A Resource About Advice for Parents on Dealing with a Drug Using Child
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Second only to the tragic waste that occurs when children get hooked on
drugs is the anxiety and pain suffered by the parents who must deal with the
problem. Without the knowledge gained through personal experience, parents
are often frightened, frustrated and ineffective in a situation that requires
the ultimate in interaction with the child. So the child goes improperly
counseled, or worse yet, undirected and jumps from one drug abuse to another.
The path often starts with the use of cocaine, and its highly addictive
properties make casual users into ever more frequent users. And that leads to
the need for funds to pay for the habit, which can lead to crime and trouble
with the law.
The first positive step to avert these tragedies is to provide parents
with the basic information they need to stop the problem at its earliest
stages. And the American Academy of Pediatrics has done just that with their
new brochure "Cocaine: Your Child and Drugs". It is must reading for all
parents, and it can be obtained with out cost by sending a stamped
self-addressed business sized envelope to: American Academy of Pediatrics,
Division of Publications, 141 Northwest Point Blvd., P.O. Box 927, Elk Grove
Village, IL 60009-0927. Concerned grandparents or relatives of teenagers are
also invited to request the publication.
