- Can You Catch Sexual Diseases From Toilet Seats?
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: My girl friend is a real fanatic about bathrooms. I have known her
- to hold herself in for hours to avoid using a public rest room, even in the
- finest restaurants. She claims that they are a breeding ground for all sorts
- of sexual infections, and refuses to use them. Now she has me wondering. Is
- this true, and what precautions can be taken to prevent such infections?
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ANSWER: I remember the first time I was told by a patient that his sexual
- infection was acquired from a toilet seat, and that he was just an innocent
- victim. It wasn't true then, and it isn't true today. The bacteria and
- viruses that are responsible for sexually transmitted diseases (STD) need
- hospitable environments in which to grow. That includes moisture, warmth, a
- good supply of nutrients amongst other ingredients, certainly not the
- surroundings to be found on a toilet seat. Most toilets seats today are made
- of plastic, and do not provide an arena in which bacteria can grow. In fact
- the bacteria soon die on the dry, plastic surface.
- In addition, most bacteria or viruses that are strong or virulent enough
- to provoke an infection in the body require large numbers of organisms to
- establish a foot hold. The body's own defenses are usually enough to control
- just the few cells that might survive a period of time on the toilet seat.
- Using paper seat covers that are sometimes provided or scrubbing down the
- seat with hot soapy water may help, and certainly give the user a bit more
- piece of mind, but the truth is that the STDs syphilis, gonorrhea, and others
- require direct sexual contact for transmission, and that the old "toilet seat
- story" is but a feeble alibi for other actions. Personal cleanliness is a
- fine attribute, but neither you nor your girlfriend (nor anyone else) have
- much to fear from a toilet seat.
