  39.      This medication should be stored at room temperature in tightly closed,
  40. light-resistant containers.
  41.  
  42. USES
  43.  
  44.      Chlordiazepoxide is prescribed to treat the symptoms of anxiety and
  45. alcohol withdrawal.  It is not clear exactly how this medicine works, but it
  46. may relieve anxiety by acting as a depressant of the central nervous system.
  47. This drug is used to relieve nervousness.  It is effective for this purpose,
  48. but it is important to remove the cause of the anxiety as well.

  50. TREATMENT
  51.  
  52.      This medication should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor.  It
  53. can be taken with food or a full glass of water if stomach upset occurs.  Do
  54. not take this medication with a dose of antacids, since they may retard its
  55. absorption.
  56.      If you are taking this medication regularly and you miss a dose, take the
  57. missed dose immediately.  If more than an hour has passed, however, skip the
  58. dose you missed and wait for the next scheduled dose.  Do not double the dose.
  59.  
  60. SIDE EFFECTS
  61.  
  62.      Minor.
  63.  
  64.      Bitter taste in the mouth, constipation, depression, diarrhea, dizziness,
  65. drowsiness (after a night's sleep), dry mouth, excessive salivation, fatigue,
  66. flushing, headache, heartburn, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness,
  67. sweating, or vomiting.  As your body adjusts to the medicine, these side
  68. effects should disappear.
  69.      To relieve constipation, increase the fiber in your diet (fresh fruits
  70. and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and drink
  71. more water (unless your doctor instructs you to do otherwise).
  72.      Dry mouth can be relieved by chewing sugarless gum or by sucking on ice
  73. chips.
  74.      If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down for a while; get up slowly from a
  75. sitting or reclining position, and be careful on stairs.
  76.  
  77.      Major.
  78.  
  79.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  80. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  81. blurred or double vision, chest pain, difficulty in urinating, fainting,
  82. falling, fever, hallucinations, joint pain, mouth sores, nightmares,
  83. palpitations, rash, severe depression, shortness of breath, slurred speech,
  84. sore throat, uncoordinated movements, unusual excitement, unusual tiredness,
  85. or yellowing of the eyes or skin.

  87. INTERACTIONS
  88.  
  89.      Chlordiazepoxide interacts with several other drugs:
  90.      1. To prevent oversedation, this drug should not be taken with alcohol,
  91. other sedative drugs, central nervous system depressants (such as
  92. antihistamines, barbiturates, muscle relaxants, pain medicines, narcotics,
  93. medicines for seizures, and phenothiazine tranquilizers), or with
  94. antidepressants.
  95.      2. This medication may decrease the effectiveness of carbamazepine,
  96. levodopa, and oral anticoagulants (blood thinners) and may increase the
  97. effects of phenytoin.
  98.      3. Disulfiram, oral contraceptives (birth control pills), isoniazid, and
  99. cimetidine can increase the blood levels of chlordiazepoxide, which can lead
  100. to toxic effects.
  101.      4. Concurrent use of rifampin may decrease the effectiveness of
  102. chlordiazepoxide.
  103.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  104. taking, especially any of the medications that are listed above.
  105.  
  106. WARNINGS
  107.  
  108.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  109. any medications, especially to chlordiazepoxide or other benzodiazepine
  110. tranquilizers (such as alprazolam, clorazepate, diazepam, flurazepam,
  111. halazepam, lorazepam, oxazepam, prazepam, temazepam, and triazolam).
  112.      * Tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had liver disease,
  113. kidney disease, epilepsy, lung disease, myasthenia gravis, porphyria, sleep
  114. apnea, mental depression, or mental illness.
  115.      * This medicine can cause drowsiness.  Avoid tasks that require
  116. alertness, such as driving a car or operating potentially dangerous machinery.
  117.      * Before having surgery or any other medical or dental treatment, tell
  118. your doctor or dentist that you are taking this drug.
  119.      * This medication has the potential for abuse and must be used with
  120. caution.  Tolerance may develop quickly; do not increase the dosage of the
  121. drug without first consulting your doctor.  It is also important not to stop
  122. this drug suddenly if you have been taking it in large amounts or if you have
  123. used it for several weeks.  Your doctor may want to reduce your dosage of this
  124. medication gradually.
  125.      * This is a safe drug when used properly.  When it is combined with other
  126. sedative drugs or alcohol, however, serious side effects may develop.
  127.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  This medicine may
  128. increase the chance of birth defects if it is taken during the first three
  129. months of pregnancy.  In addition, too much use of this medicine during the
  130. last six months of pregnancy may lead to addiction of the fetus, resulting in
  131. withdrawal side effects in the newborn.  Also, use of this medicine during the
  132. last weeks of pregnancy may cause excessive drowsiness, slowed heartbeat, and
  133. breathing difficulties in the infant.  Tell your doctor if you are
  134. breast-feeding an infant.  This medicine can pass into breast milk and cause
  135. excessive drowsiness, slowed heartbeat, and breathing difficulties in the
  136. nursing infant.
