- QUESTION: My private physician discontinued performing annual health
- evaluations on all his patients several years ago, and so I don't see him
- quite as frequently as in the past. However, I still would like to keep check
- on my status and so would like to know what to request, as far as tests go,
- when I do have to go to his office. Is there anything special I should get
- looked at while I have the chance? Your advice would be very much
- appreciated.

- ANSWER: Yearly, or routine annual physicals gave way to consideration of cost
- several years ago when research discovered that these yearly examinations did
- not provide the health benefits to warrant the expense. That doesn't mean
- that some tests and examinations are not still considered important enough
- for inclusion when you do have occasion to visit your physician. Probably the
- most overlooked part of the examination, and the one that can have the
- greatest health benefits, is a complete and detailed history of your present
- status, your social and family life, the particulars and environmental
- conditions of your employment, as well as a full detailing of the conditions
- of your father and mother, as well as other members of your family. Much of
- the benefit you can derive from your medical visit lies in the counseling you
- may receive about your life style, important factors such as smoking,
- drinking, sexual habits, nutrition and exercise, that have long lasting and
- important effects on the state of your health, and your longevity. Much of
- the value lies in the ability of modern medicine to predict the future results
- of some life style activity, and so by changing it now, prevent the advent of
- disease. Stop smoking, and your chances of both heart and lung disease are
- reduced.
- While some tests may depend upon your past medical history, your sex and
- your age, here is a list of some of the items you might consider discussing
- with your physician when next you visit. In addition to routine blood
- pressure, physical examination and rectal, think about checking your
- cholesterol, presence of blood in the stool, sigmoidoscopy (examination of the
- last section of bowel and rectum), clinical breast examination or mammography,
- and Pap smear. It would also be a fine time to have all your immunizations
- brought up to date, tetanus-diphtheria booster, flu and pneumonia
- immunizations if indicated. All these actions can help preserve your present
- health, and make your visit worthwhile.
