- QUESTION: I am very cautious about exposing my skin to the sun, and I
- carefully watch every little blemish on my face and chest for any changes. My
- trouble is I can't tell if anything is changing on my back. It's hard to see
- clearly with just a small pocket mirror and my mirror on my medicine cabinet.
- What can I do to reassure myself that nothing is going on?

- ANSWER: Self examination of the skin is an important step in self care, and
- your concern about changing skin lesions is a legitimate one. It isn't hard
- to perform a complete inspection of your entire body, but it does take a bit
- of preparation. You will need a full length mirror, a good sized hand mirror,
- a chair, and a stool to prop up your legs. The room must be well lit. First
- look at all the parts of the body you can see directly. Then observe all
- parts of your body that are visible when looking directly into the full length
- mirror. Then turn your back to the full length mirror and use the hand mirror
- to observe over your shoulder. Sit on a chair, prop your legs up on a stool
- and use the hand mirror to see the underside of your legs and feet. Don't
- omit a careful inspection of your genitals and rectum. Develop a routine and
- check list to be sure you see everything, and then repeat it each month.
