A Resource About Chickenpox and Shingles
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you read this column regularly, you know that the cause of both
shingles and chickenpox are infections cause by the same virus. It's called
the varicella (chickenpox)-zoster (shingles) virus or VZV. Chickenpox is the
disease that occurs when the virus first infects an individual, usually during
the childhood years, and will affect more than 3 million people each year.
Later in life, the virus can strike again, only then it presents as a disease
called "herpes zoster", and which many of you know as "shingles". And that
can be a painful disease for many. About 15 percent of the population, mostly
over the age of 50, will experience this distressing disease. A new booklet
"The Fight Against VZV Infections: Shingles and Related Disease" describes
much that is known about these conditions. You can get your free copy by
sending your request, along with a stamped self addressed business size
envelope to: Brochure B, The VZV Research Foundation, Inc., 40 East 72nd
Street, New York, NY 100212. It offers, in question and answer format, the
responses to many of the questions you have addressed to me over the years.
