- Cancer Drug from Tree Bark
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: What can you tell me about the new miracle drug for cancer? I know
- it is made from tree bark, and that many fear that there won't be enough trees
- to meet with the demand for the drug. Can you tell me about this as well? I
- appreciate all the information you provide and read your column every day.

-
- ANSWER: The new drug you refer to is called "Taxol" and is used specifically
- for ovarian cancers that have not responded to standard therapy. It is made
- from the bark of the Pacific yew, Taxus brevifola, and the bark is obtained
- with the cooperation of the U. S. Forest Service. According to one source the
- European yew was used in India in the form of clarified butter preparation for
- treating cancer around the turn of the century, and experiments in the United
- States in 1962 revealed that the extract from the bark was effective against
- certain kinds of cancer in mice. It is manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb,
- and was recently approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration. It has
- been shown to shrink tumors by at least 1/2 in 20-30 percent of patients.
- There are side effects with this medication, much the same as any other cancer
- therapy, that includes nausea, bone marrow suppression, and allergic
- reactions. A new method of extracting the precious chemical from the needles
- of the European yew tree without killing the tree for its bark provides an
- alternate supply without destroying our American yew trees.
