What Causes Painful Ejaculation?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUESTION: Would you please answer a question for me that I find a bit too
embarrassing to discuss with my own physician? I am a male, 28 years old. I
experience a sharp pain at my climax during sex. What should I do?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANSWER: You can start by finding a doctor who you can confide in, for only
his evaluation is going to provide you with the personal answers you seek.
There are many reasons for painful ejaculation. You'll be comforted, however,
to know you are not alone--this is not an uncommon problem.
Though it is difficult to guess at the cause in your case, here are a few
possibilities. Sometimes the pain is caused by an obstruction, bacteria, or
inflammation. Other times, it is simply caused by certain medications which
have been found to cause painful ejaculation. An accurate diagnosis and
treatment is dependent on a thorough history, examination and lab evaluation.
Your doctor will need to know at what point the pain actually occurs--before,
during, or after intercourse.
It is also crucial to be able to tell the physician exactly where the
pain occurs--the glans, penile shaft, scrotum or perineum. Once your doctor
determines the cause of your problem, effective treatment can begin. And that
will rid you of both the physical and emotional pain that is bothering you
now.
