  39.      Diltiazem should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed
  40. container.
  41.  
  42. USES
  43.  
  44.      This medication is used to prevent the symptoms of angina (chest pain).
  45. It belongs to a group of drugs known as calcium channel blockers.  It is
  46. unclear exactly how it does so, but diltiazem dilates the blood vessels of the
  47. heart and increases the amount of oxygen that reaches the heart muscle.  This
  48. drug is also prescribed to lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
  49.  
  50. TREATMENT
  51.  
  52.      If stomach irritation occurs, diltiazem can be taken either on an empty
  53. stomach or with meals, as directed by your doctor.  The sustained-release
  54. capsules should be swallowed whole; chewing, crushing, or crumbling them
  55. destroys their controlled-release activity and possibly increases the side
  56. effects.
  57.      In order to become accustomed to taking this medication, try to take it
  58. at the same times each day.
  59.      However, Diltiazem does not relieve chest pain once the pain has begun;
  60. this medication should be used to prevent angina attacks.
  61.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  62. possible, unless it is within four hours of the next scheduled dose.  In that
  63. case, do not take the missed dose at all; just return to your regular dosing
  64. schedule.  Do not double the next dose.
  65.      This medication does not cure angina, but it will help to control the
  66. condition as long as you continue to take it.
  67.  
  68. SIDE EFFECTS
  69.  
  70.      Minor.
  71.  
  72.      Constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, insomnia,
  73. light-headedness, nausea, nervousness, stomach upset, or vomiting.  These side
  74. effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication.
  75.      This drug can increase your sensitivity to sunlight.  Therefore, avoid
  76. prolonged exposure to sunlight and sunlamps.  Wear protective clothing and
  77. sunglasses, and use an effective sunscreen.
  78.      If you feel dizzy or light-headed, sit or lie down for a while; get up
  79. slowly from a sitting or reclining position, and be careful on stairs.  To
  80. avoid dizziness when you stand, relax and contract the muscles of your legs
  81. for a few moments before rising.  Do this by pushing one foot against the
  82. floor while raising the other foot slightly, alternating feet so that you are
  83. "pumping" your legs in a pedaling motion.
  84.      To relieve constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  85. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and
  86. drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).

  90.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  91. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  92. confusion, depression, fainting, fatigue, flushing, fluid retention,
  93. hallucinations, palpitations, skin rash, tingling in the fingers or toes,
  94. unusual weakness, or yellowing of the eyes or skin.

  96. INTERACTIONS
  97.  
  98.      Diltiazem can interact with several other medications:
  99.      1. Diltiazem should be used cautiously with beta blockers (acebutolol,
  100. atenolol, betaxolol, carteolol, esmolol, labetalol, metoprolol, nadolol,
  101. penbutolol, propranolol, pindolol, and timolol), digitoxin, digoxin, or
  102. disopyramide.  Side effects on the heart may be increased by the concurrent
  103. use of these medications.
  104.      2. Cimetidine can decrease the elimination of diltiazem from the body,
  105. which can increase the risk of side effects.
  106.      3. Diltiazem can increase the blood concentrations of carbamazepine and
  107. cyclosporine, which can increase the risk of side effects.
  108.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  109. taking, especially any listed above.

  111. WARNINGS
  112.  
  113.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  114. any medications, especially to diltiazem.
  115.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had
  116. bradycardia (slow heartbeat), heart block, heart failure, kidney disease,
  117. liver disease, low blood pressure, or sick sinus syndrome.
  118.      * If this drug makes you dizzy or drowsy, avoid taking part in any
  119. activity that requires alertness, such as driving a car or operating
  120. potentially dangerous equipment.
  121.      * To prevent fainting while taking this drug, avoid drinking large
  122. amounts of alcohol.  Also, avoid prolonged standing and strenuous exercise in
  123. hot weather.
  124.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Extensive studies in
  125. pregnant women have not been conducted, but birth defects have been reported
  126. in the offspring of animals that received large doses of diltiazem during
  127. pregnancy.  It is also known that diltiazem passes into breast milk.  If you
  128. are breast-feeding an infant while being treated with this medication, tell
  129. your doctor.  Unless directed to do otherwise, breast-feeding is not
  130. recommended at this time.
