  37.      Dihydrotachysterol tablets, capsules, oral solution, and oral concentrate
  38. should be stored at room temperature in tightly closed, light-resistant
  39. containers.  This medication should never be frozen.

  41. USES
  42.  
  43.      Vitamin D is essential to many body systems (including muscle and heart
  44. function).  Dihydrotachysterol is a vitamin D analog--it raises blood calcium
  45. levels.  This medication is used to treat tetany and hypoparathyroidism,
  46. conditions characterized by low blood calcium levels.
  47.  
  48. TREATMENT
  49.  
  50.      You can take dihydrotachysterol either on an empty stomach or with food
  51. or milk (as directed by your doctor).
  52.      Each dose of the oral solution form of this medication should be measured
  53. carefully with the dropper provided.  The solution can then be swallowed
  54. directly or mixed with fruit juice, cereal, or other foods.
  55.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  56. possible, unless it is almost time for the next dose.  In that case, do not
  57. take the missed dose; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do not
  58. double the dose.

  60. SIDE EFFECTS
  61.  
  62.      Minor.

  64.      None, at the dosages normally prescribed.

  66.      Major.
  67.  
  68.      The side effects associated with dihydrotachysterol therapy are usually
  69. the result of too much medication (vitamin D intoxication).  Tell your doctor
  70. about any side effects that are persistent or particularly bothersome.  IT IS
  71. ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about blurred vision, bone pain,
  72. constipation, dry mouth, headache, increased thirst, increased urination,
  73. irritability, loss of appetite, mental disorders, metallic taste in the mouth,
  74. muscle pain, nausea, palpitations, runny nose, vomiting, weakness, or weight
  75. loss.

  77. INTERACTIONS
  78.  
  79.      This drug interacts with several other drugs.
  80.      1. If you are being treated for hypoparathyroidism, concurrent use of
  81. dihydrotachysterol and thiazide diuretics (water pills) can lead to
  82. hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels).
  83.      2. The effects of this medication may be increased or decreased by
  84. digoxin, antacids, verapamil, or cholestyramine.
  85.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  86. taking, especially any listed above.

  88. WARNINGS
  89.  
  90.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  91. any medications, especially to dihydrotachysterol, calcitriol, calcifediol,
  92. ergocalciferol, or vitamin D.
  93.      * Before starting to take this medication, it is very important that you
  94. tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had heart or blood vessel
  95. disease, hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, vitamin D intoxication, or
  96. sarcoidosis.
  97.      * Before taking any over-the-counter (nonprescription) products that
  98. contain calcium, phosphates, magnesium, or vitamin D, check with your doctor.
  99. These ingredients can increase the side effects of dihydrotachysterol.
  100.      * Dihydrotachysterol is more expensive than vitamin D products, but it is
  101. often prescribed instead of vitamin D because it is faster-acting and does not
  102. persist in the body once therapy is stopped.
  103.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although
  104. dihydrotachysterol has not been studied during pregnancy in humans, birth
  105. defects have been reported in the offspring of animals that received large
  106. doses of this medication during pregnancy.  Also, tell your doctor if you are
  107. breast-feeding an infant.  It is not known if this drug passes into breast
  108. milk.
