  18. QUESTION:  I have arthritis and although the medicines that have been
  19. prescribed for me help a bit, they can't seem to get the whole job done.  What
  20. about some of the other things I have seen advertised like body wraps and
  21. vibrators?  Do you think they offer any hope of a cure?

  25. ANSWER:  Body wraps, lotions, ointments and vibrators may provide fleeting
  26. relief, but in general they offer no long term help to the arthritis
  27. sufferer.
  28.      Vibrators for arthritics come in various sizes, shapes and prices.  They
  29. may be sold as hand units, electric belts, pillows or furniture and can range
  30. in price from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars.  Advertisers claim the
  31. machines vibrate the arthritic joint massaging away the surrounding excess
  32. fluid.
  33.      The body wraps and ointments are supposed to be applied to the skin and
  34. then wrapped for maximum heat absorption.  They seem to offer only temporary,
  35. minor relief.  Some doctors have found the massages can actually be harmful to
  36. a arthritic joint.
  37.      I know how desperate some arthritic sufferers get, seeking some relief,
  38. any relief from the constant pain and aches.  But for my money, and yours,
  39. this is not the way to go.  Before buying one of these questionable arthritis
  40. remedies, have a talk with your own physician.  Your doctor is in the best
  41. position to advise you about the possible benefits you might get, as well as
  42. the probable loss your pocketbook will take.
