A Resource About Hip Fracture Prevention
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
More than 280,000 persons, most 65 years or older, suffer a broken hip
each year and the numbers could reach epidemic proportions as our country's
population ages. Based on current population projections, there could be as
many as 350,000 hip fractures each year in the year 2000, and 650,000 by 2050,
if the world is still here.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has launched a national
educational program that focuses attention on the risk factors that lead to a
hip fracture in the elderly and provides information that outlines strategies
for preventing the injury that costs the U.S. economy a whopping $9.8 billion
a year.
As part of the new initiative the Academy has prepared a brochure called
"Live it Safe: Prevent Broken Hips", that contains information on hip
fractures and prevention strategies. You can obtain your copy without cost by
sending a stamped self-addressed business size envelope to: Live It Safe,
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, P.O. Box 1998, Des Plaines, IL
60017, or by calling their public service number 1-800-824-BONES.
