Do Body Wraps and Vibrators Offer Any Hope of an Arthritis Cure? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ QUESTION: I have arthritis and although the medicines that have been prescribed for me help a bit, they can't seem to get the whole job done. What about some of the other things I have seen advertised like body wraps and vibrators? Do you think they offer any hope of a cure? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ANSWER: Body wraps, lotions, ointments and vibrators may provide fleeting relief, but in general they offer no long term help to the arthritis sufferer. Vibrators for arthritics come in various sizes, shapes and prices. They may be sold as hand units, electric belts, pillows or furniture and can range in price from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. Advertisers claim the machines vibrate the arthritic joint massaging away the surrounding excess fluid. The body wraps and ointments are supposed to be applied to the skin and then wrapped for maximum heat absorption. They seem to offer only temporary, minor relief. Some doctors have found the massages can actually be harmful to a arthritic joint. I know how desperate some arthritic sufferers get, seeking some relief, any relief from the constant pain and aches. But for my money, and yours, this is not the way to go. Before buying one of these questionable arthritis remedies, have a talk with your own physician. Your doctor is in the best position to advise you about the possible benefits you might get, as well as the probable loss your pocketbook will take. ---------------- The material contained here is "FOR INFORMATION ONLY" and should not replace the counsel and advice of your personal physician.
