  40.      Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container.

  42. USES
  43.  
  44.      This medication is a combination of specific digestive (pancreatic)
  45. enzymes obtained from pigs or cows.  These enzymes aid in the digestion and
  46. absorption of fats and starch.  Pancreatin is used in the treatment of various
  47. pancreatic enzyme deficiencies resulting from conditions such as pancreatitis,
  48. cystic fibrosis, or gastrointestinal bypass surgery.

  50. TREATMENT
  51.  
  52.      In order to obtain the maximum benefit from this medication, you should
  53. take pancreatin just before or with meals or snacks.  The tablets can be
  54. crushed and mixed with food.
  55.      If you miss a dose of this medication, do not take the missed dose at
  56. all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do not double the next
  57. dose.

  59. SIDE EFFECTS
  60.  
  61.      Minor.
  62.  
  63.      Diarrhea, nausea, or stomach cramps.  These side effects should disappear
  64. as your body adjusts to the medication.
  65.  
  66.      Major.
  67.  
  68.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  69. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  70. bloody urine, hives, joint pain, skin rash, or swelling of the feet or legs.

  72. INTERACTIONS
  73.  
  74.      Pancreatin can decrease the absorption of iron from the gastrointestinal
  75. tract, which may lead to nutritional deficiency.  Your doctor may want to
  76. prescribe iron supplements if this becomes a problem.  Cimetidine or antacids
  77. are often prescribed concurrently with pancreatin in order to maximize its
  78. effectiveness.  However, calcium- or magnesium-containing antacids should be
  79. avoided--they decrease this medication's effectiveness.  You should discuss
  80. these effects with your doctor.

  82. WARNINGS
  83.  
  84.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  85. any medications, especially to pancreatin, pancrelipase, or any other
  86. digestive enzymes.
  87.      * Patients who have allergies to pork or beef products may also be
  88. allergic to pancreatin, since it is obtained from pigs and cows.
  89.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although pancreatin
  90. appears to be safe during pregnancy, extensive studies have not been
  91. conducted.  Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  It is
  92. not known whether pancreatin passes into breast milk.
