  46.      Quinidine tablets and capsules should be stored at room temperature in
  47. tightly closed, light-resistant containers.
  48.  
  49. USES
  50.  
  51.      Quinidine is used to treat heart arrhythmias.  It corrects irregular
  52. heartbeats and helps to achieve a more normal rhythm.
  53.  
  54. TREATMENT
  55.  
  56.      To increase absorption of the drug, take quinidine on an empty stomach
  57. with a full glass of water one hour before or two hours after a meal.  To
  58. lessen stomach upset, ask your doctor if you can take it with food or milk.
  59.      Take it at the same time(s) each day.  Quinidine works best when the
  60. amount in your bloodstream is kept constant.  This medication should,
  61. therefore, be taken at evenly spaced intervals day and night.  For example, if
  62. you take quinidine four times per day, the doses should be six hours apart.
  63.      The sustained-release tablets should be swallowed whole.
  64.      If you miss a dose of this medication and remember within two hours, take
  65. the missed dose immediately and then return to your regular dosing schedule.
  66. If more than two hours have passed (four hours for the sustained-release
  67. tablets), do not take the missed dose at all; just return to your regular
  68. dosing schedule.  Do not double the next dose.

  70. SIDE EFFECTS
  71.  
  72.      Minor.
  73.  
  74.      Abdominal pain, bitter taste in mouth, confusion, cramping, diarrhea,
  75. flushing, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, restlessness, or vomiting.
  76. These side effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication.
  77.  
  78.      Major.
  79.  
  80.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  81. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  82. blurred vision, difficulty in breathing, dizziness, fainting, fever, headache,
  83. light-headedness, palpitations, rash, ringing in the ears, sore throat, or
  84. unusual bleeding or bruising.

  86. INTERACTIONS
  87.  
  88.      Quinidine interacts with several foods and medications:
  89.      1. It can increase the effects of warfarin, which can lead to bleeding
  90. complications.
  91.      2. Acetazolamide, cimetidine, thiazide diuretics (water pills), sodium
  92. bicarbonate, antacids, and citrus fruit juices can increase the blood levels
  93. and thus the possibility of side effects of quinidine.
  94.      3. Nifedipine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, and rifampin can decrease blood
  95. levels of quinidine.
  96.      4. The combination of quinidine and phenothiazine tranquilizers,
  97. reserpine, nifedipine, amiodarone, or other antiarrhythmic agents can lead to
  98. cardiac side effects that can be very harmful.
  99.      5. Quinidine can increase blood levels of digoxin, leading to serious
  100. side effects.
  101.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  102. taking, especially any listed above.

  104. WARNINGS
  105.  
  106.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  107. any drugs, especially to quinidine or quinine.
  108.      * Before starting to take this medication, be sure to tell your doctor if
  109. you have ever had heart block, hypokalemia (low blood levels of potassium),
  110. kidney disease, liver disease, lung disease, myasthenia gravis, psoriasis, or
  111. thyroid disease.
  112.      * Although many quinidine products are on the market, they are not all
  113. bioequivalent; that is, they may not all be absorbed into the bloodstream at
  114. the same rate or have the same overall pharmacologic activity.  Do not change
  115. brands of this drug without consulting your doctor or pharmacist.
  116.      * Do not take any over-the-counter (nonprescription) products for asthma,
  117. allergy, sinus, cough, cold, or weight reduction unless you first check with
  118. your doctor or pharmacist.
  119.      * If this drug makes you dizzy or light-headed, do not take part in any
  120. activity that requires alertness, such as driving a car or operating
  121. potentially dangerous machinery.
  122.      * Before having surgery or other medical or dental treatment, tell your
  123. doctor or dentist you are currently taking this medication.
  124.      * Do not stop taking this drug without first consulting your doctor.
  125. Stopping quinidine abruptly may cause a serious change in the activity of your
  126. heart.  Your doctor may, therefore, want to reduce your dosage gradually.
  127.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although this drug
  128. appears to be safe, extensive studies in pregnant women have not been
  129. conducted.  Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  Small
  130. amounts of quinidine pass into breast milk.
