- Asbestos in the Home

- QUESTION: There was a lot of fuss at my children's school recently when they
- discovered some pipes were still covered with asbestos. I think the same
- thing is here in our house and I don't want to put the kids in any danger.
- How do I know what is wrapped around my pipes at home, and how do I get rid of
- it if it is asbestos? I am a pretty handy guy, and think I can manage it
- myself, if I had a book of some kind. Do you know if such a manual is
- available and where? Appreciate all your help.

- ANSWER: It would have to be a home built some time ago to have asbestos in
- it, as this material is not used in the construction of homes today. I am no
- expert in identifying the substance, but I can offer you some important words
- of advice. Number one, you may not have to remove the asbestos if it is in
- your home, and number two, under no circumstances should you consider doing
- this as a home improvement project. Asbestos removal is now performed by
- specially trained and licensed contractors, who have the special know how to
- deal with this substance. And removal may be expensive. However, experts
- advise not to disturb the material if it is in good shape. In some cases
- enclosing it in a compartment or sealing it with a material that binds the
- fibers together and coats them may be sufficient. The danger of asbestos is
- that is can crumble, becoming a fine powder than can be sucked into the lungs
- during breathing. There it causes an inflammation and scarring, even cancer,
- as the lungs cannot get rid of this irritating material. The amount of risk
- depends upon the amount of exposure to the particles, the size and quantity of
- the particles in the air, and the kind of asbestos. Asbestos is not really a
- single mineral but rather a group of minerals which have some common
- properties. While not a manual for asbestos removal, the American Council on
- Science and Health publishes a booklet, "Asbestos" which discusses many
- aspects about these fibers and is most informative. For your copy you can
- write to Asbestos, American Council on Science and Health, 1995 Broadway, 2nd
- Floor, New York 10023-5860. The cost is $3.85 including handling and postage,
- which should be included with your request.
