid secretion, in the
  45. prevention of recurrent ulcers, and in the treatment of reflex esophagitis
  46. (inflammation of the esophagus).  Ranitidine works by blocking the effects of
  47. histamine on the stomach, thereby reducing stomach acid secretion.

  49. TREATMENT
  50.  
  51.      You can take ranitidine either on an empty stomach or with food or milk.
  52.      Antacids can block the absorption of ranitidine.  If you are taking
  53. antacids as well as ranitidine, at least one hour should separate doses of the
  54. two medications.
  55.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  56. possible, unless it is almost time for the next dose.  In that case, do not
  57. take the missed dose at all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do
  58. not double the next dose.

  60. SIDE EFFECTS
  61.  
  62.      Minor.
  63.  
  64.      Constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, nausea, or stomach upset.
  65. These side effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication.
  66.      To relieve constipation, exercise and drink more water (unless your
  67. doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  68.      If you feel dizzy while taking this medication, sit or lie down for a
  69. while.
  70.  
  71.      Major.
  72.  
  73.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  74. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  75. confusion, decreased sexual ability, unusual bleeding or bruising, or
  76. weakness.

  78. INTERACTIONS
  79.  
  80.      Ranitidine can interact with other types of medications:
  81.      1. Ranitidine may increase the blood-sugar-lowering effects of glipizide.
  82.      2. Ranitidine can decrease the elimination of warfarin from the body,
  83. which can increase the risk of bleeding complications.
  84.      3. Ranitidine can increase blood levels of procainamide.
  85.      4. Ranitidine may cause a false positive result with the Multistix urine
  86. protein test.
  87.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  88. taking, especially any listed above.

  90. WARNINGS
  91.  
  92.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  93. any medications, especially to ranitidine.
  94.      * Tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had kidney or
  95. liver disease.
  96.      * Ranitidine should be taken continuously for as long as your doctor
  97. prescribes.  Stopping therapy early may be a cause of ineffective therapy.
  98.      * Cigarette smoking may block the beneficial effects of ranitidine.
  99.      * If this drug makes you dizzy, do not take part in any activity that
  100. requires alertness.
  101.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Ranitidine appears to
  102. be safe during pregnancy; however, extensive testing has not been conducted.
  103. Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  Small amounts of
  104. ranitidine pass into breast mlk.
