  21. QUESTION:  Could you please explain what S.S.S. (sick sinus syndrome) is, as I
  22. have finally been diagnosed after fainting in the hospital.  The doctors have
  23. told me that this is my problem.  I am now 77 years old, and am doing better
  24. on medication, but have always tired easily.

  28. ANSWER:  Your present condition, Sick Sinus Syndrome (or Sinus Node
  29. Dysfunction Syndrome), is most likely completely unrelated to your previous
  30. fatigued periods, for it is a condition that is more common in older patients.
  31. It is most frequently seen in patients who have coronary artery disease,
  32. although there are several other conditions that can cause the problem.  And
  33. the problem is that the sinus node, the principle pacemaker of the heart that
  34. controls the rhythm and speed of the heart beat, is not functioning as it
  35. should, probably because it is not getting sufficient blood flow from the
  36. heart arteries which may be affected by arteriosclerosis (hardening of the
  37. arteries).  When it fails to send out the electrical messages that make the
  38. heart muscles contract, a heart beat is either skipped or the time between
  39. heart beats is prolonged.  This reduces the amount of blood that is pumped
  40. through the heart, and reduces the amount of oxygen carried to the brain.
  41. When this occurs a patient feels weak, dizzy, or may faint and pass out
  42. completely as in your case.  In other cases a sick sinus can begin to send out
  43. impulses too frequently, and the heart rate is increased, a condition known as
  44. "tachycardia".  While medications can be used to help increase the blood flow,
  45. an external pacemaker is used to control the heart beat when the sinus node no
  46. longer may be depended upon to keep the beat strong and regular.
  47.      The diagnosis is usually made with the help of a Holter monitor, a small,
  48. portable device that keeps a record of the heart action for a 24 hour period.
  49. When the record is reviewed, the physician can find the irregular heart beats
  50. that cause the physical symptoms, and evaluate the extent of the problem.
  51. This helps in choosing the right medication or help to make the decision to
  52. use a pacemaker instead.
