A Resource About Research on Stroke
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since stroke is the leading cause of adult disability in the United
States, and the third leading cause of death by disease, it is little wonder
that so many letters request information about stroke. Though the risk of
stroke is greater for men, women live longer than men, and so they are the
greatest victims after age 65. But much has been learned about the treatment
of stroke and the conditions that may lead to this tragic disease. And
research continues, with 12 new medicines under development at this time. One
approach is to prevent, dissolve, or slow the growth of blood clots in the
brain, another is to reduce the tissue damage, or restore brain after a stroke
has occurred. A fine booklet that discusses this research, lists the
companies and products, and provides facts about strokes and risk factors, has
just been made available by the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association
(PMA). It is called "Research on Stroke" and can be obtained without charge
by writing to "Pharmaceutical Frontiers: Research on Stroke," PMA, 1100
Fifteenth Street, N.W. Washington, DC 20005. Anyone interested in health
issues, will find a wealth of information about life threatening and
debilitating disease.
