  44.      Pancrelipase tablets, capsules, and powder should be stored at room
  45. temperature in tightly closed containers.

  47. USES
  48.  
  49.      This medication is a combination of digestive (pancreatic) enzymes
  50. obtained from pigs.  These enzymes aid in the digestion and absorption of
  51. starch and fats.  Pancrelipase is used to treat pancreatic enzyme deficiencies
  52. resulting from conditions such as pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, or
  53. gastrointestinal bypass surgery.
  54.  
  55. TREATMENT
  56.  
  57.      In order to obtain the maximum benefit, you should take pancrelipase just
  58. before or with meals or snacks.  The powder can be added to food; the tablets
  59. can also be crushed and mixed with food.
  60.      If you are taking the capsules containing the enteric-coated
  61. microspheres, swallow the capsule whole.  Chewing, crushing, or breaking the
  62. capsules decreases their effectiveness and increases the side effects.
  63. However, if you have difficulty swallowing the capsules, you can open them and
  64. sprinkle the contents on a small amount of liquid or soft food, which you
  65. should then swallow without chewing.  DO NOT mix this medication with alkaline
  66. foods (such as dairy products) they can reduce its effectiveness.
  67.      If you miss a dose of this medication, do not take the missed dose at
  68. all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do not double the next
  69. dose.

  71. SIDE EFFECTS
  72.  
  73.      Minor.
  74.  
  75.      Diarrhea, nausea, or stomach cramps.  These side effects should disappear
  76. as your body adjusts to the medication.
  77.  
  78.      Major.
  79.  
  80.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  81. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  82. bloody urine, hives, joint pain, skin rash, or swelling of the feet.

  84. INTERACTIONS
  85.  
  86.      Pancrelipase can decrease the absorption of iron from the
  87. gastrointestinal tract, which may lead to nutritional deficiency.  Your doctor
  88. may want to prescribe iron supplements if this becomes a problem.  Cimetidine
  89. or antacids are often prescribed concurrently with pancrelipase, in order to
  90. maximize its effectiveness.  However, calcium- or magnesium-containing
  91. antacids should be avoided--they decrease this medication's effectiveness.
  92. You should discuss these effects with your doctor.

  94. WARNINGS
  95.  
  96.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  97. any medications, especially to pancrelipase, pancreatin, or any other
  98. digestive enzymes.
  99.      * Patients who have allergies to pork products may also be allergic to
  100. pancrelipase, since it is obtained from pigs.
  101.      * The powder form and the powder from opened capsules of this medication
  102. can be very irritating to the nose and throat.  Avoid inhaling the particles.
  103.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although pancrelipase
  104. appears to be safe during pregnancy, extensive studies have not been
  105. conducted.  Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  It is
  106. not known whether pancrelipase passes into breast milk.
